Hi! I just returned from a gathering in NYC, where I met an old (!)
classmate - she expressed great interest in getting her 7-year-old daughter
into ice hockey. She lives in the Seattle area and knows of no programs for
young girls.

Can anyone help out there? I will forward any info I receive, and let her
know about this list...

Thanks in advance - you can reply to me directly, or to the list for
everyone's edification!

Hi June -

Seattle has a program for beginners ages 5-8 that is coed. It is the
Seattle Junior Hockey Association Beginner Program. I was an assistant
coach this year, and I had so much fun -- I highly recommend it. And
there were quite a few girls this year, which I was glad to see. But
tell your friend to hurry up and register her daughter, because once she
turns 9 she has to join a team (I think) and the beginner program would
be a shame to miss if she's never played before.

I don't know of any all-girls teams until age 11. But everything before
then is coed, so there are plenty of opportunities. Tell your friend to
contact me if she has questions.

- -Madeleine Oldham, Vice President, Seattle Women's Hockey Club
