Hello there,

I have been largely lurking here in sunny FL, but now I need to brag.

My daughter, age 6 just "graduated" to mites from mini-mites in a regular
youth hockey program. Her daddy is her coach. He had one girl on his team
already (the only one in mites at the time) and now my daughter and one
other little girl are moving up from minimites and he "drafted" both of
them. So now the TBSA Mite Tornadoes have 3 girls. Pretty neat. My
husband says he will let them skate together sometimes to make the "Femme
Fatale" line. Not bad for a state with only three girls teams in the
state and only a handful that skate at our rink!!

My daughter had 3 girls on her mini-mite team, then 2 on the team each year
at the squirt level. I think that one of the best things that the coachs
did was let the girls be skaters rather than girl skaters. A femme fatale
line sounds cute, but it gives the other kids a reason to center the girls
out. After all, the adults can center them out, why can't we? So let the
girls skate where they do the best job they can. They are hockey players
first, girls second.

Good luck. Hope you enjoy many years of hockey.

RE: 10 & under and girls teams

We have a 10& under team, although we are in the first year and have
absolutely NO ice time except for games. The girls had a good first season
- -- good meaning they are still having fun and enjoying the game. I am
hopeful that we will have two "house league" teams next year... 10&under and
12& under -- and one travel team at Squirt level. As of right now, I don't
forsee a PeeWee level team forming, since the two or three girls that could
play are playing for the CYA or TI girls teams. Our level is a bit below
that! But we're working hard on it and trying desperately to get ice time at
our local rink. However, we are not very competitive right now due to the
fact that I take any girl who wants to play.... thus, we have some good
players and some not so good. We are definitely not able to compete with
other teams such as Minnesota (as you know, Jim.... from our spring league).
But perhaps after a few years of getting the program together and getting
support from the community and the Hockey Club, we will be able to put
together a team to compete at your level. There are some other teams around
the Chicago area that are in our "boat"... and I would think that after a
few developmental seasons, would be able to do the same. Don't lose faith!

Jennie,

I wouldn't feel too bad about the tie. Seeing as how I was playing on the
other team in that game, I can honestly say that it was goal-tending that
was the biggest difference in the game, not a team let down. Our team did
pick it up in the third period (thanks in part to having our 3rd defensemen
show up so we could actually rest!) but 10 of the 12 goals scored in the
game were against one goalie. I really didn't see any let down by your
team at all.

Congrats on your first goal - even if it was against us :)

Shawn

PS: For those of you who are unfamiliar with the league, it's very small.
We have 4 teams of approximately 8 players/team. We don't generally have
'real' goalies, our goal tenders are volunteers from the team not currently
playing. They put on the pads and try and stop what they can with no
training whatsoever. To make things fair for both teams, the goalies
switch teams half way through the game so each team has equal time shooting
on each goalie.
