Are neck protectors part of the regulation equipement or just suggested in
youth hockey? We got to a game on Saturday, and all the girls were upset
because they were told they needed them, and 4 did not have them. Since
teenage girls travel without money and without parents, I bought them.
Then, one of the refs said that we didn't need them after all. What is the
story? These are girls, under 19.

I play for the Sylvania Maple Leafs, a girls midget
team in Ohio. We are REQUIRED to wear them, even in
practice.

For Immediate Release	October 18, 1998

SCHOLZ, HEGLAND SELECTED AS GOPHER WOMENÍS HOCKEY CAPTAINS

Sophomore Kris Scholz and senior Amber Hegland have been selected by their
teammates as captains for the Minnesota womenÍs hockey team for the 1998-99
season.
Scholz, a Stillwater, Minn., native, served as an assistant captain during the
GophersÍ inaugural season last year and led the Gophers in assists with 34 to
rank third nationally. Her 49 points ranked eighth in the country.
A Kathleen C. Ridder Scholarship winner, Scholz was named the Minnesota Women's
Athletics Athlete of the Month for December. She also scored seven goals and 20
points while ending the regular season with a 10-game point-scoring streak.
Hegland, the team's lone senior this year, is in her first season of hockey
after spending four seasons with the Gopher softball team, where she also served
as a team captain.
In 1994, Hegland became the first female to play and score a point in the
Minnesota BoysÍ State High School Hockey Tournament while playing for
Farmington.
A versatile performer on the softball field, she earned second-team All-Big Ten
honors four times at four different positions and is the only player in school
history to play all nine positions in the field during her career. She holds
five school records and led the Gophers to the regional final last year where
they lost to eventual national champion Fresno State. During her career, Hegland
did not miss a game, starting in all 240 games she played.
	A four-time all-region honoree who earned second-team All-America honors in
1996, Hegland was a third-team academic All-American in 1998. She also played
professional softball this summer with the Georgia Pride of the Womens
Professional Fastpitch league.
"Kris went through a lot as an assistant captain last year," Minnesota coach
Laura Halldorson said. "She led the team through captainsÍ practices this year
and I think it says a lot about how she has handled herself that she has gained
that kind of respect.
"Amber's experience, having been a college student-athlete for four years, has
prepared her well to be a leader on this team. She doesn't have the most hockey
experience on our team but she knows what it takes to be a successful
student-athlete and has a lot to offer.
ñI'm looking forward to working with them because they are both intelligent,
caring people who will do all they can for the good of the program. They both
work hard every day in practice and they're both team players."
Minnesota opens its second season, Friday, Oct. 30, at Minnesota State-Mankato
and begins its home schedule, Thursday, Nov. 5, by hosting Harvard in the
opening game of the All-American East-West Challenge.

USA Hockey does not have a rule requiring neck guards. Some state
organizations could have that rule, or even local organizations. But, as I
said earlier, USA Hockey does not require that players wear neck guards. I
just looked at the Rule Book for USA Hockey, and they did not even mention it
as a recommended, but not required piece of equipment. They are only
recommended for goalies, but not required. The rules for equipment are
listed under 303 and 304.

I don't the answer to the question "Is it a rule to wear them" but...

One of the women (senior) in my house league caught a puck in her neck last
week. She had trouble breathing, then she started spitting up blood.
By the time they got her to the hospital, they had to do emergency surgery
or she would have suffocated from the swelling in her trachia.

Needless to say, many of the women in my league are looking into neck
protectors.
