Wow, Cheryl had some well thought out observations. I'm glad you shared them
Heidi.
I've thought about my fears and tried to get to the root of them. Mainly my
fears about competing on the Nat'l level. Basically, they are unfounded
fears and stem from fear of failure and making a fool of myself. But I keep
going back to "So what if that happens? I'll survive and live another day."
When I think of the worst that could happen realistically, it still isn't
something that would kill me, so I find the courage and do it.
My daughter is 13 and plays on a boys hockey team. And played on a boys
baseball team. She never thought about it as being a girl on a boys team,
only as a player on a team. The problem comes in with the parents' thinking.
We were brought up differently thinking along the lines of what Cheryl
outlined. Lots of parents ask her what's it like being the only girl? She
just sees herself as one of the guys, a member of the team. And if she ever
gets any crap from a guy she handles it like a boy and throws his gear in the
trash or something else like that and that's the end of it.
The reason she wants to play on boys' teams is because the competition is
more intense and challenging to her skill level. Not all girls like that.
Maybe very few.
Just some thoughts brought to mind by Cheryls' observations.

Here's some good news for those who can't fly to Canada (or Northern
Minnesota, same thing). The TSN website indicates that they'll be showing
the final "on-line". Who knows what the quality will be like, but it's
better than nowt (as they say in Yorkshire). Here's their announcement:

Women's World Hockey Championship
Canada vs. U.S. - Live Cybercast
Canada defeated Finland 3-2 in semifinal action as seen on TSN and tsn.ca.
Meanwhile, the U.S. beat Sweden, 7-1, in the other semifinal. TSN and tsn.ca
will carry the finals live. Click here on Sunday, April 9 at 7:30pm ET to
watch it! The Cybercast is brought to you in cooperation with Canadian
Hockey and IIHF.com

Scoreless after one...shots 7-4 for USA, some big hits, most noticeably on
Wickenheiser, who has a sore shoulder.
