$200.00 will buy you 6 half-hour sessions with a private skating instructor.

That may be more worth it.

Check with your local rink.

I am looking for information or a resource for Canadian Girls programs (HS
or college up there such as John Abbott College as well as Midget teams).
If anyone has such a list or could direct me to a source I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

Subject: MINNESOTA WOMEN'S HOCKEY

THIS WEEK-Minnesota begins a four-game homestand to close out the regular
season by taking on Providence Saturday and Sunday.
The series opener gets underway at 2:35 p.m. Saturday and the teams
will close out the set Sunday, beginning at 1:05 p.m.

MINNESOTA RECENTLY-The fourth-ranked Gophers swept their final two road
games of the season, defeating Augsburg 10-0 Saturday and Minnesota State,
Mankato 10-1 Sunday.
Four players recorded three-point nights Saturday, led by Shannon
Kennedy (Woburn, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) and Winny Brodt
(Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) with two goals and an assist each.
Ambria Thomas (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) added a goal and two
assists while Jenny Schmidgall (Edina, Minn./Edina) chipped in with three
assists. Courtney Kennedy (Woburn, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols)
added two goals.
Minnesota set a school record with 72 shots on goal while Crystal
Nicholas (Tulsa, Okla./Union) needed to make just four saves for her
school-record sixth shutout of the season.
Sunday, the Gophers used a five-goal first period, two coming from
Kris Scholz (Hugo, Minn./Stillwater Area), and scored three times in a
29-second span en route to victory.
Scholz got the game's first two goals, the second coming at 6:55 of
the opening period. Thomas scored just 14 seconds later and Tracy Donaghue
(Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) end the spree at 7:24.
Shannon Kennedy also chipped in with a pair of goals while Thomas
had five points, including a career-high four assists, and Erica Killewald
(Troy, Mich./Troy) recorded her 13th win of the season by stopping 13
shots.

PROVIDENCE RECENTLY-The Friars dropped three league games last week to fall
to 16-8-2 on the season. They opened the week Wednesday with a 4-1 loss at
Brown in the Mayor's Cup. Jessica Tabb scored Providence's lone goal while
Sara DeCosta had 36 saves.
Saturday, the Friars lost a defensive battle at Northeastern, 1-0.
DeCosta stopped 27 shots but Hilary Witt's power-play goal for the Huskies
was the difference.
Sunday saw the Friars at Harvard to take on the top-ranked Crimson
and the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie early in the third period before the
hosts scored three unanswered goals to put the game away. Kim Mathias and
Myia Yates scored for Providence while DeCosta had 32 saves.

JANUARY ATHLETE OF THE MONTH-Sophomore goalie Erica Killewald was named
Minnesota Women's Athletics Athlete of the Month for January after posting
a 5-1-1 record, including four shutouts, along with a 1.34 goals against
average and a .934 save percentage.
On back-to-back nights, Jan. 29-30, Killewald shut out both the
defending Canadian and American collegiate champions. She handed Concordia
a 3-0 defeat by stopping 30 shots and followed that with a 32-save effort
in a 0-0 tie with New Hampshire. Coupled with her shutout of Wilfrid
Laurier a week earlier, she had a shutout streak of 201:24.
In 1999, she has an 8-1-1 record with five shutouts, all of which
came in a 23-day span, as well as a 1.16 GAA and a .951 save percentage.

THE CAPTAINS-Gopher captains Kris Scholz and Amber Hegland (Farmington,
Minn./Farmington) have been leading the team on and off the ice this
season.
Scholz, who followed a 15-game scoring streak with a four-game
scoreless streak, has gotten back on track and has 11 points in her last
five games, all of which have been multiple-point games.
Hegland has also scored in each of her last five games, tallying
seven points during that time. On the season, she has not recorded a
negative plus/minus rating in any game this season and has 14 goals and 31
points in her first season of hockey since 1993-94, when she played for the
boys team at Farmington High School.

GETTING OFFENSIVE-Last season, Emily Buchholz (Waupun, Wis./Waupun) led the
Gophers' defense with 12 assists. This season, three of the team's
blueliners have reached that total.
Brittny Ralph (Brooklyn Center, Minn./Brooklyn Center) leads the
Minnesota defense with 15 assists while Buchholz has 14 and Courtney
Kennedy has 12.
In all, the Gophers regular group of six have scored 24 goals, led
by Kennedy with 11, and 79 points.

TAKING A BREAK-When the U.S. Women's National Team heads to Finland, for
the World Championships, March 8-14, Jenny Schmidgall will be accompanying
the team.
Schmidgall will miss the Midwest Showdown, March 7th and 12th, but
will be available should the Gophers be invited to the American Women's
College Hockey Alliance championship game, March 26-27.
This will be Schmidgall's second tour of duty with the national
squad. Last year, she was a member of the team that claimed the gold medal
at the Winter Olympics. She scored two goals and five points at the Olympic
games and tallied nine goals and 21 points in 30 games for the season.

