Andria,

I agree with you 100%. I am a youth coach and much of the time, I would
almost rather be watching the youths play than the Pros. Don't get me wrong,
I do enjoy highly skilled hockey, but I love the game itself enough to be able
to appreciate it on all it's levels. The kids do the best they can with their
size and speed, same thing with the woman and the Pros, it's all about effort.

For all US list members. The CBS broadcast lineup is at the below link. It
states the gold medal game WILL be shown at 4am EST on Feb. 17.

There are also a few other interesting things throughout the CBS site so
look around a bit! :-)

Just a little more info. I only started reffing this year, but have
plenty of more senior ref friends (who also play) and would totally agree
with Roger's answer to Bec. I've seen some pretty slight guys break-up some
significant fights. But like anything else- it does come down to respect,
being taken seriously, and staying in control.

Oh, for the info - finally ;^) In the last USAH Ref publication,
there were several women listed as having completed the national training
camps - one or two to the level necessary to do the pros as refs, and a few
as linesmen. It listed those going to the Olympics; what I recall is at
least 1 woman ref and a few women as linesmen. Perhaps the Nagano
experience will provide them the marketability to go on - at least into the
minors. If anyone wants the specifics (who, etc.) contact me, and I'll look
for my hidden-in-the-hockey-household-mess copy of the ref mag.

So, what did everybody make of the NFB documentary "The Game of Her Life"?

I loved it and taped it for posterity. Though any documentary on hockey with
not a single curse to be heard could be a little suspicious, this was no
whitewashed, bathed in a rosy glow homage to "our girls".

The scene early on with Manon Rheaume getting cut and Shannon Miller in the
background, glowering, halfway up a staircase (theoretically out of camera
range) was remarkable. It was threatening in a very creepy way and I never
overcame that feeling about the Team Canada coach. Every smile seemed to
disguise the imminent strike of a rattlesnake.

It's hard to imagine that we could care about the men's "dream team" the way
we care about the women's side. Imagine the cardboard-cutout reactions of
male professionals (who after all have huge salaries and other potential
glories to fall back on) to the joys and disappointments that these women
had, and shared with the documentary crew. I only hope Angela, Letendre et
al can bring themselves to watch the Olympics...if they can spare the time
from their day jobs...:(

I hope young female players across the country get copies of this tape. It's
inspirational, sad and revelatory at the same time.

For those in the States, perhaps the National Film Board has copies for
sale. Their website can be found at www.nfb.ca .

Hi All:

Just called the NFB on this excellent women's hockey documentary.

They tell me it will be available for purchase in March, for $19.95 (Can.)
plus tax. Unsure about American availability (the NFB has an office in NY
for American orders). Anyway, the number to call is 1-800-267-7710.

The on-line description of the film, producer, director, etc. can be found
at www.nfb.ca/teamcanada/ .

I came away from watching it with a very sick feeling. Shannon Miller is an idiot. She totally hammed it up for the cameras and you're right she is very much like a rattlesnake waiting to strike. I actually think she enjoyed cutting those girls. She likes confrontation and she likes attention. I am not impressed with her as a coach either. What exactly is her record with Team Canada since taking over? I would be interested to know. Does anyone out there have the statistics on that? I also have a few of my own theories as to why the team is not playing as well as it did when they only got together for a few weeks to prepare for these competitions. Isolating these women from their everyday life has had a bad effect with some of the players. Four months of intense workouts on the ice, stress about making the team, having to be "up" all the time (attitude is something they look at) and being "together" all the time has to take it's toll. All the constant "rah rah" stuff has to be !
a bit much after a while too. In everyone's life their has to be a balance. I feel if you concentrate solely on one thing for too long you will become complacent and lose focus. Also has anyone looked at these women lately? They all look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. They aren't used to playing carrying all that extra weight around whether it's muscle or not. Just ask Eric Lindros or Doug Gilmour how damaging it was to their production to have pumped up too much. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying they shouldn't work out and shouldn't practice intensley to prepare for the Olympics. I'm just saying don't go overboard and start doing things just for the sake of doing them. Just because it's the Olympics doesn't mean you have to now change everything that worked for you in the past. Sorry for being so long winded.

I would like to know how you can be "loyal" to Cassie Campbell. She has played just awful in the 3 or 4 games that I have watched. I have seen her play in Toronto with her Club team many times and she is a very competent player but her faults are showing up now as I knew they would. Why isn't anyone saying the truth about how Canada has been playing basically since the last worlds which is God awful. The wins they do have against the US have been due to luck or exceptional goaltending like this past Friday night in Vancouver. I think some of us are in denial.
