As a materials engineer, I'm glad to see that lots of people told you it
was a bad idea to paint helmets. The person who said that he had painted a
helmet and "nothing happened to the structure of the plastic" - I'd be
really skeptical about this claim. Unless the person had access to some
pretty sophisticated electron-microscope equipment, he can't know what
effect the painting was having on the structure of the plastic.

But as a hockey organizer who tries to keep hockey reasonably priced, I'm
really surprised that no-one has asked you why your daughter "needs" a
different colour of helmet. Shouldn't you be pointing out to your team
organizers that it's inappropriate to require families to spend unnecessary
money on matching equipment? Shoudn't you be setting an example for your
daughter of valuing safety and frugality over fashion? Even if your family
has the money for this, wouldn't it make it even harder for poor kids to
play on this team?

Hello,
I am a USA Hockey referee and in the manual it is illegal to play a USA
Hockey game with a painted helmet. Technically, a referee should not let a
player play in a game with a helmet that has been painted. Most refs,
however, will probably just inform the coach that the player should get a new
helmet. If a coach on the opposing team brings it to the attention of the
referee, than that player cannot play.

Thanks for the advice from Louise and all others on this list. Actually
this turned out to be a really hot topic and I hope it has been as valuable
for all the list watchers as it has been for me.
My daughter is playing for her high school team (boys team, another topic
for another time) this year and they are required to have uniform colors.
My daughter's Bauer 5000 black helmet, that she used for half of last year,
needs to be royal blue. The school has helmets, however they are not Bauer
5000 quality.
My original thought was, what harm can painting be, versus paying another
$90 for a new helmet. Well, you know what they say about a little
knowledge...
Someone also mentioned taping as an alternative. I didn't hear any
negitive responses to that idea, although you would have to be very skilled
to make that look presentable.
I think it's clear after the discussion that buying a new helmet is the
ONLY sensible thing to do. That it what I plan to do at this point. Once
again, thanks to everyboby who responded.

Hey Donald, when you want to start the "girls playing on a boy's high school
team" thread, I'll be happy to respond with my 2c.
