If anyone can help with the question below, please cc a reply to my email
as it would be helpful to have the info as soon as possible!

Does anyone know what masks are legal in Canadian Adult female hockey? I
have a cat's eye cage on a Calcoat mask, which came with the mask and the
whole thing was marked CSA approved, and was told in my game tonight that
it's not legal and I have to change to a fully barred mask. I thought the
cage was Ok as the mask came CSA approved.

I play in
Vancouver, BC. in the Female Ice Hockey League.
Thanks!

GOPHERS USE THREE-GOAL THIRD TO COMPLETE PROVIDENCE SWEEP

For the second game in a row Providence goalie Sara DeCosta stymied Minnesota
but the Gophers came through with three goals in the final eight minutes to beat
the Friars 5-1.

DeCosta, who made 37 saves in a 1-0 loss Saturday, stopped 18 of 20 shots
through two periods, including a 16-save effort during the second period, to
keep the Friars within striking distance of Minnesota, which got first period
goals from Jenny Schmidgall and Courtney Kennedy, at 2-1.

Myia Yates got ProvidenceÍs only goal of the weekend at 10:05 of the second
period when she tipped a Valerie Bono shot from the left point on the power
play.

The scored remained 2-1 until Schmidgall got her second goal of the game, and 32
of the season, with 7:48 to play. Winny Brodt scored little more than two
minutes later and Kennedy clinched the game with her 13th of the season with
1:22 left in the game.

Minnesota, 25-2-2, held a 36-11 advantage in shots on goal as DeCosta made 36
saves for Providence, 17-10-2. Erica Killewald had 10 saves for the Gophers.

It must be CSA approved, and it will not be CSA approved if it has
a cat's eye cage. When you bought it , did you request the cat's
eye cage and they changed it? The reason is some sticks can fit
through the part of the cage in front of the eyes.

I bought an Eddy mask a few years back and it came with a
regular cage, but I found I couldn't see properly, so had it changed
to cat's eye. I never had any hassle, after many years, but
technically it's illegal.

I'm going to be in Toronto for all or part of the Nationals.
If anyone know how the provinces are doing regarding the playoffs?
Over here (in BC) we will be represented by the New Westminster
Lightning, in Ontario by the Aero's, Quebec Jofa-Titan or will they send
an all-star team again? Anyhow, sorry for the run on sentence. If
anyone can add more to that!

Thx to whoever it was a couple of weeks ago here who encouraged NPR's Bill
Littlefield, host of 'Only A Game', to cover more women's sports,
especially women's ice hockey. Heard the piece on this past weekend's show.
It's on 7-8am on Saturdays here in central Indiana.
Part of it was from Bright Arena, where Brown lost to Harvard, 6-2. The
follow-up interviews were terrific. In fact the whole hour had lots of
women & sports: soccer, hockey, hockey Olympians, authors.
I believe the press responds better to positive suggestions, not just 'you
never report on...'. Acknowledging a good job is equally important. Thx
for the effort to help Littlefield make it happen!

Mitzi and anyone else who might be interested--

I am the one who initially wrote to Littlefield and shared the subsequent
exchange with this list. I, too, noticed lots more coverage of women's
sports in the last two shows, especially last Saturday's. (The week before,
he seemed to go out of his way, during coverage of the Daytona 500, to
mention a special NASCAR race just for women!)

I e-mailed him Saturday afternoon to thank him for the coverage. I hope
others on this list did/do the same.

Last Saturday, he read part of my initial e-mail on the air. He basically
just defended himself in response, and said that people like Rebecca Lobo
and Cammi Granato would be surprised at my charges. Again, I maintain that
*occasional* big stories on women athletes is not the same as consistent,
routine coverage of women's sports. He also mentioned in his defense that
80% of the mail that week had been from women. I fail to see how that means
that he covers women's sports adequately.

Just one other point--he mentioned last Saturday that many of the names of
the US Women's National Soccer team are household names. Well, I think his
household must be a bit different from the typical person's! Yes, Mia Hamm
is pretty well known, but I couldn't tell you any names of her teammates,
and I consider myself to be a pretty well-informed fan of women's sports!
If shows like his covered women's soccer ROUTINELY, we might be more
familiar with the athletes.

Anyway, I, too, am happy so far with the Only a Game results!

Finalists for National Player of the Year Award, A Who's Who of ECAC's
Best

USA Hockey Foundation president Walter L. Bush, Jr., announced Tuesday
the names of the 10 candidates for the 1999 Patty Kazmaier Memorial
Award, presented to the most outstanding
player in NCAA women's ice hockey. All 10 call the ECAC home.

Harvard University features three candidates, while Brown University and
the University of New Hampshire boast two each.

The candidates are Ali Coughlin, Princeton; Hillary Witt, Northeastern;
Sara DeCosta, Providence; A.J. Mleczko, Harvard; Tara Mounsey, Brown;
Angela Ruggiero, Harvard; Nicki Luongo,
New Hampshire; Tammy Shewchuk, Harvard; Carisa Zaban, New Hampshire; and
Ali Brewer, Brown. Coughlin and Witt are repeat selections.

"The USA Hockey Foundation is proud to recognize these outstanding
student-athletes," said Bush. "These talented players personify on- and
off-ice excellence, making them worthy
candidates for this prestigious award."

Nominations came from the head coaches of women's varsity ice hockey
programs throughout the United States. Three finalists for the award will
be announced March 15, and the Kazmeier
Award itself will be presented to the winner in St. Paul, Minn., on March
25 at the Radisson Hotel St. Paul.

The recipient will be chosen by an 11-member selection committee
comprised of women's coaches, representatives of the print and broadcast
media, and a representative of USA Hockey.

The inaugural Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award was presented last March in
Boston, Mass., to University of New Hampshire forward Brandy Fisher. The
award is named in honor of the late
Patty Kazmaier, who was a four-year varsity letterwinner and All-Ivy
League honoree for Princeton from 1981-82 through 1985-86. An
accomplished athlete who excelled in ice hockey, field
hockey and lacrosse, Patty Kazmaier-Sandt died on Feb. 15, 1990, at the
age of 28 following a long struggle with a rare blood disease.
