I must say that I have to agree. In January of 1994, my jaw locked shut
and would not open from TMJ problems (would open <1cm). I had to go
through a number of procedures to get back to normal jaw alignment
including splints, braces, retainers, having 6 teeth pulled, etc. It was a
year with no chewing or biting allowed because of the strain it would have
put on the jaw. And that was before I got to the braces phase, then it was
another 2 years with braces. After all that, when I asked my orthodontist
about a mouth guard for hockey, he did said the boil and bite style were
fine (I also have a ShockDoctor).

One thing that you do need to keep in mind is that while a mouthguard
protects your teeth and jaw, it's main function is preventing concussion.
That purpose was mentioned only in passing in the article (but it was
written about the ADA so it's understandable).

Hello all...

Our women's team from Milwaukee will be traveling to Urbaba/Champagne
and also to St. Louis for some games with the teams involved with the
WCHL. If there is anyone on this list from those teams, if you know
of any hotels that are close to the rinks where we will be playing,
the information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot,
Jenn Nejedlo

I just read the article passed on by Chuq...

I also play women's field lacrosse, where it is mandatory to have a
mouthguard (it's the only equipment we wear!). I suffered a concussion in
that sport last year and decided at that point to wear a mouthguard playing
hockey too. I have a ShockDoctor that hangs from my cage, and it surprises
me the number of comments I get on it. Unfortunately they're mostly along
the lines of "what're you wearing that for?"

Anyway, I recently got a molded mouthguard from the dentist. It was a $179
mouthguard and it cost me $15. Basically, if you can get insurance coverage
for the mouthguard, it was $179, but if you couldn't, the dentist would do
it for $15. I know of three dentists that practise this puzzle
payment/insurance scam.

I suggest to anyone who is interested in having a custom mouthguard, to
inquire about this sort of thing at their dentist office. I have found that
the main difference between the ShockDoctor and the custom is the fit. My
custom is almost suction-like, it's so perfect. I can talk much easier, and
it feels much more comfortable.

JMHO,
Dawn

I agree with all that has been said about mouth guards so far. I wear one
because my parents spent way too much money for braces that I actually
like my teeth. One thing I ould like to add is that just because you have
a mouth guard does not 100% guarantee you will not have a concussion. I
had a shock doctor when I suffered a mild concussion in June. I do
believe that this concussion would have been much worse if it were not for
the mouth guard. I would also recommend get a shock doctor mouth guard
and not some cheap one. Remember this is your health or your child's
health we're talking about.

Just remember if you decide to get a custom mouthguard, USA Hockey requires
all players 19 and Under to have a colored mouthguard. It cannot be clear.

Jill,

As a certified athletic trainer and Terri's teammate, I'd say Terri's right
on the mark. She looked pretty good on Saturday. You couldn't tell that
she had had a knee injury. The key is to strengthen your quads and
hamstrings to help protect your knee.

Hi,
I don't stop out on the ice without a mouthguard. I finally broke down
and had one made by my dentist and it's worth it. I should have done it
years ago. I paid $100, no insurance. Sounds a lot but think about how
many times you wear it....the cost is worth it.

JOHNSON JOINS GOPHER WOMEN'S HOCKEY STAFF

Joel Johnson has been hired as an assistant coach for the University of
Minnesota women's hockey program, head coach Laura Halldorson announced
today. A 1996 graduate of Bethel College in St. Paul, Johnson will begin his
duties with the Gophers immediately.

A four-year letterwinner for the Royals in soccer, hockey and baseball,
Johnson comes to Minnesota from his alma mater, where he served as the head
women's soccer and assistant men's ice hockey coach. In 1998, his first
season as the head soccer coach, Johnson led Bethel to a 9-9-0 record, the
best mark in the program's history. He began at Bethel as an assistant
soccer coach in August, 1997, and took over the head duties last season as
well as taking on his role as assistant hockey coach.

Prior to his stint at Bethel, Johnson worked as an assistant girls hockey
coach for Park/Woodbury during the 1996-97 season and coached both soccer
and baseball at New Life Academy for two years following his graduation from
Bethel.

As an athlete for the Royals, Johnson served as team captain in soccer,
hockey and basketball. He earned all-conference and all-region honors during
his career, as well as team most valuable and most inspiration player
awards. As a soccer player, he still ranks second in career assists (21) and
fifth in points (43).

"We're excited to add Joel to our staff," said head coach Laura Halldorson.
"His personality fits well with our group and his on-ice strengths,
particularly his knowledge of defense, compliments our staff well. His
experience in coaching women at the collegiate level will be a great asset
to our program."

Minnesota opens its 1999-2000 schedule Friday, Oct. 15, by hosting St. Cloud
State at Mariucci Arena at 7:05 p.m.
