Does anyone have any advice on starting a women's recreational inline
hockey league?

The league just started this year, and there are around 15 women now
(usually 2 teams of 6 show up). Our skill level is mostly
"pre-beginner" recreational adult inline hockey now, but we'd like to
integrate some practices/clinics into the program. A few of the women
are playing in the adult beginner hockey league, but I think most just
started playing this year. BTW, we're in the NYC area - email me
directly if you want info on joining.

On a side note, are there women rec ice hockey leagues out there?

Thanks,
RH

(A posting inspired by the BU Alumni Game-)
The Yale University Women's Ice Hockey Association will be holding its
annual Alumnae Game/Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, November 6-7, 1999.
Saturday the Yale Varsity women host Providence College at 1:30pm, and the
Yale men play St. Lawrence at 7:00 pm. On Sunday, the alumnae will skate at
1:00 pm and the Yale women play Northeastern at 3 pm, with a reception
following.
Please email June (email@hidden) to get more information.
Thanks!

I don't like having this kind of unsolicited off-topic posting on the
women-in-hockey list, especially from someone I don't recognize as a
regular contributor on female-hockey topics. If I wanted to participate in
a forum for fans of male professional hockey I would join one.

I personally don't think there was anything wrong with posting a message
about the NHLFA because most people who are into hockey usually watch the
NHL because there aren't many channels where you can see women's hockey
being played. I think that the people who got so upset by this were upset
for the stupidest reasons. Just because this is a women-in-hockey mailing
list doesn't mean the only thing that can be posted has to do with women's
hockey. yes, it is for women who play hockey and who are interested in it
but that doesn't just mean that the only topic of conversation that people
are interested in has to be women's hockey. The person who posted the
message was only trying to get more people interested in joining the NHLFA.
It's the only thing hockey fans can join cause I don't exactly see any
womens hockey fan associations around. Don't get me wrong, I do love women's
hockey but until we have anything of our own we can't help but loving the
men's game as well since it has been what we grew up watching on TV. If you
don't like what is being posted, don't bitch about it....just skip it and
read the next thing

If you are a member of the women-in-hockey mailing list, who ever said you
couldn't say what you wanted to say just because you don't regularly post
messages?? There's a first time for everything.

Subject: FW: Advice to a beginner hockey player wannabe

Hello,

I'm a 30-year-old woman that wants to play hockey. I've never
played. I am a beginner skater: I can't skate backwards nor
stop in my hockey skates. I'm taking 9 sessions of skating
lessons starting this month. I'm planning on practicing
skating this year; and then I'll join a beginning league next
year.

I'd appreciate any advice that you women hockey players
can give me. Also, I'd like to find a few e-mail pals to talk
about hockey from a woman's viewpoint.

Thanks,
Amy

Congratulations!

Advice on assorted hockey topics (which of course you can ignore as it
suits you):

Start collecting hockey equipment: put it on your Christmas list, try
stuff on in stores so you get an idea of prices and sizes, keep your ears
open if you hear about a co-worker with a rapidly-growing hockey-playing
teenager ...

Go watch some games of the women's beginner leagues this year - you'll be
able to see that it won't take long to fit in.

Buy a hockey helmet right away and wear it to your skating lessons - wear
other padding as well if it makes you feel more comfortable - feeling safe
helps a lot when you start learning to stop.

Oh, and don't listen to anybody who tries to make you feel stupid about
wanting to start playing hockey. Lots of women start in their 30's.

Welcome!

Louise

Subject: No hockey for me this season- again :(

Hi all-
Some of you may remember an old post from me about my pregnancy, and a
request for advice on getting back on the ice post-partum.

Well, Ian Michael was born 3/16/99, the night of my team's (and husband's)
last game. Nice timing, eh?

I ended up having the C-Section, and all my abdominal muscles were cut from
hip to hip. My Dr. wasn't helpful at all about when I could get back into
playing- I don't think she realizes just how large a part abs play in the
sport.

My league requires payment in full very soon (and a large payment, at that!),
so I decided to forego the league play in favor of a skills & drills clinic
or two over this coming season.

I recall a few of you replied to me about playing post-partum...and I'd like
any advice you can give me if you had a C-Sec. No one I know who had a C-Sec
even exercises(!!!) So they're no help.
