Another Recruit Added To Badger Womenâs Hockey Squad

The University of Wisconsin and head womenâs hockey coach Julie Sasner announced
today that Roberta Shufeldt (Romulus, Mich.) will join the hockey program.
Shufeldt, a transfer student, will enroll for the fall semester with two years
of eligibility remaining.

The defenseman played two years for the University of New Hampshire from 1996-
98. She attended Oakland Community College in Waterford, Mich., last year.
Shufeldt graduated from Woodhaven High School in Flat Rock, Mich., in 1996
having earned varsity letters in cross country, softball and tennis.

"Roberta will add experience to our young squad, coming in as a junior,ä said
Sasner. ãShe is a steady defenseman. We will look to her for leadership on and
off the ice."

The signing of Shufeldt brings the first recruiting class in school history to
eight. The Badgers previously signed Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Saskatchewan), Sis
Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.), Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska), Chandra Gunn
(Huntington Beach, Calif.), Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), MSU,
Mankato transfer Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Jackie MacMillan
(Buffalo, Minn.).

The Badger season starts with open tryouts on September 20. The first game in
Wisconsin womenâs hockey history is scheduled for Friday, October 8 at the Kohl
Center. The puck drops in the two game series with Minnesota-Duluth at 7:05 p.m.
The second game of the series will be at the Kohl Center on October 9 at 7:05
p.m.

    I'm a first-time contributor to this forum. My daughter's 15U summer team
played at a tournament in Grand Rapids, MN this week, (they won!!) and I
thought some of you would enjoy a true story her coach told us.
He was at a rink in Plymouth, MN this winter, and chatted with a woman he
knew vaguely. His daughter had just left the ice, and hers was just starting
drills. She commented that her son had just turned five, and he asked if he
was going to be starting hockey, too. She said no, that he wasn't interested.
He had been going to rinks since he was an infant, for all his sister's
practices and games, and when his mom asked whether he wanted to play hockey,
too, he curled his lip in disgust and said, "Are you kidding? Hockey is a
girl's sport!"

I hate to be a spoil-sport about this, because LOL, it truly is a cute
little story. Isn't it sad, and strange how little boys are socialized
into thinking that anything related to girls and women is only worth a lip
curled in disgust. I much prefer that when I was watching the World Cup,
my 6 and 10 year old nephews were jumping up and down saying they wanted to
be Mia Hamm.

In early October, eight years ago, we started the Women's Ice Hockey Club
at The Ohio State University. There were 7 potential players at our first
meeting, including some beginners. There were no female teams registered
with USA Hockey anywhere in Ohio. We had to drive to Detroit and Chicago
to find anyone to play against. This season OSU will have a varsity
women's team in a league, and there seem to be female teams forming all
over Ohio (anywhere with arenas, that is.)

In Canada, the youngest branch of Girl Guides Canada (a single-sex
organization) is Sparks. The youngest kids in Scouts Canada (newly co-ed
at all levels) are Beavers. My 5-year-old niece was telling me that this
fall she'll be a Spark, so to include my 3.5-y-o nephew in the
conversation, I said that when he was 5, he could be a Beaver. Both kids
"corrected" me right away, saying "No, Jessica's a Beaver, Beavers is for
girls", and my inventive nephew told me that *he* was gonna be a "Spark-Cub!"

Louise,
who would like to hear from anyone currently connected with OSU's women's
club team ...

I glanced at a copy of the National Post today and noticed an article on a
new women's league, including teams from Quebec and Ontario. Can't remember
too many of the details, nobody's getting paid, but supposedly there is some
corporate support and the hope that it will lay the groundwork for a pro
league after the 2002 Olympics.

Anyone with the full story or a URL?
