Women's
World Championship here Thursday evening. With
the loss, China finished third in Group A with
a
                             1-2-0 record. The U.S. (3-0-0 in
preliminary-round
play) will face Finland (2-1-0 in
preliminary-round
play), the second-place finisher from Group B,
in
                             the semifinals on Saturday.

Forward Jenny Schmidgall (Edina, Minn.) figured
in five of the six U.S. goals and led Team USA
with
five points (1-4). She was named the U.S.
Player
of the Game, while forward Karyn Bye (River
Falls, Wis.) notched a hat trick.

Forward Katie King (Salem, N.H.) tallied the
game-winning goal as she beat Team China
goaltender Lina Huo at 12:15 of the first
period to
make the score 1-0. Schmidgall doubled the U.S.
lead on a power-play tally at 5:59 of the
second
stanza. Cammi Granato (Downers Grove, Ill.) and
King assisted on the play. Bye converted on a
pass from Schmidgall at 16:32 to make the score
3-0 at the end of the second period.

Bye tallied her second goal at 2:20 of the
third
period, and forward Brandy Fisher (Colton,
N.Y.)
notched her first goal of the tournament at
16:33 to
make the score 5-0. Bye registered her third
goal
with less than two minutes remaining in the
game
to make the final score 6-0. Forward Stephanie
O'Sullivan (Dorchester, Mass.) assisted on all
                             three third-period goals.

"China has a strong defense that was very
effective early in the game," said U.S. Head
Coach
Ben Smith (Gloucester, Mass.). "But in the
second and third periods, Jenny Schmidgall and
Karyn Bye stepped up and created offense for
us. I
am proud that we stayed on track both
physically
                             and mentally tonight."

                             Team USA goaltender Laurie Belliveau
(Manchester, Mass.) stopped all eight shots she
faced to record the shutout and her second
victory
of the tournament. Huo turned aside 39 of 45
shots
                             in the losing effort.

After an off-day tomorrow, the U.S. will face
Finland in the second semifinal game on
Saturday
                             at 6:00 p.m. (11:00 a.m. EST). Canada, the
first-place finisher from Group B, will play

                 Canada shuts down Finland

By NEIL STEVENS -- Canadian Press

ESPOO, Finland -- Vicky Sunohara's breakaway shot and Sami
Jo
Small's perfect goaltending lifted Canada to a 1-0 victory
over Finland
that clinched first place in Group B at the women's world
hockey
                 tournament Thursday.

In the semifinals Saturday, Canada (3-0) will play Group A
runner-up
Sweden (2-1), and Finland (2-1) will face the United States
(3-0).
Canada, which won all four previous women's worlds, now is
23-0 in
                 tournament history.

In other games Thursday, the United States beat China 6-0,
Sweden
blanked Russia 7-0 and Germany edged Switzerland 5-4.

Betting shops handled 500,000 Finnish marks ($144,150 Cdn)
in wagers
on the outcome of the Canada-Finland game.

It was 0-0 after one period.

Nancy Drolet pushed in a rebound early in the game but
American
referee Vicki Kale ruled the net had been knocked off its
moorings.
All three penalties assessed in the opening period were
against Finland,
but Canada couldn't score -- even with two two-skater
advantages
totalling one minute 49 seconds. The closest it got during
the power
plays was Nathalie Rivard's slap shot off a post.

Canada led 1-0 after 40 minutes despite taking all five
penalties
signalled by Kale in the second period.

On Sunohara's even-strength goal at 6:00, Jayna Hefford
dug the puck
off the boards just inside Finland's blue-line and slid it
into the middle of
the zone. Goaltender Tuula Puputti's defence had
disappeared, and
Sunohara swooped in to take possession with a clear path to
the net.
She deposited a slider between Puputti's legs.

Small preserved the lead when she kicked out her right leg
to block a
slap shot by Katja Riipi on a 2-on-1 rush.

Kale turned the third period into theatre of the absurd.

Hefford scored on a breakaway, lifting the puck into the
top of the
Finnish net. The red light did not go on. As Canadians
celebrated, the
Finns wisely decided to keep skating. Sunohara wound up
with a
hooking penalty in rushing back to stop a Finnish break.
Kale blew her
whistle, finally, to send off Sunohara, and to ignore
Canadian pleas.
Replays on the video screen above centre ice showed the
puck entering
the net, but Kale ignored them.
Kale then assessed Canada a seventh consecutive penalty.

She then managed to put everybody in the same mood when
she gave
the Finns two consecutive penalties for too many skaters on
the ice.
Small stuck out her right arm to stop a Sari Krooks
breakaway shot in
the dying minutes. She was unbeatable.

GOPHERS SHUTOUT MAVERICKS FOR MIDWEST SHOWDOWN TITLE

Minnesota started slowly but scored twice in the second period and added four
more goals in the third period to defeat Minnesota State, Mankato 6-0 in the
championship game of the Midwest Showdown at Mariucci Arena.

Despite outshooting the Mavericks 22-1 in the opening period, Minnesota State
goalie Jenny Padget kept her team in the game by shutting out the Gophers in the
opening 20 minutes.

Ambria Thomas broke up the scoreless tie after Courtney Kennedy carried the puck
out of the Minnesota zone, hit Thomas with a pass at the far blue line and she
scored her 13th goal of the season at 4:23.

Kennedy then made it 2-0 with 1:49 to play in the second period when she picked
up a loose puck in the left corner of her own zone and went end-to-end for her
15th goal of the season.

Winny Brodt helped the Gophers clinch the game, scoring once in the final period
while setting up two other goals as Minnesota raised its record to 26-3-3 on the
year. Minnesota State, Mankato finishes its first season of varsity competition
at 14-15-0.

Padget recorded 48 saves for the Mavericks while Erica Killewald, who recorded
her first career assist on Thomas' goal, posted her seventh shutout of the
season with 12 saves.
