I have really appreciated all this information about skates. I have pretty
old (bought used and I have used them for 3 years) CCM junior tacks, no
number on them like 252, etc. They fit my feet so perfectly that once I
got over that painful feeling in my bones and joints from using my feet so
differently, my feet actually felt happy when I put them on and laced them
up. Now, they are breaking down at the ankles and no longer provide
support. I have tried new ones, I think 652's, and also tried some hand-me
down 852s that were too big, and found both arches to be so high that they
were killing me. So, my question is, do other people find the newer CCMs
to have high arches, perhaps higher than other makes and higher than the
old ones they used to make? Do you think I would have success lifting up
the insole and whittling out some of the arch? Or is this something that
would resolve itself given enough time to break my feet into them or them
into my feet? I literally could not skate more than 15 minutes in the
newer skates, in severe pain the entire time. This is so distressing
because my first pair have fitted so well and served me so well, and I'm
reluctant to buy a new pair without skating on them for a few weeks, which
of course no one lets you do.

And does that walking around off-ice in your skates with wet socks trick
really work to break them in quickly?

Barbara,

CCM has several different size liners with different arch heights. My
daughter just got fitted, and the rep had 3 or 4 different-arch-height
liners. Sounds like you need some lower ones. Your dealer should be able to
get some different ones for you to try. That should be part of the service
that you're paying for.

I've been reading the skate-buying discussion with much interest. I bought
a new pair of skates last year, and was having a terrible time with them. I
had the "old" Bauer Comps from '96 (the last year the colour combo was blue)
and loved them. Unfortunately there was a crack in the sidewall of the
skate and I had to surrender them. Anyway, I bought the Comp 5000s last
year as they were the highest level junior skate on the market (size 2 1/2
no less!). From the moment I stepped onto the ice I hated them - and it
wasn't just because I missed the snappy blue colour. I thought it was just
the breaking in period, but it didn't go away.

Anyway, I spoke to some hockey-playing friends (male) and they suggested
that the rocker on the blade was off. Unfortunately I didn't have my old
skates to take the TUUKs and blades off, so I wasn't sure if that was the
problem. I took the new skates in to my local pro shop and had them do
"body contouring" (or some name) on them. They basically interviewed me,
watched me in skates, and evaluated my "style" (such as it is!). I got the
skates back, and it was a TOTAL turnaround. It cost around $30, but I
figured that anything was worth a try to get a pair of $250 skates to feel
comfortable. They really altered the curve of the blade so that my weight
was more balanced for my skating style.

Just a suggestion, YMMV.

That hockey show on CBC in the 80's was "Lance et Compte",
later translated for English CBC as "He Shoots, He Scores."
I always enjoyed that show too even though it was so soap-
operish because it reminded me of my hometown where a
lot of the hockey players were trying for the big time and the
pressures they were under were unbelievable!

I also have to tell a story about the Megan Follows movie (I
have it on tape!) - I met an exchange student from Sweden
in highschool who had chosen to come to Canada because
of that movie!

Women's Hockey blanks Wayne State, 5-0

Detroit, Mich. - The University of Wisconsin women's hockey
team extended its unbeaten streak to four games with a 5-0 shutout at
Wayne State Saturday. Goaltenders Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach,
Calif.) and Jennifer Neary (Dallas, Texas) combined to make 15 saves
and earn the program's first shutout.

"It was great to have both Chanda and Jen combine for the
shutout," coach Julie Sasner said.

Scoring the game's first goal, Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley,
Minn.) provided all the necessary offense at the 7:48 mark of the
first period. Sikich worked a give-and-go with Sis Paulsen (Eau
Claire, Wis.) before she beat Warrior netminder Stacey Bowden to give
UW a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Sikich scored her third goal of the season
to put the Badgers up 2-0. Paulsen and Roberta Shufeldt (Romulus,
Mich.) were credited with the assists.

Melanie Schmitt (Sheboygan, Wis.) made it 3-0 when she scored
her first career goal at 17:46 of the first. Kendra Antony (Yorkton,
Sask.) and Liz Jankowski (Maple Grove, Minn.) set up the goal.

Jankowski earned her first point with the assist on Schmitt's
goal. Early in the second period, she earned her second. Jankowski
took a feed from Paulsen before finding the back of the net for her
first goal at 1:19. For Paulsen, it was her third assist of the day.

Antony, Wisconsin's leading scorer, closed out the scoring at
14:07 of the second period with her sixth goal of the season. Schmitt
got the assist for her second point of the game.

The 5-0 score is the largest margin of victory for the Badgers
this season as they outshot the Warriors 47-15.

"We did a good job of letting the puck do the work and of not
getting involved in scrambles," Sasner said. "It was nice to see a
couple of different people get their first goal. Today was an
opportunity to get a lot of players playing and give them some reward
for the hard work they've been putting in."

The Badgers (3-2-1) next travel to St. Cloud, Minn., where
they will face WWCHA foe St. Cloud State on Oct. 29 and 30. Friday's
game is at 7 p.m. while Saturday's game is slated for 3 p.m.
