I've just finished reading (and passed on to my 12 year old daughter)
"Crashing the Net" expected publishing date is set for April 1999. It is the
story of the US Women's Olympic team. The writer is a woman's studies
professor at Dartmouth I believe and she does an excellent job of weaving
basic fact information about the players and the games with the larger view of
women playing sports from a women's studies viewpoint. The copy I read was an
editors proof and I can't wait to see what the published book looks like with
photos and all. I have to admit I read it in one sitting and found myself
weeping at times. The final team cuts was an especially powerful segment.

McGill earns point against defending CIAU Champions

The McGill Martlets varsity women's hockey club did something,
Saturday, they haven't done since the 1984-85 season. They earned a
point against the defending CIAU Champion Concordia Stingers.

Canadian National Team goalie, Kim St. Pierre, turned aside 35
shots and the Martlets failed to score on any of their 19 shots as the
two teams skated to a rare 0-0 tie in Quebec University Women's Hockey
League play, at McGill's McConnell Arena.

The point snaps a 48 game losing streak to Concordia, a perennial
powerhouse in North America. The unbeaten Stingers are 9-0-1 in league
play, while McGill improves to 6-4-2.

This is a busy week for McGill with three games. The Martlets visit
College St. Laurent, Wednesday, before concluding the regular season,
Friday, at John Abbott College. Saturday, McGill travels to UNH for a
non-conference match.

For JS and other premier high school age players

I just heard about a new program at Bowdoin College in New Hampshire called
Hockey 136. They have a girl's overnight camp June 21-25, 1999 and they
only accept 136 (8 groups of 17) girl's. It is a College Recruiting Camp
designed for elite players only (jr/sr - possibly so) so if you fit their
criteria you should check them out asap. Good overnight programs like this
tend to fill very quickly.

The background of the camp director is in education and hockey. They appear
to offer an excellent mix of hockey, hockey information and college prep
information. Their email address is email@hidden

Since you are in the same area as me, probably skating at the same rinks,
these are the guidelines they gave me at the Ice House. You have about 15
hrs per sharpening if you skate at EPIC, about 1/2 that at Providence since
their ice is much nicer (harder). My sharpenings last about 10 days -
that's about 6 hours at EPIC and 6 at Providence. I can tell they need to
be sharpened when my skates start slipping while doing hard-skating
crossovers. One of the other girls gets hers sharpened when her skates
start to "hop" when she does hard stops (and she's good enough it's not
just that she's sitting back too far on her skates). After awhile you can
just sort of "feel" when you don't have as much control.

By the way, how is the league going for you? Whose team are you on?

You are suppose to sharpen your skate every 8-10 skates, but I really all
depends on how hard you are skating and for how long. If you are making sharp
turns, and your foot slips out it usually is a good indication to get them
sharpened.

GOPHERS COMPLETE THREE-GAME WEEKEND WITH SHUTOUT OF MAVERICKS

Minnesota completed a three-game weekend sweep with its second consecutive
shutout, a 4-0 win over Minnesota State, Mankato at Mariucci Arena.

Playing its third three-game weekend in four weeks, the Gophers swept
Cornell, 6-1 and 5-0, and used a three-goal outburst midway through the
second period of Sunday's game to down the Mavericks.

Despite out shooting Minnesota State 15-3 in the opening 20 minutes,
Minnesota was unable to get on the board until Ambria Thomas scored with 42
seconds left in the first period.

Maverick goalie Jenny Padget kept her team in the game, stopping 16 of the
Gophers' first 17 shots before Shannon Kennedy scored at 7:07 of the second
period. Jenny Schmidgall added her 29th goal of the season at 8:36 and
Amber Hegland closed out the scoring a minute later.

Minnesota had a 45-14 advantage in shots on goal with Padgett stopping 41
shots while Crystal Nicholas recorded her fifth shutout of the season by
stopping 14 shots.

The Gophers return to action next weekend with a pair of road games. They
will be at Augsburg for a 7:05 p.m faceoff Saturday and at Minnesota State
Sunday beginning at 4:05 p.m.

Subject: Re: response to broken collar bone

Thanks to all who responded to my request for reassurance about my 12 yr. old
daughter's broken collar bone sustained when she missed her check and hit the
boards. She returned for 2 games at the 6 wks. point. She gave checks and
received checks and I'm happy to report the result was only a little soreness.
She worked-out with the team for 2 practices(no scrimmage) at week 5. This
helped alot but she is still rusty and not in condition. In the end, I pretty
much left it up to Olivia whether or not she felt ready to return to action.
She is definitely not 100% but she has an extremely high pain tolerance level.
So, I'm sure it might be different for others.
Thanks again, Debbie (a hockey Mom!)
