I think the key here is why do only 10% of those women (want?) to
participate. I believe studies have shown that if opportunities for women
to particpate are available, the participation level goes up. Typically
there are more opportunities available on the male side and therefore more
men are particpating in sports. Leveling that out is the intent of
legislation like Title IX.
Unfortunately, "splitting the athletic budget 50/50" can be painful to
those used to having more than their share. But certainly no more painful
than the suffering of those who endured decades of gender bias.

I would hope the access is not the same, I would hope women would be pushing
for their own facilities. No matter how equal women want to be to men or vice
versa the fact is no two men are equal this was an oversite in LEGISLATION. Do
you think there is an equal to Dominik Hasek? Not a chance their is either
someone better or lacking a few skills in comparison to him. Search for your
own domain. Not to say women's and men's hockey can't play in the same
building but look at this list it doesn't say men and women in hockey, someone
made the effort to make it women-in-hockey (thanks Chuq).

As for scolarships of this instead of trying to go to schools and ask for
scolarships based upon being a female hockey player why can't women go to the
hundreds of scolarship organizations built specifically for them and put the
hockey twist to them who knows maybe all the org. could ban together to come
up with a new one with scolarships for hockey only.

Every PERSON on this planet has the ability to play professional sports if
they want to I am 24 years old and still have not given up on playing in the
NHL, because it doesn't matter who you arer it only matters who YOU are.

My question is: Why are women trying to compare themselves to men and trying
to play catch up?

Take everything in stride and make your own way if you keep saying "Well the
guys have this and the guys have that." you will keep agetting the same
response.

Doesn't it make more sense to get a woman on the administrative team and
tell her "We need these things in a seperate facility because as women we
require them to try to be as competetive as possible based upon what we have
learned we need in this subject."

How about what it feels like to be. Black,White, Male, Female, a Kid, This
is not the point IO am a man I don't want to know what it feels like to be a
woman, I don't want to know what it feels like to be anything but me I'm not
trying to understand your trials and tribulations nor do I expect that from
you this is not what this is about it is about who is best for the job and if
this is so hard for everyone to figure out then why don't we all contact our
respective leagues and ask them to require all coaches register with their
coaching cards (requirement) ready. I've seen the coaching classes for
different levels and they are reqiured in some leagues.

The only thing I see as a problem with this is then we'll be having a
discussion on whether or not women are being discriminated agaiin the coaching
classes won't we (for those of you who can't figure things out on their own
this message was written in one breath with  the last paragraph {this one}
having the upmost sarcasm I can possibly muster!)

I haven't really been keeping totally up with this discussion about the
coaching and the discrimination. But I've been keeping up enough to put in my
little opinion or whatever.
I've only been playing for a little over 2 years now. The first year (6
game outdoor rec league) there was one other girl on my team, we were the only
2 in the league. None of the guys really talked to me, they talked to the
other girl, but I'm kinda quiet anyways. Plus since it was an 7th-10th grade
league, I was with kids mostly from 7th or 8th grade, when I was in a
completely different school so there wasn't much to relate to. But there was
never really a problem, and nobody really picked on me or made fun of me.
The 2nd year(a 10 game outdoor rec league) I was the only girl in the
league, no problems there, and the guys actually talked to me.
Now I'm in an indoor league, and theres another girl on my team, and theres
one other girl in the league. Only 4 of us showed up for our game today. Me
the other girl, our goalie and one other guy. Oh and another guy showed up
with 10 minutes left. So we were shorthanded for most of the game, usually I
think we're supposed to forfeit, but we didin't. But anyways, my mom was
telling me that one of our player's moms, said that her son said he didn't
talk to the girls. Which I though was kinda odd. Sure I don't talk much in the
first place, but he specifically said he doesn't talk to the girls on his
team, which he doesn't much. An occasional good job, here and there (only
since there were 3 of us today) And in this league I have noticed a couple
cheap shots pulled on me, and the other girl. My parents and one of the other
parents of one of my teammates say I need to be more aggressive. So, I'm not
sure what to think.
About the coaching thing thats being discussed. Sure I can see a womens
team wanting a female coach, but it really shouldn't matter. Ben Smith is a
perfectly (well not perfectly) good coach. Whoever does the job right should
have the job. My coach doesn't really coach much at all, hes showed up for 3
of our 5 games, so far. And the 1st game he had to keep score. When he
actually is on the bench, he just says lines. Today he said a couple things,
just some hints on how to save our energy since we didn't have a full line of
players. Even though we only had the 4 players, untill the end. We still did
better than any of our other games when we actually have a full line (we
haven't had 2 full lines yet though) And I had more fun too, even though I did
play a full 50 minutes. Our team (well that showed up) actually looked like a
team in this game. But anyways I'll shutup since this didn't totally stay on
topic. Oh well
