For what it's worth:
I am one of those who isn't lucky enough to live near the US/Canada border
and get CBC, and I have to rely on our local cable systems.

I get down on my knees and kiss the TV each and every time CBS shows any
hockey coverage at all.

You don't seem to understand:
Ice hockey is *not* a major US sport for *most* of the nation. The exposure
it is getting here through CBS, no matter how minimal, sketchy, bad, or
whatever, is *more* than it usually gets, and is worth EVERY second!!!

I subscribed to cable TV just for the hockey in the olympics, as I can't
pull CBS off the airwaves.

Get real, folks, and consider yourselves lucky that CBS is showing hockey.
Just look at some of the other olympic sports that we never get to see at
all...

Trashing what we're lucky to have makes no sense.

Please accept my apologies for mistakenly identifying Wickenheiser as the captain. Ofcourse that honor belongs to Stacey Wilson. And a fine job she is doing. Got carried away with my ranting I guess. Try not to hold it against me. Thank you.

Dave, my condolences to your daughter for being yet another victim of Miller's ego. You are right Danielle is an outstanding goalie and deserved another shot after her injury. Did they believe that she would not be healed in time for the Olympics? But even if they did she proved she was ready if they had bothered to check. I had heard that there were a few raised eyebrows when she was released despite the injury. It would be nice if after all this was over ie. after the Olympics, someone would have the guts to stand up and say what they know. I know a few people who would love to but would be hurt by the repercussions. I'm not sure I totally agree with your assessment of Lesley Reddon's performance in the 7-4 game. Most of the goals were 2nd and 3rd shots. She could have probably been faulted on 2. It was more of a total team defense breakdown. Starting with the defensemen who didn't clear the front of the net. As well as very soft coverage of the trailers. It's clear Canada h!
as it's work cut out for them in the upcoming game with the US. Manon is capable of stealing a game. That's what it will probably take. However, I can't believe that right up to the gold medal game we are still having to hear about more off ice stuff with Miller right in the thick of it again. This woman can't get enough of the spotlight, good or bad. You would never know that this Olympics is for and about the athletes. Can you imagine Marc Crawford complaining to the media that "someone said something really offensive to Joe Sakic and he ran off the ice bawling". If the US player did say what has been reported she said then ofcourse that is a very inappropriate and a nasty thing to say to anyone. Although I have my doubts that's what was really said since now Goyette is saying she isn't sure and White claims she never said anything like that. Time after time Miller has shown that she is in way over her head in her judgement at dealing with players on the ice and media off th!
e ice. Ofcourse the CHA couldn't have known that she would have a brain meltdown in this way because how could they? Where has this woman proven herself before? Oh yeah in Calgary coaching recreational hockey and as an assistant coach with Team Canada in 92. Please. Again my condolences to your daughter. Hey maybe they will have enough soon to start a club. Angela James, Danielle Dube, Margot Page. Yeah yeah, I know they can't all make the team. But you would like to think that the best ones should. That's pretty good company, any of them could play on my team anytime.

The CIAU National Women's Hockey Championship final game will be broadcast
LIVE on TSN on Sunday March 1 from Concordia University in Montreal.

(By the way, the Stingers defeated Trois-Rivieres 10-1 in game one of
their best-of-three playoffs yesterday.)

So far, Concordia, Trois-Rivieres, Toronto, Guelph and St. Mary's are
confirmed. I haven't heard which team from the West will be here.

At Concordia, we've had more TV cameras and reporters around than I've
seen in the three years I've been here.

Consider yourself lucky. We in Canada have been inundated with CURLING. The only thing more boring than that is watching bowling. Hope you get to see some of the gold medal game. It may not be a big ratings catch usually but after the last game they had together they may change their minds. You know how the media loves to sensationalize. Pretty good soap opera material with the women's hockey don't you think?

From: "Wendy R. Painter"
Subject: first-time soreness

I played my first ever hockey scrimmage last night, and of course, I now
hurt all over. Since I haven't played a sport since I played basketball
one season at age 9, I'm not really sure what's "normal" soreness and what
pain I need to pay more attention to.

In particular, I'm wondering if anyone can offer me some advice on:

1. Strengthening my lower back. My back was really complaining last
night, giving me a dull, burning pain that would go away after I sat on
the bench a few minutes. Is this something that will strengthen on its own
over time, or should I be doing some additional exercises to specifically
strengthen the area? I am concerned mostly because I injured my back when
I was 17, and it periodically flares up on me. I'd hate to injure it
further if there are exercises that might help me avoid that. I'm only 25
years old, and I keep thinking that my back should not give me so much
pain already!

