The Chicago ICE Women's Hockey organization cordially invites you and your
team to join us in celebrating our second annual "Black & Blue"
Women's Tournament to be held April 23-25, 1999. The tournament will be
held at our home rink, Johnny's Ice House, the 'coolest place in the windy
city'. The rink is 5 minutes from downtown Chicago attractions and is in
the shadow of the United Center!

There will be 2 senior divisions (B & C) with 4-6 teams in each division.
All teams will be guaranteed 3 games, a weekend full of laughs, fun, good
hockey. Admission is free for all spectators, so bring your family
and friends! In case they can't handle the excitement of the hockey,
they can always shop at Water Tower or eat at Michael Jordan's, or attend
a Bull's game down the street (depending on what the NBA decides the
schedule is).

If you are interested or have any questions feel free to call Mary
Gutowski, 773.583.5120, e-mail email@hidden or the Chicago
ICE at email@hidden

>>1) What exercise do you do between hockey games that really keeps
you ready to play again?>>

I bike, rollerblade, do step aerobics and use an elliptical running
machine - not everyday, but a few days a week I do this - so I don't
get bored with one thing. I also lift weights to build muscle
endurance. This means that I lift a lighter weight usually 3 sets of
20-30 reps. It's a weight that will challenge me but not so heavy that
it's impossible to complete all of the reps in the sets. I take a 1-2
minute rest between sets. I do this for both legs and arms.

>>2) Is there anything in particular that you know really helps you
with a certain aspect of playing hockey?>>

I watch a lot of games and pay attention to the position I play. I
notice what other players do when I'm in a game - how they block shots
or go down on one knee and slide to keep the puck in the zone, whether
they score more with a slap shot or with wrist shots, etc.

>>3) Is there a certain way of eating before playing that helps you?>>

Since hockey is an anaerobic sport, eating complex carbs will not help
at all - so I try to eat simple sugars about 3 hours before game time
- - white potatoes, regular pasta and some protein such as chicken or
ground beef in the pasta sauce. I also like to have a Mountain Dew
about 1 hour before game time - I don't know why, but it seems to
help:-) Also lots of water during the day and a little more before the
game.

>>4)Do you get a nervous stomach before games, and have you found a
way to overcome it?>>

I don't usually get nervous unless it's a tournament. I try to feed
off the adrenaline and use it to my advantage, but usually the
nervousness goes away after a few minutes on the ice.

Good Luck!

Just ran across all 26 pages of the Canadian Hockey Handbook from the just
completed 3 Nations Tournament. Lots of information, photos etc.. Looks well
done.

You'll need the Adobe Acrobat reader installed. Go to: www.canadianhockey.ca
and look under the 3 Nations Cup link.

This has been an "age old" problem! Although coaching has improved whereby
coaches are taking a more pro-active attitude towards working with their
goalies, it's still obviously a serious problem for a lot of goaltenders!
If your coach won't take the "hint" (Good Goaltending Books) then you only
have two choices.
a) You become your own coach by reading tons of goaltending material and
developing your own goals / practice methods and self-analysis.
b) Change teams if you KNOW that the next team does, indeed, have a Goalie
coach.

>There's always room for improvement, especially when I've only been
goaltending

I'm impressed that you are searching for help. This quality alone will
cause you to
improve your game. It would be sad to see such an attitude go to waste!

>My team needs me, I'm THE goalie and we have someone that will play
>backup if I have to miss a game. (We may be getting a new coach.)

Well, hang in there. Keep working hard and your desires will pay off.

Mountain Dew is FULL of caffeine. More than a Coca Cola.

This only makes you "fell good" because it increases the simple sugars and
caffiene in your blood stream.

>From my limited knowledge, caffeine is not a good thing.
On top the the regular reasons, caffeine causes fiberous cists in female
breasts. This causes more difficulty in discovering cancerous lumps during
self exams.

I wish I could give a better account, medically, regarding why caffeine and
refined sugar is so bad. Maybe a medical proffessional can respond.

I quickly looked up caffeine on the web and found this:
- -------------
Next, regarding enhancement of sports or exercise physiology, true that it
enhances burning of fat, but my experience has been that the over stimulation
(say from a cup o' coffee or worse still from a power-drink,
like black booster, consumed about 30 min before exercise) is likely to cause
more injuries from "Superman" (or "Superwoman") effect. You feel you can push
much more than what you would normally (ought to be) training with!!

ALSO

The International Olympic Committee has banned the use of caffeine in their
competitions. Also, it may impair hand steadiness, which may be a concern
for some athletes.
- -------------

But, there is a lot of info available.

In the USA, that is, Mountain Dew has a high level of caffeine. In Canada,
Mountain Dew does not contain caffeine. I don't remember where Jenn is.

Have soemone videotape you in practice, and in game situations. If you can
actually SEE what you are doing, that would be a tremendous help. People can
TELL you what you are doing wrong, but it is never as good as seening for
yourself. This is great, not jsut for goalies, but for everyone on your team.
The possiblities for its use are endless!

Even if your coach can't wn';t analyze it with you, you can analyze it
yourself.

Subject: A girl on a guys team....continuted!

Hey everyone. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who
responded to my earlier letter concerning playing on my high school's
guys team. Your advice, stories, and support are greatly appreciated.
Thanks soooo much! I've decided that I really want to play on the team.
Today I talked to the teacher at my school that runs our ice hockey
program (it's more like a club sport because of the way my school has it
set up). He said that they would be happy to have me on the team and I
think I'm going to try out this coming fall. This spring I'll be
attending a power skating clinic as well as continuing to play on my
girls spring league. In the summer I'm going to go to another power
skating camp and also a shooting and scoring camp. I'm going to try to
skate and work out as much as I can in order to be ready for the season.
If any one has any advice on how to prepare for checking please let me
know. I am still not completely sure if Iām going to play for the
team...but Iām almost positive. I'm going to talk to some of my friends
on the guys team, as well as girls on my team that play for their
schools guys teams and see what everyone thinks. Thank you all once
again for your advice and comments. I'll keep you all updated on my
Quest to succeed on my high school team!
Thanks again to everyone,
Jenn
