I love playing with a bunch of guys, sometimes i feel more challenged. As with an all-girl team i get to work on skill. My locker room situations have been ok. At my home rink I have my own locker room -- more like a closet w/ folding chairs, but it doesn't smell so bad. I go into the guys locker room for team meetings and stuff but get spared the sometimes unbearible "talk". When visiting rinks i usually get the unused officals room.
I'd have no problem dressing infront of the guys -- I wear more under my equipment than they do. =)

Jennie,

The Colorado Xtreme, 19 and Under, Tier 1 (AAA) girls team is holding
tryouts Sept 4 and Sept 5 in the Denver/Colorado Springs area. If you feel
you are really ready for competitive play and would like a chance to play
for a premier team in Colorado, email me.

The Colorado Xtreme travels far and wide (as well as playing many boys teams
in the state) to give the girls on the team exposure to college
coaches/scouts. The team also had 3 players selected to attend the National
Junior Olympic Development Camp at the Lake Placid, NY Olympic Training
Center this summer. Great girls hockey is alive in Colorado.

Also, there will soon be an all girls recreation league for high school age
girls probably starting this fall. If your rink has enough girls to start a
team, let me know. I am here to help.

For what it's worth, I went to high school in the same zone as Amanda Benoit
(she's on the Canadian National Team now). I distinctly recall being in our
students' council office and having two guys talk beside me about how
Eastdale had this "chick" on their team who thought she was good, and how
they were going to run her. They were generally nice (albeit agressive)
guys, but there's this thing about hockey...

In high school it will always be tough - it's a tough time of a kid's life.
Everyone is trying so hard to impress/be cool/etc. that being a girl on a
boy's team will probably be tough. Even though it's more common now, I
still admire anyone who does it.

Playing with guys greatly improved my game, and made me keep my head up in
the 3 contact games I played! It's always faster and harder, you're forced
to become better. My skills have actually fallen since being unable to play
rec hockey once a day at university.

Just MHO,
Dawn

Subject: Re: girls and guys

I started as the manager of my high school guys team and did that for two
years because I loved the sport. The other managers did it because they
wanted to screw the players, but eventually the guys trusted me more because
I actually got things done. A family friend who made it very clear to me
that I shouldn't be doing that-- girls shouldn't manage guys teams,
specifically because of behavior like that of my fellow managers. I just did
my job and that seemed to quiet most of the immaturity.

When I got into college, we started a pretty low-key club team and I was one
of the three or four girls that came out. As a completely new player, all of
a sudden I acted really ditzy. Very out of character for me. I mellowed out
when I saw that I wasn't actually the worst player there.

Eventually we went to a tournament, and I was the only girl in the whole
thing. I couldn't help thinking to myself that even though this was a
no-check tournament, I was shying away from getting physical. I wanted, I
guess, to prove myself or something, but the little female conscience told
me "ooh, don't do that, you'll get a bruise!" It was a really bizarre
situation for me, probably the first time I was forced to confront this kind
of behavior. My own reaction actually surprised me more than anything.

Re: locker rooms, yeah, I felt weird. I actually had to dress with the guys
the very first time, just so they could tell me how to put everything on
properly :P After that, I did it in the bathroom. I didn't even know where
to leave my bag-- should I leave it in the bathroom? Should I put it with
everyone else's? I felt I wasted the rink manager's time when i was the only
girl there and he would open a room just for me. I didn't want to have to
stick out even more than I already did.

At the tournament, we all just dressed together; I just wore my regular
undies and it didn't make any difference. I finally felt a great sense of
camaraderie from the tournament situation that took away a lot of my feeling
stupid about the whole thing, and I think overall that's the most important
thing. If you know your team well, you won't feel so wacky about the whole
thing.

I guess in general my feeling about not being so physical comes from the way
I was raised, even though I was never one for frilly dresses or the like.
There's obviously a double standard, like we can certainly be physical on
the ice but still we may be expected to show up in class the next day with
perfect makeup and a miniskirt. I love telling people I play hockey, but I
still feel compelled to be a little more feminine these days, as if to make
up for it. That's too bad.

Hope these shared experiences hit home with some other people.

I played for BU 1990-94. Now, when I hear about all of the teams that
we used to play against who are now varisty, I wonder what BU's
problem is! They have such a great following for their men's team,
why do they think it would be much different for the women's team?

We played against Northeasters, Harvard, MIT, U-Maine (Orono), Boston
College, Conn College, U-Conn, U-Mass-Amherst, Wesleyan, and even
U-Vermont once (Score, 17-1, we lost, of course), plus lots of other
teams. When we played against Northeastern, they were very nice. They
got their 9 goals and then the whole team used opposite sticks and
still skated circles around us.

Hey Becca - are you out there?

Jenn

PS. Ok, now I just have to bitch..this is the second time I've sent this

forgot to delete the original sender's sig. Now I understand why
plaidworks would check to make sure the reply isn't just one line with a
multi-lined original message, but it's just plain annoying! Now I've been

always remember to delete long signatures! *whew* ok, I feel better..back

This topic is so fimilar to me. You see this is going to be
my tenth year playing hockey with boys. I have a lot of
experience. Last year I played Bantam A and started on
Defense and at the end of the year I won defenseman of the
year. So find that there is better competition playing with
guys. I 'm going to continue to play with the boys next year
as a midget. I got invited to play for a team in my town. I
find that the boys team tend to be more fair then the girls
teams. On all the girls teams I've played on it's always
equal time and it should be about skill level.

Hello All!

Not to change the subject about the "girls against boys" thread but... ;-)

I was hoping you could all help me... I'm trying to compile a list of links
for all of the women's teams web pages on my web page. If you go to
www.goaliegirl.com (go into GoalieGirl's Crease) and click on Hockey Links
you will see that I've spent a LOT of time getting the list that I have. I
think I've just about exhausted all of my resources for finding pages...
Anyway, if you or anyone you know has put up a web page for their team send
me the link and I'll add it!!

Also, I've only been working on the page in my spare time for a few weeks so
it's still pretty much lacking in content but I do add something every few
days... If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it if you let me
know!

One more thing, my team manager sent out an e-mail letting everyone know
that our team is in need of a goalie (Team Michigan Herricanes), I'm the
goalie for our team and I'm going to be moving to Canada a few months after
the season starts and we DO still need another goalie -- so if ANYone in the
Detroit area is interested you can e-mail me for that as well!

Please reply to email@hidden, thanks!

It would be more correct to say that *you prefer* to play on a competitive
team which does not have equal playing time. You need to find teams that
fit with *your* principles and preferences.

That is a good question to ask, when you're trying to find out whether a
team or organization fits what you're looking for. In the girls' hockey
association where I'm one of the organizers, we could tell you right away
that we are committed to equal ice time for all players in all games
(including playoffs and tournaments), and we could also probably give you
several suggestions for girls' high school, Midget, and Intermediate teams
where you could find the kind of competitive environment you're looking for.

Have a good season,

Louise
