Subject: Final thoughts on the Olympics

Well I was pleased to see the entire hockey game this afternoon, even if it was 5 days after the
fact. It seems that CBS has discovered their oversight and suddenly (it took the men's loss and
bad behavior to bring the women to the forefront) give the women the attention they deserved.
Does anyone else think this was too little, too late? Does this make our opinion of CBS's
coverage improve? I don't think so.

However, I was very pleased with the interviews and focus that they and other medias are now
paying women's hockey. Each time I see them discussing the merits of the team and all their
accomplishments, I was very proud of all the girls/women that play the sport and who are the
real winners from the Olympics.

Was anyone else wondering what that half hour story about a WWII POW had to do with the Winter
Olympics? It was a nice story, but what the heck did it have to do with anything? The closest
connection was the guy was a runner in the Summer Olympics and was interned in a camp near
Nagano during the war. But a half hour long????? I thought someone had changed the channel
when I wasn't looking. Boy, CBS must really be hurting for any story. My final grade for
CBS...D-, it would have been an F, if not for them replaying the game today. They started out
ok, but went steadly downhill from there.

The American men...
Well it seems that they are not so bad after all, I guess we can blame Wilson for the lack of
support, and thank the two who did come to the game against orders. With the Czech's winning
the gold, it doesn't seem such a dishonor for them to have lost in the semi's to them. Canada
and Russia met the same fate, we were just the first to run into the wall call Hasek. If the
men can now look back in perspective, maybe they can learn something from the whole experience,
like humility. Only time will tell who the juveniles were that thrashed the rooms. Too bad
that Japan does not practice caning for vandalism like Singapore does! 8-)

Well I guess next time at the grocery store I will have to pick up a box of Wheaties.

The cynic in me sees this as simply implying CBS could sell the
advertising for the broadcast (but the good news is the advertisers saw
value in it). The ultimate cynic in me remembers that CBS is *way
under* their advertising guarantees for the Olympics, and wonders
whether the whole broadcast was used as make-good spots for their
advertisers....

Don't believe CBS did this out of the good of their hearts, or because
they got 1,000 letters of complaint.... Unfortunately, if you do,
you'll end up disapointed.

Sorry Chuq,
I heard on the business report that CBS did not get the market share that
they promised, and they were giving time away to cheer up their big
advertisers.

I agree with you there. I'm a guy and agree that women's sports are better
than mens. Great job on your expressing your feelings.

You've just go to ingnore people like this who obviously don't have a clue. I
play the men's and women's game and in my own experience, more bodies are left
lying on the ice in the women's game then in the mens! My Mom has a harder
time watching the women's games that I play in than the men's because of the
level of aggression. Obviously that guy is clueless as to what he is talking
about.

well, about those evaluation camps...lets just say they were alot like the
judging in the olympic ice dancing, the winners were chosen long before
anybody hit the ice. those with a hope of making the national team were
pretty much selected before any evaluation camps team was picked ages
back. if the evaluation camps had been at all honest and fair, i know of
a number of players that should have had a shot at a real tryout.
the fix was in as far as i am concerned,

But can you talk in it?! I've got one I wear when I rollerblade on
half-pipes, and no one can understand me when I talk with it in. My
10-yo daughter has a mouthguard that she loves (in fact, she wears it
around the house sometimes - it's still new and she thinks it's cool)
and she has no problem talking around it.

Unfortunately, I think the dental guarantee only covers officially-coached
sports - not aggressive skating. I hope I never need the guarantee!

I went in the summer of 1996 and loved it. (Long Beach, CA) It was very
worthwhile. The coaches were great and a few of the women from the
Olympic team were there. It was a good combination of on and off ice
instruction. I was tired, but never felt better in my life; not to mention
my play improved so that my male teammates really noticed a difference.
The best part about a good camp is that it improves confidence.

Like the Americans weren't. I'm too old to think that anything is on the
up and up. But after reviewing the video, the games were fantastic. You
have to be Scrouge to pick holes in it. Either team could have won on any
given day. Best hockey I have seen.

When I started playing hockey (as an adult), I got massive headaches just
from the exertion, even though I was in fairly decent shape. That went away
after a few months. So try just giving it some time.

I agree with the hydration comments from Chuq though.

I agree that lots of water is the best thing when you're playing.

I played the two least-inspired games of my short hockey career
recently. Before each of them I drank one beer (I'm a slow learner).
I will NEVER AGAIN drink beer before playing - I'll just save it
for after. :>)
..................................................

The Wheaties thing: I read in the San Diego Union this morning
that NCAA rules did not allow 5 members of the US Women's Hockey
team (each of whom still have NCAA eligibility) to appear on the
Wheaties box. What a shame for them!! I guess rules are rules
but surely they could have made an exception (?)

While I watched the US bench erupt in hugs, high fives, cheers, tears and
jumps as they scored the empty netter to seal the win I notice Ben Smith
standing behind the bench looking down at his note pad.

Personally, I would have liked to see him a bit more excited than that.
Maybe he was too choked up to react but I don't know?? Most people would
have at least cheered a bit. And in his interview I notice he was a red in
the face and then went on to thank all these past coaches and buddies of
his... yeah, sure, maybe he felt that they got him there but what about the
players, his staff, etc?

In my opinion it wouldn't have been "narrow" or "gloating," just natural,
for at least some celebration.... for his team *and* for women's hockey.

Tell jerks like the one who e-mailed you to look at the final score:

US Women: Gold Medal
US Men (some of them): Under investigation for vandalism

Actually, you're probably better off ignoring such negative comments. Jerks
like that are just trying to get a reaction out of you. Don't give them the
satisfaction.
