The USA Women's Olympic Team will be in attendance at the Annual Congress of USA Hockey in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this weekend, June 12-14.  They will breakfast with the USA Girls/Womens Committee and be honored during the weekend at various functions.

Bemidji State Names Women's Ice Hockey Coach 

Tuesday, June 9, 1998

BEMIDJI--Bemidji State University announced today the hiring of Ruthann Cantile 
as the head women's ice hockey coach.

Cantile (pronounced can-TILE) founded the Western Michigan University women's 
ice hockey club program in 1996 and guided the team to a 28-2-1 record in just 
its second season, capturing the club national championship in Lake Placid, 
N.Y., last winter. Western Michigan's women's club team upended the two-time 
defending club champion to win the title. 

"This is a tremendous opportunity," said Cantile. "I'm delighted to be a part of
the developing stages of women's ice hockey at Bemidji State. The men's program 
has obviously been very successful over the years, and I am looking forward to 
the challenge of building a successful Division I women's program." 

A 1997 graduate of Western Michigan University, Cantile currently serves on the 
board of directors for the Central Collegiate Women's Hockey Association, and 
was the head coach of the Western Michigan University Women's Ice Hockey Club 
from 1996-98. 

"Ruthann (Cantile) brings her all-encompassing commitment to the game, and the 
fire and resolution so essential to lead and develop an emerging Division I 
hockey program," said R.H. "Bob" Peters, BSU head men's ice hockey coach and 
athletic director for hockey. 

"This is a new era for women's collegiate hockey and it is our intention to form
a bond with each community that sponsors girl's and women's hockey in the state 
of Minnesota." 

Bemidji State University announced in January that it will start a varsity 
women's ice hockey program at the school, and a limited schedule is planned for 
the 1998-99 season. The Beavers will join a field of over 40 intercollegiate 
women's varsity ice hockey programs which have emerged in the last five years 
across the country.
