(Following on the Cammi theme...)

I just heard from my uncle (he's a video color editor in Los Angeles)
that he's working on an AT&T commercial featuring Cammi Granato and her
family that will be aired during the olympics. It's supposed to be dual
themed - the close family keeps in touch over the phone, and lots of
road travel means lots of long distance calls. He said that the spot has
very high production values (whatever that means!) and that his client
said Cammi was great to work with. I'd expect nothing else!

Subject: Women's Hockey Documentary on CBC Friday evening

Here is some information from someone who works at CBC. This documentary
is different than the "The Game of Her Life" special, which will be shown
at 2:30 pm EST on Sun Jan 18:

We just completed a documentary on women's hockey with a lot of
coverage of the Olympic team and a look at the possibility of the
sport going pro (to name a few themes). Anyway, just wanted to let
you know and also ask if you'd mind posting it on the hockey list.
  I'm no longer a subscriber.

Let me know what you think if you get a chance to see it. It'll be on
Friday night at 9:30 on Newsworld and 10:30 on CBC.

I know they filmed the University of Toronto women at practice last
night. In fact, the reporter (Hanna Gardiner?) was talking with her
back to the practice, and the Zamboni door open, and the puck deflected
off the cross bar and hit her in the back of the head, knocking her to
the ground for a while! It probably won't be on TV, but perhaps it
will make a blooper tape somewhere! :-)

Not being able to get CBC in Philadelphia, I tried to get the video of
The Game of Her Life from the National Film Board.
It will not be ready for sale for another few weeks. It is, however, a
bargain at $19.95 CDN, about

$13 US.

Here is a reply that I sent to the rec.sport.hockey newsgroup.
Feel free to follow up on it in this mailing list as well.

>Just a topic to throw out to everyone. Do you think women
>can make it in the NHL?

I'd have to agree that the physical differences between men and women
are too great for women to play in the NHL as forward or defense. A
female goalie might be able to make it into the NHL because size and
strength are not as important. The average size for women on the
Canadian women's national team is around 5'6" and 140 pounds. And even
that is smaller than Fleury (who is definitely the exception, rather
than the norm).

I think it would be more realistic to start a professional league that
is only for women as they have done for women's basketball.

I've played for Team Canada (the women that is) in the past, so I think
I have seen enough women's hockey to be able to answer your question
with some authority.

I should also add that although women may not be able to play in the
NHL, that doesn't take away from the women's game. At the highest
level, it is a remarkable game of hockey skill and finesse.

What about female refs? I've seen lots of men argue that it would be
impossible for a woman to be an NHL ref, but this doesn't make sense to
me. Although the best female hockey players don't skate as fast as the best
male hockey players, surely a woman could skate well enough- you don't
have to be Pavel Bure to be a ref. [This is not to say that there are women
*now* who are qualified to be NHL refs. I expect there are not. It may be
that lower levels discriminate against women who are trying to become refs.
This has nothing to do with whether some women could do the job if they got
the opportunities.]

Linesmen are a different story. I don't know how well women would do
breaking up fights. On the other hand, some women are police officers
and security guards, so maybe technique beats out size here.

Linesmen might be a different story, because of breaking up fight

Several people from the list have emailed me asking what is TSN in
reference to the Canada vs. US game that is to be broadcasted tonight on
it.

TSN is The Sports Network. It is Canada's version of ESPN. In my opinion,
they have been very supportive of women's hockey. The game tonight has
been advertised alot.

CBC is the Canadian Broadcast Corporation. It is one of our national
stations which will air the Canadian Women's Olympic Hockey Team
documentary this weekend.

Sorry to disappoint the Americans on the list :( hopefully you can get it
on a satellite dish.
