My women's team is playing in the Brampton ice hockey tournament April 20-23, and our goalie just found out that she needs knee surgery. Unfortunately, we do not have a back-up. We are playing in the rec division. If you or anyone you know may be willing to play for us, please email me! Thanks.

While I don't have a copy of the IIHF tie-breaker
rules, I imagine that Team USA is "running up the
scores" in case of a tie with Finland. Sadly, many
tournaments tend to use "goals for" (or the slightly
better option of "goals differential") as the first
tie-breaker (after head-to-head). If that is so for
the World's then the US has secured the tie-breaker in
case of a tie with Finland.

Well, I've had all the moments; walking on the ice with the skate guards on
(our first home game of the year, lots of fans, music), falling over the
boards...

I would have to say the best foolish hockey story I have is from when I
played a game in net for my team. I've played in net before, but it's
always a challenge - especially because I catch right when I'm in net. I
only know one other goalie who does, and she wasn't available for me to use
her blocker and glove. So, I had to use my friend's equipment, which was a
little big and of course, the wrong way!

Anyway, to get to the heart of it... I made a few saves in close and my
defence finally managed to get a rush down the other end. Meanwhile, in my
unco-ordinated state, I got the butt end of the goal stick stuck in the mesh
of the net, and the blade of the stick stuck under my left goal pad! I
couldn't get up! I literally was floundering around on the ice yelling
"Help me! Help me!" Luckily enough for me, the owner of the equipment was
one of the refs and she had been watching me (in tears of course) so she
came back and untangled me. The two of us were laughing so hard, it was
difficult to get me untangled!

It is probably the funniest thing that has ever happened to me, and I'm
getting the giggles just typing it up!

The gap hasn't changed all that much since 1990 because as much as the bottom teams have made strides to improve, so have the top teams. Canada and the US team are much improved since 10 years ago at the first worlds. China, Japan, Sweden and Finland have all made improvements to their game but have a long way to go to catch up with the US and Canada. I think the only solution is time. These teams need more time to get their programs up to the same level as Canada and US. Money is also a big factor in the development of these countries hockey programs. And ofcourse they could all benefit from North American hockey experience in the form of instructors to teach the basic skills. I don't know how that would work but I guess it would require money to lure coaches from the US and Canada to come and teach the game to their young players. Due to things like the Olympics I think the interest is there in these countries but I don't think they have all the pieces in place to improve from the ground level.

Hi from the Women's Worlds,

I'm actually at the Worlds right now volunteering as the Team Liaison with
the Russian National Team. It is great fun! We have not had great success
yet but will get to play teams of closer caliber the rest of the way.

Luckily 3 of the Russian players and the Equipment Manager speak English.
Oleg, the Equipment manager has been to 9 Olympic Games with the Men's
Russian National Team so has lots of experience. Two of the Russian
Players actually live and play in Boston.

I was lucky enough to also work with the Russian Team at the '97 Worlds in
Kitchener and they have many of the same players competing here.

This team is trying to qualify for a spot at the Salt Lake Olympic Games.
The top 6 teams gain an Olympic berth.

The Host Committee for the 2001 Women's World Championships to be held in
Minneapolis, MN are in town having a look at how this event is being run!
They will do a site visit and ask all sorts of questions about the
operation of a World Championship.

I'm off to take the Russian Team shopping on their rest day and its a big
game tomorrow against the German Team.

Hey guys! I was at my sister's soccer game Monday and I was sitting on the
bench helping their goalie, who I coach. I looked over to the stands and
there was a really cute little boy. I commented to one of the girls about it
and she said, "That's Brownie's nephew. He was in the olympics. His mom plays
hockey. She's Lisa Brown- Miller. She was pregnant with him when she was in
the olympics." Sure enough, I look up and there's Lisa!! I thought that it
was really cool! I didn't get a chance to talk to her because she left before
the end of the game, but when I go to her hockey camp this summer I'll be
sure to mention it!!

Great! It's good to hear from somebody "on the inside". I won't get to
Mississauga until Saturday myself, because first I'm going to Troy to watch
round-robin games in the US Nationals.

I did the same job with Team Japan in 1990 that you're doing now with the
Russian team. Between my 6 months of Japanese, and their school English,
assisted by lots of phrasebooks and goodwill, we didn't do too badly
communicating either. I see from the rosters that there are 2 Japanese
players here this year who were on the 1990 team (the Sato sisters).

Being involved is way more fun than just watching .... at any level of hockey!

Hey, don't you know that it's baseball season down here in the States!!
That's much more important than a world championship hockey tournament! Hell,
I definately want to see Seattle playing in their third game of the season!
It's such an important game!!! :-(

I've already submitted a letter on ESPN's website telling them to start
making plans now to televise at least the final from next years tourny in
Minnesota. This gives them a whole year to work on it and put it in their
programming schedule. Maybe if we all join forces here and start sending them
letters, they may wake up. Go to their site and put in a request!!!!!!

Looking at the stats for Team USA, Looney and Merz
have no points in the three games played. They appear
on the roster at USA Hockey but they are missing from
the team roster at the IIHF site. Anyone know, why
they are missing and why have they not been replaced?
Just wondering and still amazed.

Subject: RE: US players vs. Canadian players

Hi List,

Getting a good job for an experienced hockey player in Canada is not that
hard if the player has marketable skills and brings the values and work
ethic of the game to the job site.

Getting my foot in the door where I work now had lots to do with hockey...
the manager and supervisors play hockey on my team and when I let it be
known I was leaving my last job, they asked me in for an interview. We
talked hockey for an hour and work for a few moments. Everyone in my work
team plays or has kids who play or they themselves once played quality
hockey when they were young and in their prime.

Hockey is "a Canadian thing" and we respect fellow players on and off the
ice. Team sports develops soft people skills and a strong work ethic --
both of which are in high demand these days.

The finals will be covered by TSN (Canadian sports network similar to ESPN).
TSN buys a lot of programming from ESPN, they already have the relationship
that ESPN could pick up any women's game with just a phone call. It's all up
there on satellite, they could EASILY rebroadcast it if they wanted to. ESPN's
problem is although they may use another broadcasters video, they won't use
other broadcaster's commentary, they have to put in their own so they can babble
on incessantly about everything except the actual play by play. Okay, I'm getting
off topic, but the point is IF THEY WANT IT , IT IS THERE.

Tonight TSN is covering the Sweden/Canada game
Saturday the semi's are covered, and Sunday the finals.

Is it just the A1-B2 (let's go out on a limb and say Canada and Finland)
semi that they are covering, or also the A2-B1 (Sweden and US?) semi-final?
