Subject: Re: Girls Playing High School Hockey

What Ron had to say made a lot of sense. Make sure that your daughter has
good coaching in taking and giving checks and playing heads up hockey. Make
sure she's playing at the right level of hockey for her. Make sure she's
challenged but don't push her too hard or put her in a situation where she is
not prepared. High school hockey teams can really vary in level of play.
Even teams within the same town can have widespread skill levels/talent pools.

Regarding the prep school path, I have been there with my daughter. This is
not something that you enter into lightly, or jump in without doing your
homework first. It can be a great experience for your daughter and may be a
good path for her to take. It may also be very disappointing. My advice is
to thoroughly check out the school, make a visit and talk to other parents
and students. How are the student athletes treated Vs the other students?
How are the girls treated at the school Vs the boys? Check out the dorm
rooms and the showers and the classrooms and the dining hall. Try to meet
with some of the teachers. Review the handbooks thoroughly. Look the
curriculum over carefully. If things don't work out at the school, will your
daughter be able to transfer courses back to her old high school? Ask about
incidental expenses and what the student will be expected to pay for above
and beyond tuition, room and board. How much will textbooks cost each
semester? Is the school completely closed during breaks - have you factored
in the travel back and forth to school 4+ times per year? Find out what the
food is like. Is there a grocery store nearby, school supply store nearby?
Where can she get tampons when she needs them? What happens if she gets
injured or sick? How do students get back and forth to the store, movies,
eating out? What are the rules? Study Hall? Phone calls? Computer and
Internet access? What about when the team travels? Who pays for that? How
many girls share a hotel room? Are there any female chaparones?

Remember no matter how good the hockey program is, when the season is over,
it's over. Will your daughter be happy at the school the rest of the school
year? Remember that the schools are very anxious to "recruit" your daughter
to come, especially if she's a good player and a good student. Don't get
caught up in all the hype. Girls can be successful and can go on to play
college hockey without going to prep school.

Going to a camp like Dartmouth's is a good idea. This is a high caliber camp
and will help you make some college hockey connections. Another good camp
for girls is the RinkSport Camp. It is offered in different parts of the
country each summer. Camp Director Kush Sidhu will help you find the camp
that's best for your daughter and with the most competitive players. His
email is email@hidden. I can't stress it enough to check out ALL of
your options first. Take your time and do what's best for you and your
daughter.

Good luck!
