Jill -

Six years ago - when I first started skating - I completely tore my right
MCL, clear off the bone. A sports med doc put me in a hinged brace (blue,
Donjoy, with metal up sides but only maybe 10" total length). Six weeks
later I was back on ice but in the brace for skating, and it hurt plenty
those first few weeks. It hurt off and on for quite a while, though I
resumed playing and normal activities. The oddest things hurt; going DOWN
stairs, turning over while sleeping, stuff like this hurt more than hockey,
after a couple months! The doc had me doing p.t. from the beginning,
mostly stationary bike and weight training, to improve quads and hamstrings
to stabilize the knee.

One year later, when finally out of that right knee brace .. I tore the
other MCL, on the left knee. Not quite as bad a knee tear but recovery was
complicated by a very bad ankle sprain at the same time. Back to the doc,
back to the physical therapy, and an air cast on ankle in addition to
brace. Repeat all of the above one more time ...

That was five years ago, and I've had no trouble and no pain since, and am
playing 2 to 3 times a week. I honestly believe my knees are in better
shape now than they were any time in the last 25 years, due to the
increased strength in my legs. I personally wonder if those initial
injurys were due to inadequate leg musculature for the sport.

I have no pain or stiffness whatsoever, and I am 42 years old ... and
lived with pain and stiffness in these same knees chronically in my 20s and
early 30s, from old skiing injuries. Yes it can and will get better.
Keep up the physical therapy ! By all means find a doctor that will help
- - I was really pleased to find a sports medicine guy who just grinned and
kept patching me up, and encouraging me back on ice. He was recommending
on ice training for the ankle sprain after only 2 weeks; hardly the advice
I expected to get. I know people who have quit hockey when doctors pulled
the "now dear whats a middle aged lady like you doing playing this sport?"
nonsense...

(grade
II sprain) about 5 weeks ago. I know what my orthopedist told me, and I

check
(from other hockey players.)

How long has it taken you to get back on the ice and able to skate all-out?

How long before skating without that cumbersome knee brace? Does it fully
recover, or will the knee always feel pain & stiffness in the morning?

Jill
I've done both. ACL takes about a year of full physical therapy. However,
my MCL took me for a loop. I didn't get on the ice again since last November
until last week. I guess I was just scared. Old bodies take time to heal.
Do the physical therapy. It works wonders. Train the other muscles to work
as the ligaments, because ligaments will never pop back like rubber bands.
With quad work and hamstring work, you'll be able to skate. My sis is a
physical therapist and personal trainer and has given me some great
exercises. If you want them, i'd be happy to e=mail you with some.

Well, Ian Michael was born 3/16/99, the night of my team's (and husband's)

I ended up having the C-Section, and all my abdominal muscles were cut from
hip to hip. My Dr. wasn't helpful at all about when I could get back into
playing- I don't think she realizes just how large a part abs play in the
  sport.

 Jules,
 I've had 2 c-sections(kids are 13 & 16 now). 7 months is a long time.You
should be on some kind of reconditioning program. I'm sure there are lots
of
articles in Mom mags @ this. My 16 yr. old son had emergency bowel
obstruction surgery July 4 and had 6" of sm. int. removed. This is a
sternum
to pubic hair line incision. He started working out w/ the Jr. Varsity
ft.ball team the end of Aug. w/ these restrictions: No blocking, no
crunches, no scrimmaging. Running and pushups were permitted. He was
allowed to fully participate in all activities at 9 weeks. This was towards
the end of Sept. So, it seems like you should be able to participate in
hockey. You do need to condition for it tho.
Your Dr. ought to know @ this stuff. My son's surgeon was very knowledgable
about physical restrictions after major surgery.
You should do a physical activity you enjoy to get you out of the house.
You
sound down. I hope this encourages you.

P.S. Enjoy your newborn son!! They grow-up so fast!!!!

Jill, I'm assuming you are not a butterfly-style goalie, so I am seconding
the other advice to you - stay active on the injured leg (it's the Medial
Collateral Ligament, BTW), continue to work diligently with a physical
therapist and let time work for you. Go by pain and stability, and give
yourself TIME. If you rush back you may not let the ligament heal fully and
you will wrestle with scar tissue problems in the future, as I did.
I was able to do straight-ahead activities like biking at 3-4 weeks
post-injury, running at six. I had a very severe Grade 2 in 1996 (someone
fell on my leg while I was it was stretched in a save position), came back
to play goal in 1997, and alas re-injured it Grade 2 (due to lack of
stretching and hydration) in 4/97 at Nationals. Had unsuccessful surgery to
try and repair the damage in 4/98, and have not played in goal since 12/97.
However, I decided to start skating out (left wing) in 6/99 and now my knee
feels super.
I thought I would never skate again without pain, but I am doing great now.
GIVE YOURSELF TIME. LISTEN TO YOUR PHYSICAL THERAPIST. LISTEN TO YOUR
KNEE. EAT WELL, DRINK LOTS OF WATER. STAY POSITIVE.
June (the former #30, now the new #13)
PS - Braces are mostly psychological for MCL injuries - you need to
strengthen your quad muscle (thigh) to do the work for your MCL. You shall
return!

Subject: Torn MCL

Hi -

Has anyone else out there experienced an MCL sprain? I tore up my MCL
(grade
II sprain) about 5 weeks ago. I know what my orthopedist told me, and I
know what my physical therapist told me, but I'm looking for a reality check
(from other hockey players.)

How long has it taken you to get back on the ice and able to skate all-out?
How long before skating without that cumbersome knee brace? Does it fully
recover, or will the knee always feel pain & stiffness in the morning?

For those of you who do not know, the MCL is the MEDIAL Crucial Ligament -
located on the inside of the knee. (It's the lesser known cousin of the
notorious ACL).

Thanks.

Jill