2. Before-game stretching. I know I probably should do some specific
warming up. I am searching the web as I write this to see if any sites
have prescribed warm-up routines, but if anyone is willing to share their
personal stretching/warm-up routines with me, I'd still be grateful!

Aside from wanting to take care of my body so that it lasts as long as it
can, I had a BLAST last night! It turns out that the coach for the adult
novice group was not there, so the group just scrimmaged...at first I
thought perhaps I shouldn't get on the ice for it, but then I thought,
"what the hell?" and just played. I made lots of goofy errors, but then
again, I still think I performed respectably for someone who's never even
touched stick to puck before. :) The guys (and one other woman) who were
out there were very encouraging and were obviously there to help one
another improve, not necessarily to count how many goals each "team" made.

So...I'll be out there next week, hopefully armed with some good warm-up
tactics and more aerobic stamina. I can't believe I waited this long to
start playing the game!

One of our teams have had the same exp. this past wkend. MSNBC filmed our
girls (Connecticut Polar Bears Squirt 1 Team) on Sat. Said it would show on
Feb. 17 at 9:00PM EST, MSNBC "News with Brian Williams". Hope so. Also, all
papers in Ct. have had some sort of article, even the local television station
has its own "Connecticut Connection" (with the Olympics). 15 min. of fame,
enjoy it. (But i have a feeling it will last a lot longer)

Just FYI:

Hayley Wickenheiser is not the captain of the Canadian team, Stacey Wilson
is. And Wilson, has the level head, amazing skills and controlled
attitude that that paition needs. The assistant captains are Cassie
Campbell and Therese Brisson.
From the quote posted, it is clear that Hayley acknowledges her
shortcomings and knows what she needs to work on. That shows that she has
the potential to one day, in the future, be a captain herself.

shown on the following channels?
CBUT*
CBS
CBC

I have access to CBUT but have no idea about what time drive there to
watch, I heard it was three a.m. and then heard differently. Thanks in
advance.

I was talking to my daughter tonight. She was telling me with all the
coverage of the women's hockey games on the Olympics, it seems that the media
has 'discovered' her team. This coming week both the local Albany TV station
and newspaper are coming out to do storieson the RPI's team as well as the
school newspaper.
The term bandwagonner comes to mind, but I guess I shouldn't complain. It is
about time women's sports gets noticed and the same phenomenon that happened
with women'sbasketball seems to be happening with hockey already. I am hoping
that this will then translate to more people attending
the games this coming weekend. I am curious if other teams are starting to
receive like interest from the media?
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- -------------------------------------------

You couldn't say it better when you call them "bandwagonners" But I guess
thats what it takes to get the publicity out. I think the media thing started
for me this summer when I played on my first all girls roller hockey team.
Some of the women wanted some exposure and called the newspapers and what not
and we had some attention that really attracted a lot more women. Now that I
am at college again (my second year and season) with the roller hockey club
here, i have never had any attention for being the only girl on the team,
until now of course, with the olympics. School and local paper. So it's been
good for the sport. The adult league I also play in has recieved a couple of
calls from women interested it the sport (And believe me this is far from
hockeytown) I think the attention is great and I am looking forward to seeing
where women's hockey will be after the olympics. (although I must admit I
wish I could have grown up with this kind of exposure)

I have been reading all the comments about the Canadian team and the criticisms of Shannon Miller.
I am truely an outsider on this and have only read the comments with interest, but since being
from the States, I don't have deep feelings for the problem.

My question to those of you who have been commenting on this issue, What about the sacrafices that
Shannon Miller has done to become the coach of the team? Have you thought of the thankless job
she is trying to do and what she has given up for the team? She apparently has put her career on
hold to coach the team. What other things has she given up? I was just wondering if any of you
thought about how demoralizing it has to be for the team and the coach to be second-guessed,
criticized and basically torn apart in all the medias?

I see the same type of thing happening with the Canadian men's team. Crawford being criticized
for playing Roy and everyone saying he is playing favorites because Roy is his goaltender. I'll
tell you, after last nights game, I would prefer to see someone else in goal, but not because he
did a bad job!8-)

Thank goodness such controversies have not hit the US team. (yet!)

CBUT and CBC are one and the same. CBUT are the call letters for CBC's
