I remember watching the Megan Follows movie on CBC. It was great. She does
play a goalie. I think there was also a hockey show on the french version
of CBC that was like a soap. It followed a hockey star's life on and off
the ice. I only caught it a couple of times.

As a kid I enjoyed readying Gump Worsley's autobiography as the stories from
the old days are great. Scott Young's novels are the only other hockey ones
I can remember.

I have found the washing the gear comments very interesting but have to
admit I have never washed my stuff. But it doesn't stink. I think it has
to do with anal retentive airing out of my gear as soon as I get home
combined with wearing cotton long johns and long sleeve shirt underneath. I
had a used blocker that smelled really bad so I put the dryer sheets in it.
This made it worse! It just added a strong flowery smell to the already
yucky smell. Needless to say, I bought a new blocker.

Now I play in a warmer climate and my body armour is starting to smell after
games so I think I am going to try the Febreeze and see what happens. There
are a couple players on my team that I might just give a bottle to if it
works as changing next to them makes me ill!
:~)

You might also want to consider Graf. I just bought a pair of Graf
705's a few weeks ago. They seem narrower than my Bauer 4000's (I
bought the regular width) and they definitely seem more durable. I
didn't even get 2 years out of my Bauer 4000's. After just one year I
had a big hole in the side of them! I've used Bauer all my life, but
I'm giving Graf a try now. Five players on my NWHL team (the
Mississauga Chiefs) use Graf skates.

Subject: New Skates

Being that I just bought some new skates; (Nike Ignite 2's) I felt that I
could constructively add to this discussion.

In the past, I've always used Bauers. Out of the box, they just felt better
on my foot. People with a wider foot consistently have preferred CCM's, I
think. Most of the high-end 1999-2000 skates are heated and then molded to
the foot which makes for and easier break in period with less blistering.

The first time I used my new skates, it was like not knowing how to walk.
They felt SO different, that I felt like a beginner again. In many ways this
could be a good thing because as you re-learn how to skate on your new skates
you could work on breaking any bad habits you may have.

I didn't use my new skates in a game or in practice right away. Instead I
just skated during my lunch break and practiced stopping, crossing over,
etc... It was very weird switching back and forth between skates though, and
I think I'll just have to stop using the old ones and stick with the new.

After using them for a week now, I'm really starting to get comfortable with
them now.

Well, good luck skate shopping. Ask lots of questions about the different
skate models and fit. Don't buy from some kid at a sports retail chain who
can't answer all of your questions.

Someone else posted that they thought CCMs broke in faster than Bauers.
I've observed the exact opposite. Everyone I know who wears Bauers said
they were comfy within a few skates. But those who I have seen purchase
CCMs in the last year or two have had a lot of trouble. A friend who
bouhgt a new pair over a year ago is still complaining. Another friend
ended up returning them.

In any event, I agree with what another poster said. Walk around the
store in the skates for a while and compare the different brands. Some
people swear by CCMs some by Bauer. There are also Eastons, Nike and
Grafs. >>

Subject: skates

I have a pair of Riedell skates that I bought perhaps in 1992. (Yes, that's
Riedell, typically known for their figure skates.) I am at the end of the
life of my second set of blades. The skates still have shown no signs of
breakdown in support. They were comfortable from the first time I skated in
them. (It may have helped that I wore them around the office for a day or 2
with wet socks on -- the advantages of having been self-employed.) I still
*love* these skates. I bought them because I tried on all the different
skates at the store, and these were the ones that fit *me*. My fear is that
once I do need to replace these skates, I won't be able to find another
pair. Since I bought these, I have not seen a store that carries Reidell
hockey skates. I found their website: http://www.riedellskates.com/ which
allows you to search for distributers near you, but I don't know if they'll
carry more than the figure skates.

Anyway, my point is, (and I belive Andrea made this point as well) there
*are* more brands than Bauer and CCM and it's worth trying them all on to
find the one that's best for you.

I have the CCM Women's 852s and I absolutely love them. I have wide feet and have had foot surgery, so I am very particular about
shoes. They cost me $300 (US) and were worth every penny. I've been wearing them for about 18 months now and wouldn't trade them for
any other model.

They don't particularly relate to women's hockey, but two hockey books I
really enjoyed last winter are:

Our Game: An All-Star Collection of Hockey Fiction, ed. Doug Beardsley

and

The Rink: Stories from Hockey's Home Twn's, ed. Chris Cuthbert

I read them at the local library but like them enough to consider buying my
own copy.
