For anyone who cares and hasn't heard the score yet, Apple Valley defeated
Hibbing, 1-0 , in overtime play at the coliseum at the MN State fairgrounds
on Sat Feb 20.
A junior (I forgot her name) scored at 1:25 into overtime to give Apple
Valley its second State Championship. They won in 1995. Hibbing won the
8-team tournament in 1997.

Coach Crowe at Dartmouth was the men's coach for years and I believe that their record during 
those years were excellent.  He switched over to the women's program and said he would never go 
back.  Women need GOOD coaches, PERIOD!  Either sex should be welcome.

Granato Will Carry U.S. Flag
At Closing Ceremony

 

NAGANO, Japan (February 21, 1998) - Cammi Granato will carry her second U.S.
flag of the Olympics on Sunday. Granato, a forward on the women's hockey team,
will serve as flag bearer for the U.S. team during the closing ceremony of the
Nagano Games. 


Granato was picked Saturday (Friday night ET) in a vote by the U.S. team
captains of the eight Olympic winter sports. 

I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would receive such an honor,"
said Granato, of Downers Grove, Ill. "I am really living out all of my dreams,
and the whole Olympic experience has been the most amazing thing that has ever
happened in my life." 

Granato and her teammates beat Canada, 3-1, to win the first Olympic gold
medal in women's hockey. The United States was 6-0 in the tournament. 

Granato, 26, is the all-time leading scorer in the USA Hockey women's national
team program.

Subject: Mouthguards

Does anyone know of a way to get a fitted or semi-fitted mouthguard?  
I have a fitted one that I was able to get from an orthodontist, but it's
worn out.  A local dentist quoted me $385 to make one, which seems a
little high considering that the last one cost $35.  

I've tried the cheap plastic ones, but well, they felt pretty cheap.
What I'm hoping for is a mail order deal where you make an impression
(bit a wax sheet, etc) and send it back.  A little while later, the
postal gods deliver a mouthguard.  

Any suggestions?

The commercials on CBS during the Gold Men's game, and the anchorwoman
afterwards, say that the Women's Gold Medal game will be repeated "in it's
entirety" at 3:30pm ET on Sunday.  She did say "entirety". Blockbuster
better have lots of blank tapes for sale!

Wouldn't we all love to just be chosen to go to the Olympics.  I am damn proud of
all of them (and a little envious).  Medal or not they represent the best that country
had to offer.  Canadian or American who cares..they were Olympians.

I'm sorry if I was wrong in saying that the U.S. men's team did not show
support for the U.S. women.  When I watched the game on tv and they said
something along the lines of the Canadain Men's team being there to show
support for their women's team and said nothing about the U.S. men, I
assumed that they did not care to even show up.  I did not know that a team
meeting was going on during the women's game.  I'm sure that when they were
in San Jose, support from the men's team was well noticed.  After all,
Cammi Granato's brother plays for the Sharks.

Actually, the entire Granato family except Tony was at the final game.  He had
to go back to San Jose to the mini training camp the NHL held for all non-
Olympians.

Also, Karin Bye helped carry in the sign that said, "Thank you Nagano, see you
in Salt Lake City."  

Quite the time.  Congratulations to all participants!

Does anyone else get a terrible headache the morning after hockey?  I think it
might be dehydration, but I drink a gatorade while I'm playing, and then
another bottle of something after, i.e. water or juice.  This seems like
enough to me.  Anyone have any ideas?

Even though it is a "cheap plastic one", the Shock Doctor mouthgard is great.
(about 19.95 at places like MVP)  After placing it in boiling water for a few
minutes, one molds it to their mouth by pressing it up to the roof of the
mouth and manipulating the soft plastic.  It also comes with a dental
guarantee of $3000-5000.00 if you get tooth injuries.  I have never had a
problem with mine, it stays where it belongs & I can still breathe.

Maybe, maybe not. Are you urinating after the game at all? IMHO, if you
don't have to at least once before you go to sleep, you're probably
dehydrated.

I'd try *another* bottle an hour after the bottle you have after the
game and see if that helps. It's a cheap test, after all... (grin). And
if you're not urinating until the next morning, definitely step up the
fluid during and after the game.

Nothing is better for you than plain water.  I would avoid the gatorade during the game and just 
dump the water in, and more than one bottle.  Save the gatorade/powerade for after the game and 
like Chuq said, more water after that.  Headache is one of the first signs of dehydration.  Few 
people realize that a hangover is really caused by dehydration rather than the effects of alchol.  
So to avoid a hockey hangover or otherwise, keep the water coming.

My son's coach was able to purchase a bunch of Shock Doctors from USA Hockey
for $10 each.  I'm not sure if they are still offering it.  I think there was
a 10 or 20 piece minimum.

YES!!  I call this "Hockey hangover."  

 It is caused (mostly) by dehydration. Drink LOTS of water while playing. Get
one of those HUGE water bottles (32 oz) and make sure you drink most, if not,
all of the bottle while playing.   Drink more after playing too.  The water
goes down much easier if it is room temp, as opposed to cold.

