Third Period Comeback Propels Women*s Hockey

Middleton, Wis. - Wisconsin women*s hockey used a four-goal third period to overcome a two-goal deficit as the Badgers defeated Boston College, 5-3, at Capitol Ice Arena on Sunday. Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) led the way with a goal and three assists, while Steph Millar (Hudson, Wis.) scored twice including the game-winner.
After a scoreless first period, Kelly McManus put the Eagles on top, scoring off the rebound of a Jen Buckley goal at 5:22. BC increased its lead to two with Missy Barsz* unassisted goal at 5:49 of the second. Barsz intercepted a Badger clearing attempt at the blue line and went in unabated on goaltender Jen Neary (Dallas, Texas).
Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) put the Badgers on the board, cutting the deficit in half at 10:19. Weiland came charging down the slot late and took a pass from Hunter at full speed before beating Eagle goalie Sharon VanTuyl.
The Eagles responded 36 seconds later to regain their two-goal lead. Buckley scored from McManus and Kryzak at 10:55, closing out the second period scoring.
With the help of four power plays, Wisconsin scored four third period goals for the second straight game. Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) entered the game to start the period and faced just one shot, but Hunter scored her 28th goal of the season to bring Wisconsin within one. Hunter took a pass at 4:03 from Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) before beating a BC defender one-on-one and finding the back of the net.
Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) evened the score with the second power-play goal of the period at 5:50 on a centering pass from Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.). Natascha Sherman (Seattle, Wash.) also recorded an assist on the play.
Millar put the Badgers ahead for the first time in the game at 15:53 with an even-strength goal. Hunter centered to Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) whose deflection carried past the net, off the back boards and to Millar on the opposite side of the goal. The frosh pulled the puck in front and stuffed it past the BC goaltender for the game-winner.
*BC is a feisty team,* said head coach Trina Bourget. *They did a great job forechecking. I think they outworked us and out-hustled us in the first two periods. We were fortunate today to really pick it up and turn it on in the third period and battle back. I am very proud of the team for coming back and facing adversity and chipping away at the score, shift-by-shift.*
Millar would add an insurance power-play tally less than a minute later at 16:50. Millar pounced on a Hunter shot that banged off the post. Kathryn Greaves (Mentor, Ohio) sent the puck to Hunter for the second assist.
Neary made 12 saves and allowed all three BC goals before MacMillan replaced the sophomore in the third period. MacMillan made just one save, but earned the win to improve to 11-3-2. Van Tuyl drops to 0-5-0 with her 35-save effort.
*Its the end of the semester and we are 13-3-2,* added Bourget. *You can*t ask for too much more than that. We*ll rest up and come back ready to battle come second semester when we face Providence College.*
The seventh-ranked Badgers (13-3-2, 8-2-2 WCHA) are off until Jan. 7 when the play Providence College in Lake Placid, N.Y., as part of a tournament with Boston College and Team USA. The Badger next play home against Ohio State at Capitol Ice Arena on Jan. 20 and 21 at 1:05 p.m.

After giving up a goal in the first minute, the Atlanta Thrashers scored 5
unanswered goals (4 in the 3rd) to repeat as champions of the Shop til You
Drop tournament, defeating host Charlotte 5-2.

The MUCH-improved Ice Cats defeated Atlanta the night before (5-3) but was
unable to keep their momentum going as crafty Atlanta coach Paul Addison
fiddled with his lines before the final period Sunday afternoon and the
Thrashers responded with 3 goals in a 2 minute span.

Forward L "Can I Possibly Fall on My Ass One More Time?" T had this to say
following the win: "I attribute our success to our pre-final ritual last
night. I can't tell you exactly what we do, but I will say this: it involves
nail polish."

Kudos to the Charlotte Ice Cats for a fun, fabulous tournament, for improving
so rapidly and dramatically and for getting the majority of the games out of
the horrible and frankly scary Ice Chalet.

In other hockey news, Charlotte's Rec team were victorious in the Rec
division.

DARTMOUTH SWEEPS MINNESOTA WITH 4-0 VICTORY

HANOVER, N.H. - For the second night in a row, Dartmouth got goals from each
of its top three lines and the top-ranked Big Green handed second-ranked
Minnesota a 4-0 defeat for a sweep of the team's two-game series.

For the Gophers, the two losses marked the second time they have ever been
swept in a weekend series and third time they have lost back-to-back games.

Dartmouth got an early goal, two minutes 12 seconds into the opening period,
from Sarah Clark and a late first-period goal, with 29.2 second on the
clock, from Jennifer Wiehn.

The Big Grenn tacked on two more in the second period. The first, coming at
the 6:20 mark when Lydia Wheatley, while being tied up in front of the net,
managed to redirect a Carly Haggard pass over the should of Gopher netminder
Erica Killewald. Kim McCullough scored on the power play with 5:10 left in
the period when she carried the puck out of the right faceoff circle, around
a Minnesota defender and shot the puck through Killewald's pads.

From that point, Dartmouth goalie Meaghan Cahill did the rest, recording a
30-save shutout as her team outshot its guest 35-30.