REPRESENTING THEIR COUNTRY-First-year center Jenny Schmidgall and sophomore
center Winny Brodt played for the U.S. Women's Select Team at the Three
Nations Cup in Finland, Dec. 10-15.
Canada grabbed a 2-1 win over the United States, Dec. 10, in the
tourney opener, but the U.S. rebounded the next day with a 3-2 win over
Finland as Schmidgall assisted on the game-tying goal and then scored the
game-winner 56 seconds into the final period.
After a two-day respite, the U.S. again fell to Canada, Dec. 14,
4-3 in a shootout before closing play with a 4-3 win over Finland.

NATURAL BORN KILLERS-After killing 36 consecutive penalties, Minnesota's
streak of consecutive penalty kills came to an end Sunday when MSU,
Mankato's Michelle Sikich banked a puck off a Gopher player and past goalie
Erica Killewald.
Minnesota had not allowed a power-play goal since the first period
of a 6-4 win over Concordia, Jan. 16, in Lake Placid, N.Y., a stretch of 10
games.

THE SERIES-Minnesota holds a 2-0-0 lead in the all-time series but the two
teams will be meeting for the first time on one teams home ice.
The Gophers posted victories over the Friars at the Princeton
Thanksgiving Invitational and the Brown Holiday Invitational last season.

WHEN LAST WE MET-Minnesota earned a 3-0 win over Providence, Dec. 29, 1997,
in Providence at the Brown Holiday Invitational.
The Gophers won despite being outshot 39-18. Erica Killewald
recorded a career-best 39 saves to earn the shutout while Nadine Muzerall
and Ambria Thomas each had a goal and an assist.

NATIONAL STATISTICS-Minnesota was ranked highly in a number of team

overall record and a 43-9-5 mark at Minnesota.
She began her coaching career at Colby College, where she led the
White Mules, one of only two non-Division I schools at the time in the
12-team Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, to a 12-9-1 overall record
in 1995-96, earning ECAC Co-Coach of the Year honors as well as being named
the New England Hockey Writers' Coach of the Year. While at Colby, she also
recruited and coached ECAC Player of the Year Meaghan Sittler.
At the national level, she was the assistant coach for the gold
medal-winning team at the 1998 U.S. Olympic Festival. In December, she will
serve as an assistant for the U.S. National team that competes in the Three

A native of Plymouth, Minn., and a 1981 graduate of Wayzata High
School, Halldorson played four years at Princeton, where she was a
co-captain and all-conference performer while leading the Tigers to three
Ivy League titles. She graduated from Princeton in 1985 with a degree in
psychology.
A member of the 1987 U.S. National Women's Team and three national
club championship teams with the Minnesota Checkers, Halldorson returned to
her alma mater in 1987 to begin her collegiate coaching career as an
assistant.

IT'S HOME-The home of Gopher Women's Hockey is Mariucci Arena (9,700). One
of the finest college hockey facilities in the country, Mariucci Arena will
be Minnesota's home until the new women's hockey facility, scheduled to
open in the fall of 2000, is completed.
Known as one of the toughest arenas in the nation on visiting
teams, the Gophers are 20-3-4 in the five-year old building.

ON THE AIR-A pair of Gopher games will be aired live by Midwest Sports
Channel this season.
The first telecast was Minnesota's clash with Harvard, Nov. 5, in
the opening game of the All-American East-West Challenge.
The second will be this Saturday as part of a doubleheader with the
Minnesota men's team. The women's game gets underway at 2:35 p.m. as the
Gophers take on Providence, to be followed by the men's clash with St.
Cloud State at 7:05 p.m.
Veteran broadcaster Frank Mazzocco will handle play-by-play duties
while former Minnesota North Star Tom Reid does the color commentary.

ON THE AIR, PART II-Eight Gopher games will be carried by KKMS-980 AM radio
this season.
KKMS broadcast the Nov. 27-28 games from Princeton's Hobey Baker
Rink at the Princeton Thanksgiving Invitational and also carried the
Concordia and New Hampshire games, Jan. 29-30, during the Citizens Bank
Border Battle at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.
The schedule also includes four home, two of which are left. They
will broadcast Sunday's game, beginning at 1 p.m., and next Friday's game
versus Brown, starting at 7 p.m.

Gopher volleyball standout Sarah Pearman handling the color commentary.

Subject: Admin -- plaidworks moved to new network.

Okay, folks, w've done it.

Tonight we moved plaidworks to our new, faster network. Everything
seems to be working fine -- as usual, DNS is propgating slowly but
surely, so there might be some delays or short-term inabilities to
connect to our servers.

If you can't connect to our stuff, try an nslookup -- if our sites
still point to a 207 network, your DNS is out of date. Our new
network is a 209 network. (you can reiniialize DNS, or simply wait.
It should fix itself).

If you run into problems, or if you lose connectivity and it doesn't
reappear by, oh, 5PM Wednesday, you can e-mail me at email@hidden
and we can try to see what's going on. For users with DNS that works
properly, it ought to be fixed up before you get to work (except our
overseas users).

Mail delivery looks much, much faster, and access to the web site is
as well. I'd be interested in how the new network works for you, and
how it compares to the old network. We had some "dead" spots with the
old network that simply sludged out a lot, and this new network
shouldn't have those -- but I'm sure we'll find new places where
things are less than perfect....

But so far, this has been a pretty painless upgrade. Knock on wood.
