Subject: Introduction

Hi! I am also new to the list. I live in Blacksburg VA, and women's
hockey is an extremely new thing in my area. In fact, we are in the
process of putting together the first ever "all-women's" team in the
Roanoke Valley. (Roanoke VA is where the Ice Station is which is the only
rink in SW VA that I am aware of. Some of the women who will be on the
team used to travel to North Carolina to play before they built our rink or
played at the Civic Center that the Roanoke Express {ECHL} use during their
season.) Unfortunately, women's interest in playing hockey in my area is
still not as enthusiastic as I'd like, but it is continuing to grow. For
the past few months, we have had a women's hockey class where about 20
women are learning the game from Pierre Paiement (retired GM for the
Roanoke Express who played for the Roanoke-Valley Rebels {EHL} when they
won the championship in 73.)

Since those classes began in early April, they have had News channel 10 do
a story on us, and News channel 13 did one on our class earlier this week
which is airing tonight. The Roanoke Times also did a story on us which
you can read on my website at
http://www.angelfire.com/va/InThePenaltyBox/article12.html The article
is pretty funny, though a couple of us were slightly mis-quoted... I think
everyone knows that it would be awesome if we could buy full gear at only
$350... I spent $75 alone on the jersey in the photo and slightly over
$200 on my sticks. But if anyone knows where I can get all my pads for
about $75, let me know, I need to upgrade! (just kidding!) The photo on
the page is of Pierre and I demonstrating a stick handling drill to the
class. Shortly after that article ran in our paper, I was asked by USA
hockey to be the contact person for adult women's hockey in Roanoke (which
is governed by the mid-Atlantic region of USA hockey).

In closing, I would like to invite everyone to give me any suggestions /
comments on the birth of our team. My ears are open, and I would like to
hear any stories about problems or accomplishments made by anyone who has
been at this same situation at some point... The more I can learn, the
better I will be able to help the growth of women's hockey in SW VA. I
look forward to talking to you all!

Take care!

(And by the way - I have also found the 'Jill' to be very uncomfortable,
the Hockeyjoc for Women is a much better way to go! Pierre owns the
pro-shop that is in our Ice Station and he didn't carry women's equipment
until recently... But I am partial to the men's equipment. I haven't seen
much of a difference between the two (except for the shoulder/chest pads)
but since I am rather small anyway, I am comfortable in men's pads...
Another difference I have seen is that women's equipment is a bit more
expensive. One of the women I play with has some women's pads that her
brother ordered for her from a catalog, but he paid twice as much for the
pants than what I paid for mine. And mine have more padding in them... I
forgot who it was who said it, but he was right - all you have to do is go
into your local equipment shop and request they order you some women's
equipment or even that they start to carry women's equipment. If you can
try it on before you buy it, you'd be better off. The women's equipment is
cut differently and therefore fits a little differently.)

Take it from an OLD goalie (40) - if you get clocked in the pubic bone and
bruise or fracture it, you will be out of action for months - I've seen it
happen.

In fact, I once took a slapper on the pubic bone (wearing the Jill) from a
guy and got the wind knocked out of me from the pain!!!! Thank god it
subsided quickly enough to continue play.

If you are a V-style (butterfly) goaltender I wouldn't go on the ice without
it, period.

And I'm sure that "out of action" is referring to more than hockey!!! :-)

Ouch! This was really funny! Painful, but funny. Hope this gives you a
little redemption for Itech naming the Jill after you Jill...I understand
your pain, though I do enjoy wearing Liz Clairborne clothes. The tags say
'Liz Wear' and for some reason I just buy them. :-)

best -

Subject: Winter Camps

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go to any hockey camps this summer. I
actually just came back from visiting a few colleges, looking into their
hockey programs, talking to some coaches... I'm getting so excited!! It turns
out that I might be out in Colorado this winter break- my friend's mom is
moving there next week and I recieved an invitation for Christmas time...and
since this summer was a bust as far as camps go, I was thinking that I could
attend one while I'm out there. I would be in the Denver area somewhere
between Dec 20 and Jan 2. If anyone has any info about anything thats going
on during that time frame(residential or day camps, somewhere in the Denver
vecinity), or any web sites I could go to (most of them so far are still
posting summer stuff), I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much!
