USA up 2-0 after two. Dunn and Bye for the Americans, who are full value for
the lead. Canada has a grand total of about 7 shots over two periods. No
offence for Canada, questionable defensive zone coverage.

Third just starting.

Canada 2, USA 2 at the end of regulation time. Virtually a single-handed
performance by Hefford (who got both Canadian goals) made up for the far
superior USA team play. Stand by for OT.

Canada 3, USA 2!!!!!!!

Good pressure by Canada pays off via Drolet's shot off DeCosta's shoulder in
overtime. USA played Canada out of the rink for the first two periods, much
more even in the third and overtime.

As usual, things couldn't be closer between the two countries. 30-0 in World
Championship play since 1990. Yes, I know, we can't take the '98 Olympics
away from you :)

Thanks to TSN, and to Phil for announcing it, for cybercasting tonights game.
After some scrambling to download the proper player, I finally got in to see
the game from period two on. We here in the US can only hope ESPN gets their
act together for next year in Minnesota.

Thanks again, Phil, for the post!

Well, I thought for sure the US were going to take it this year. What is
with the play of the Canadians in the defensive zone? The 5-on-4s were
played well, but there seemed to be a lot of panicky stuff going on!
However, what a great game - the defensive zone play just made me nervous!

I was really impressed with the US team, and the game certainly could have
gone the other way. The announcers on TSN (Paul Romanuk and Margot Page) I
thought did a great neutral job. They did mention several times through the
OT intermission about the US team practicing and playing together for a long
period of time vs. the Canadians being thrown together for a few training
camps. When is Canada Hockey going to pick up on the fact that this
strategy is not going to work for much longer? I think the Olympics in
particular showed the importance of a longer team-building time span.

When Drolet scored that goal, I went nuts! I had to surrender my 5th row
tickets to this game, and I definitely wish that had not been the case!

For those who watched the game on TSN, did Cammi not look EXTREMELY pissed
when she went to get the plate from Mike Harris?

I can't wait until 2001 to see the games in Minnesota - that will definitely
be a party atmosphere.

Here in Victoria, the local FM station runs a regular contest in which a
sports figure who has shown dedication, hard work, character, etc. is
honoured as a "Hometown Hero".

Well, the most recent recipient is Teri Cotton, coach of the Victoria
Stingers, and well-deserved it is, too!

I attended the final on Sunday. Canada played awful for the first two periods but really came on in the third and then completely dominated the overtime. Overall it was a fantastic game to watch especially in person. Very exciting and from the Canadian side of things, very frustrating. Canada just could not get anything going for the first 40 minutes. But they were certainly there when it counted.
They should think about having the final game in a bigger venue. They could have easily sold more tickets for the final. Maybe next time.
Way to go you bums and princess', you made us all proud, not to mention much easier to make a posting to the list today. I'll sign off now, I wouldn't want Kelly to read anything into this.

Speaking of Kelly:

You (Kelly) went to great lengths explaining how you could not
understand why Team Canada was made up of veteran players. Well there
was one thing you forgot to mention; that Team USA trains together for
at least the last year. So either these women have jobs in their home
towns and fly everyday to the training site or MAYBE USA hockey provides
them with house and lodging and don't have to work. And that 14 of the
players were on the Olympic gold medal team. So now who should we feel
sorry for?

The love of the game outweighs the money of the game!

Down and out Team Canada wins gold in OT

Alan Adams
National Post

CANADA 3 UNITED STATES 2

MISSISSAUGA - There is nothing like the sound of a winners' dressing room,
especially when a team that's down and looks out like Canada did last night
rallied to win a sixth straight women's world hockey championship.

The air was filled with well-deserved ear-piercing screams after the
Canadians, losing 2-0 after two periods and being badly outplayed, beat
their bitter rivals, the United States, 3-2 in overtime on Nancy Drolet's
goal at 6:50.

Drolet came out of the corner and walked into a slap shot that goalie Sara
DeCosta got a piece of, but the puck went end-over-end and landed across the
goal line to send the 4,890 at the Hershey Centre into chants of "Canada,
Canada, Canada."

Jayna Hefford scored twice in the third period for the Canadians, who ran
their winning streak to 30 consecutive victories at the women's world
championships, dating back to 1990.

Until the Canadian rally, it was looking like the American strategy to crank
up their defensive game was going to pay huge dividends.

It seemed that anytime anyone in the familiar red Canadian jersey had the
puck, someone with the Stars and Stripes stitched to their uniform was on
them.

But in the second intermission, the Canadians found what was missing in the
game and they took it to the Americans.

Hefford electrified the crowd when she went end to end with the puck and
snapped a 10-foot wrist shot past DeCosta at 6:54 to slice the deficit in
half. Hefford then showed she has a nose for the net when she slipped a
rebound into the American net, tying it at two.

The Americans didn't have much in the way of scoring chances after that, and
the Canadians kept coming on.

There wasn't much action in the first period and through the first minutes
of play, there was only one shot counted by both teams.

The Americans zeroed in on Hayley Wickenheiser, the talented forward who was
hampered by a sore right shoulder. Usually Wickenheiser is a force on the
ice, but between the American checkers and her bum shoulder, she was a
non-factor.

The Americans owned the second period when they scored both goals and shut
down the Canadian offence, limiting their opponents to a measly three shots
while they peppered Sami Jo Small with 15 at the other end.

The American goals came from turnovers by a pair of veteran members of the
Canadian team.

Geraldine Heany was trying to make her way out of her end when the puck
slipped off her stick and was picked up by Krissy Wendell, who made a
beeline to the Canadian goal. Small made the first save, but there was
nothing she could do when Tricia Dunn snapped the rebound low to the glove
hand at 3:55.

Vicky Sunohara helped the Yankees pull ahead 2-0 about eight minutes later.
Sunohara, usually dependable, she chipped a pass right to Sue Merz and her
shot was tipped by Karen Bye high over a sprawling Small.

In the bronze medal game, Finland beat Sweden 6-1.

I just wanted to say thanks to Karen Arbour and Bruce (sorry, I don't
remember your last name) for once again organizing such a wonderfully FUN
tournament! They do their best to ensure that the tournament is not only
fair but fun...

I've attended the Toronto Icebreakers Tournament for the last two years and
it's been a blast both times!

Subject: Question on penalties

I noticed last night that Team USA's Angela Ruggiero was given a 10 minute
penalty for checking from behind. Is this an automatic penalty for that
infraction at the international level or is it at the refs discretion? I
think she got 2 and a 10 for the hit. Is there a minor involved as well as
the 10?

What's everyone's opinion on possibly having a series of games in the medal
rounds for tourny's like the WWHC? Say for instance a best of three series
for the gold medal. Any thoughts?

I don't know international rules, but USA hockey a check from behind is
automatically 2 and 10.