I also try to "fuel up" on liquids during the day, waaaaaaaaaay in advance of
playing.  If I have a game at night, I make sure to drink at least 1-2 quarts
of water during the day, along with the one quart whiel playing, and mroe
after playing.  Oh yes - and avoid carbonated beverages (can cause tummy
aches) & caffeine (causes dehydration.)

Forget the gatorade while playing.  Your body has to work to digest that while
you are playing.  This makes blood go to your stomach, when it should be
circualting & delivering oxygen elsewhere. (It;s the same exact principle as
waiting 1/2 hour after eating to go swimming.)  If you MUST have gatorade,
make sure you have the last of it no more than 1/2 hr before starting to play.
Water does not have to be digested, thereby avoiding this problem altogether.

ALSO:  A teammate suggested that I try taking some vitamins before playing.
Vitamin C and Potassiam.   I do this too.  And I found it has worked for me.

Hello everyone-

I just played in a hockey (floor) tournament Friday night.  Each team
consisted of 4 players and a goalie.  The first team I was on was eliminated
after it's first 2 games,with scores of 1-0 and 2-0 (double elimination).
No one on my team could score, but that's ok.  I was asked to play on the
sponsor's team, so I did.  We made it to the finals without a loss.  In the
finals we played against a team (all male) who had 3 ice hockey players (and
I mean sharp-shooters) on their team.  We lost round one of the finals 2-1,
but since we hadn't lost a game and the other team had we played a second
game.  That game came down to a 1-1 tie, so we went into a shoot-out.  I
somehow stopped all four shots. (Let me tell you, when the crowd starts
chanting your name it is a beautiful feeling!  It makes any struggle worth
it!)  At the same time, no one from my team had scored yet.  Our last
shooter, my teacher, made it in.  We won first place with an offical score
of 1-0.  It was my first offical 'trophy' (a ribbon).  The league I had
played in before had a trophy, but it never left the building.  I think that
ribbon will be one of my most prized possesions.  Anyways, the reason I
wrote this is because I have ambitions of someday playing women's pro hockey
and/or playing in the olympics.  I am looking on tips to get myself noticed
and tips on becoming a better player.  I have never had any training and
know I should enroll in goaltending schools.  That, as well as keeping my
grades up, putting education first, and joining a 'real' team (ice) are my
plans.  I can remember the first time I ever played hockey, and the first
time I ever played goalie, and I just knew that I would always love hockey.
I have raw talent, but I know if I can get it developed I will be able to go
far.  If anyone has advice on how I might better myself, or where I should
go, what teams I should join, goaltending schools to apply for, colleges to
apply for, ANYthing that may help me get out there and get noticed, PLEASE
let me know.  I need some advice!  Thank you very much in advance!  I really
appreciate it.

Well, my background on this is cycling, but the research I've seen is
valid for most sports.

For current incarnations of sports drinks, this really isn't true. Most
of them have gone to about a forumulation which doesn't sit in the gut
very long. They're really no worse than water for fluid uptake, and
they can definitely help endurance -- over the long term. Cycling
studies I've seen show pretty clearly that anything under 90 minutes,
sports drinks don't do much of anything. Water is just as good.

For short-term stuff, just drink water. If your games are 2 hours or
longer, I'd probably use a sports drink, but not all drinks are the
same. IMHO, I'd avoid those done with corn syrup and use ones with
either real sugar (good luck), or fructose. Of course, one you can
tolerate the taste helps, too. I believe Gatorade is corn syrup and
PowerAde is fructose.

After a hard workout, you have to worry about glycogen recharge, and
there, again, the sports drinks can help (but so can fruit juices! hint
hint, and you don't have to worry so much about the speed of digestion
after but you *definitely* want to do some carbohydrate and/or glucose
loading after practice to encourage the glycogen to reload into the
muscles).

I don't know about the C, although it sure can't hurt, but Potassium is
one of those things you lose in sweat. I'd suggest eating a banana
instead of taking a pill here, though. Easier uptake, and a lot more
satisfying. And you get the other stuff, too.

Getting back to the urination thing (I know, I know. no jokes, okay?),
you really want to make sure you're hydrated. The best way to verify
this is to see how much is leaving the system again. You want to drink
enough that you urinate on a regular basis -- my preference is that the
bladder fills (at least) after each meal. You're flushing waste
products out of the system, so you want to encourage this (and
discourage kidney and bladder stones, which form when the waste
products get too concentrated and crystalize in there...).

For practice and games, a glass of water before (as long as it doesn't
cause you to call time out during the first period!), water during the
game, and depending on how strong the workout is, one or two glasses
after the game (try one juice or powerade, one water), at the least.
You have to start drinking BEFORE you feel thirsty -- start no more
than 15 minutes into it.

If it's an afternoon or evening practice/game, I'd suggest drinking
enough water to make you go before you go to bed. And hopefully again
in the morning. If you're not inclined when you wake up the next
morning, you're not only seriously dehydrated, you're floating in waste
products that'd rather be elsewhere.

Remember, alcohol does NOT contribute your fluid intake. It takes water
OUT of the system (those potty breaks do not count!) and dehydrates
you. A beer is okay, but instead of replacing one of those water
glasses with a beer, add another one to compensate.
