From: Chuq Von Rospach
Subject: Warning -- email attacks on plaidworks mail list members

This is a warning to all of our users who are subscribed to a
Plaidworks mailing list. This is a very important message, so please
read it.

For the last few days, members of some of our lists have been
attacked by an unknown party. This person is sending email with
headers forged to look like they're coming from our mailing lists and
to look like replies to messages posted to the list. These attacks
include an attachment that is a PC virus known as messagemates, which
can do serious damage to an IBM compatible computer.

The plaidworks mailing lists do not allow attachments to be posted,
and in fact, these messages do not come from plaidworks and never
pass through our system, so there's no way we can prevent them;
they're entirely forged and being sent by a hostile third party. If
you get any message claiming to be from a plaidworks mailing list
that has any kind of attachment, assume it's hostile.

We are working to track down the person doing this -- the local
district attorney has been contacted, and we've been referred to the
FBI, as it looks like this is a federal felony, and we plan on
investigating this and prosecuting to the fullest extent.

If you get one of these messages, please forward a copy to me for our
evidence file (we need full headers on the mail messages, and any
other information you think might be relevant), and if any of you
know something that might help us track this person down and stop
them (and/or get them convicted for this stunt), please e-mail me
privately. I have my suspicions about what's going on here, but we
don't yet have enough evidence for warrants or arrests. We are
getting closer, though.

Because of this attack, for the time being I've disabled access to
all of our list archives, to prevent anyone from using them to
harvest e-mail addresses. They won't return until I can secure them
from possible abuse in the future -- I apologize if this causes any
inconvenience.

If you do not post to our mailing lists, you should be under no risk
here -- our subscriber lists have not been accessed. it's only
members who are posting to our lists, and so far, only a couple of
our lists have been attacked, but under the assumption that all of
our lists are at risk, I'm sending this message to everyone. Again,
if you get any message with an enclosure that pretends to be from a
plaidworks mailing list, assume that it's got a hostile virus in it,
and do not access it.

I apologize for this, even though our machine isn't involved. To put
it mildly, I'm rather upset that someone has decided to attack our
users this way, and I plan on doing everything in my power to make
that person and the sites that are hosting that person as miserable
as humanly possible.

Oh, and Merry Christmas and may your holidays be fun. Just watch out
for viruses.

Can someone give me an address. Thanks.

Subject: Update on: Warning -- email attacks on plaidworks mail list members

I have an update on this e-mail virus attack. There is good news, and
there is bad news.

The good news: based on some discussions with other list admins, it
seems pretty clear that this is not, in fact, an attack on plaidworks
or the mailing lists.

Unfortunately, the bad news is that we have a new virus on the
internet that is propogating rapidly.

For more information, see
 for the
official score on this beast. But basically, once it infects a system
(it infects windows boxes), when an infected user receives e-mail,
the virus mails itself back out, and attempts to infect the sender of
the message.

If you run windows, you are susceptible to this worm, and you may, in
fact, be infected and passing the infection on to other list members
and anyone else sending you e-mail.

It is imperative (to ALL users) that if you aren't running anti-virus
software, on any platform, that you get it installed. If you're
running Windows, please get your anti-virus software updated (the
Symantec software update is available from the above link) and test
your system. Do not assume that your anti-virus software will protect
your or identify this virus without updating the virus definitions,
and even more especially, DO NOT ASSUME YOU ARE SAFE. This virus is
starting to propogate all over the internet, and it's less than ten
days old. I've already seen reports of the virus responding on three
mailing lists here on plaidworks, and that's a very bad sign. I'm
guessing at this point three or four subscribers are already infected.

Protect yourself. And take some time to clean up your system so you
protect those you talk to.

Any user of the mail lists found to be propogating this virus will be
removed to protect all of our other users - if you are infected, you
will propogate this virus simply by reading your e-mail. You do NOT
have to post to the mailing lists to send out the infection. And you
are not safe from this virus if you don't post to the lists, because
this virus can vector in from ANY e-mail source or any mailing list.

Be very wary of e-mail with enclosures from anyone, folks. Make sure
your anti-virus software is up to date and running, and check your
systems.

Oh, one more note on this virus update -- you don't need to send me
any more copies of the virus. I want to thank everyone who's sent
information and feedback already, becuase it was very helpful
tracking down the scope of the problem. I would appreciate it if
users would send me a note if they receive a copy of this damn thing,
but I merely need to know what list it was attached to, I don't need
the entire message.

Appreciate all of your help and cooperation and understanding as we
fight this thing.

And Happy holidays to all, however you choose to celebrate this time
of year. For us, this year the random number generator signed us up
for Mithraism....
