Just to add to the discussion regarding quality vs. quantity.
When you have a tournament this large over a weekend, you tend to compromise
quality.
This would be in terms of:
- -quality of officials. There are only so many referees out there who women's
hockey on a regular basis. A tournament this size has to utilize referees
from the OMHA (boys association), who do very few female games. I hope we
all agree that there is a difference between the two games. We see these
OMHA refs making bad calls, especially in the contact part of the game.
- -time of games. When you have to run so many games, you tend to have some
bad times. Playing hockey at 7:00 am is not fair to anyone. The extra hour
(for an 8:00 am start), in my opinion makes a big difference.

Suggestion, run the tournament over a couple of weekends as opposed to one.
Then you require only half the refs and half the ice for a particular weekend.

Enjoy.

But that, unfortunately, makes it nearly impossible for teams more than a couple
hours drive away to be in the tournament - which would then solve the problem of
too many teams, but I don't think that's what you meant! :)

I just finished reading Mary Turco's new book "Crashing The Net. The U.S.
Women's Olympic Ice Hockey Team and the Road to Gold". It was great and I
recommend it to any hockey or women's sports fan, player or coach. It gives
an up close and personal look at the first U.S. Women's Olympic Ice Hockey
Team and their "unforgettable journey to becoming gold medal winners". I was
most impressed by the psychological preparation made by these 20 athletes and
their coach and after reading this, I believe that is what gave them "the
edge" they needed to defeat an equally talented team. The book is available
from amazon.com.

Subject: wih - approach the coach?

While in the locker room getting ready for a game, I realized that I forgot
my pants! Knowing that I could not play in a game wihtout this protective
gear, I went to my coach (this was about 10 minutes before game time) told
him that I forgot my pants. His respone "So. What do you want ME to do
about it?"

OK, my timing may have been a little bit off, he was having a conversation
with somebody, but I think a more appropriate answer would have been, "I'm in
the middle of a conversation right now. If you give me a minute, I will try
to help you figure something out."

The coach thinks I am way out of line for this. I think he is outta his mind
- - it is before game time, and there is a player who may not be able to play
in the game. If you can;t go the coach for soemthing like this, what CAN you
go to him for? Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.
