I am a beginner goalie in St. Louis, Missouri looking for a local
women's hockey class. If anyone knows of one starting soon, let me
know. I need some serious ice time. Thanks a bunch.

There is a women's 2nd. year team you can contact at http://stlsurge.8.com/
They have a notice on their homepage that they have practice ice scheduled
and all ages and skills are welcome. My daughter practiced w/ them last year
while she was recuperating from her 2nd. broken collar bone. There is good
coaching. Olivia is too young to travel w/ them. She's only just 13. Hope
this helps!

Last night, something was said in my coed team's locker room that has been
bothering me. I wanted to know if anybody has any opinions on this.
First, let me set up the situation. I play in a non-checking "men's" C
league in North Carolina. There are probably about five or six other
women that normally play in this league as well. We just started a new
season yesterday and my team was still filling some roster spot.
Apparently, one spot was originally filled by a league official with
another woman, but my captain had filled it with another guy. The other
woman was then taken off of our roster. This wasn't the most troubling
part. After our game, one of the other guys on my team said, "We already
have one female. Why do we need another? This is after all a men's
league." Now, this guy is no where near our best player, of course
neither am I. It just bothers me that he would say this without even
knowing how well this woman played. Also, the women in my area have no
choice, but to play with the men if we want to play every week. At this
moment, I don't think I'm going to say anything, but I just wanted to get
another opinion on the situation.

My first reaction is to ask the rink to consider changing the name of the
league if there are 5 or 6 other women in it and since the women have no
other option if they want to play. Then this guy wouldn't be able to say
that.

Other than that, if you don't want to confront the guy and ask him how he
knows this women isn't a good player, just know that if there are other
guys like that in the league, you'll have an advantage when they
underestimate you :) (I remember one time I was playing a wing in a
faceoff and my male opponent kind of snickered to his teammates. The puck
came to us, and I beat him to it ..those are the best kind of revenges :-)

One problem is the name of the league. If five or six women play
in the league, then it is not a men's league, and it shouldn't
be called a men's league. It should be called "Adult Recreational
Hockey" or some such.

I should have noticed this earlier. The ice that we play at actually does
call the league, the "ADULT LEAGUE." My teammate was obviously mistaken
when he made part of his comment.

Our co-ed team (about 50% women) had played in the same adult league
(read "men's" except for our team)for 5-6 years. Looking for extra ice
time we joined another league at a rink in the next town. Having gotten
used to teams bringing their top players to play against us (we won the
league for several years running), this "new" league was quite a treat.

At our first game, the captain of the other team came up to me and
said, "Now, don't you girls worry about this; we're just out here to
have fun - we won't play too hard."

I'm not quite sure how I didn't laugh at him. We had 5-6 varsity
collegiate women's players and 2-3 guys that had played D2 collegiate
hockey. We weren't exactly worried.

(We won the game.)

Erin
