Hi All,

The NYS Empire Games first girls Ice Hockey Summer Games will be taking place
July 22-25 at "The Rinx" in Hauppague. As the coordinator for off-ice
officials I am presently seeking volunteers to work the games. We are in
need of scorekeepers, penalty box attendants, timekeepers, announcers and
goal judges to cover all games. Please contact me if you're interested in
getting involved. All volunteers will receive an Empire Games T shirt (and a
big pat on the back)! "-)

Thanks.

If male players have the potential to go for a career in hockey, female
ones should have the same potential, no matter why they started playing in
the first place. As has been mentioned before, blind idealism doesn't put
food on the table.

***** I agree that *idealistcally* women should have the same chance to earn
money in their sport as the men do. No question about that. But using your
own words form the previous email *IF THERE IS A MARKET FOR IT.* Apparantly,
and unfortunatley, at this point in time, there does not appear to be enough
of an interest in women's hockey to create a professional league that would
be profitable.

****Playing in, and being successful in the olympics, does not give everyone
the divine right to be paid for their talent in that particular sport.
What about all the people who play team handball? How come there is no
professional league? What about professional luge in the US? Let's not
forget how handsomely all those professional divers are paid.

****** No, it does not. But a solid education and hard work does. Case in
point - Eric Heiden. 'nuff said.

"If there is a market for it"-- don't those words just make you shudder when
used in connection with your favorite sport? sad but true, but professional
sports are, when all is said and done, a BUSINESS. And a busines tries to
turn a profit. The athletes are just a part of the system that is in place
and its success depends on the ability of the business to make money. how
many professional sports teams do you know of that are non-profit
organizations?

just because there is no women's professional hockey league doesn't mean
women's hockey is any less wonderful a sport than women's (or men's)
basketball, or figure skating, or men's hockey. why do we allow economics
to creep into every aspect of our being? do our efforts always have to end
in a paycheck? what about the intangible rewards?

we can and should continue to develop our sport and bring to the table new
ideas and challenges and see where it takes us. and if it takes us to
professional leagues, then so be it. but we shouldn't see that as the
pinnacle accomplishment for a sport. that just means that there's
entertainment value and someone wants to make a buck off it.

there are many factors that influence whether or not a sport is "marketable"
enough to support a professional league, but no amount of money in the world
should be able to replace the feeling you get from doing something you love
and truly enjoying it-- win or lose, olympian or mini-mite.
