And did Mike Richter make the Olympic team? Of course he did. They know
he's a big game player. The preliminary rounds only determine seeding and
really don't mean too much. They know Richter will crank it up a notch
when the games really mean something.

But.. the question still remains.. why is Sami Jo Small over in Nagano as
the #3 goaltender while Danielle is left behind? It still doesn't make
sense.

>Point is -- it's not 1996 any more. What was then might not be now.
>Yes, experience counts for a lot, but so does *current* performance.

Yes.. and I would suggest that the current performance of the two
goaltenders on Team Canada have been mediocre to say the least. Now
Miller has a real problem on her hands. The last two games, both
goaltenders had bad outings... she's coming into the finals without a hot
goaltender. Who's she going to start? Sami Jo?

>That's what makes coaching and GM work such a challenge. Just because
>someone was very good in 1996 doesn't mean she kept that caliber of

She was also rated the #1 goaltender in '97 I believe.. and then suddenly
she's only good enough to be fourth.. come on...

>My question, though, is this: how much of this criticism is valid? And

Actually, from what I've heard, a lot of it does appear to be valid, and
has been floating around for some time.

I don't think that's the case at all.. I think we all went in the Olympics
with our eyes wide open. We were all aware of how close Team USA is with
Canada, as evidenced by the 7-6 pre-olympic exhibition record, and quite
clearly there was a level of respect for Team USA.

I would suggest that perhaps that the head coach of Team Canada doesn't
have this same respect as witnessed by the arrogance she displayed prior
to leaving for Nagano at the Vancouver Airport by guaranteeing her team
would win the gold medal.

Everyone who has watched the Olympics know that Canada is not the team it
used to be, and even if they were the team they used to be Team USA would
still have a legitimate shot at beating them.

The Swedish coach said it best, they're simply not passing as well as they
used too. Way too many players trying to do it all themselves, and too
much individual play. The Team Canada "attack" is gone. There are some
players on that team that, quite honestly, shouldn't have made it.

Perhaps Canadians are having trouble with accepting results like 2-2 ties
with Teams like Sweden and only 2-0 wins against Teams like China.

In a sense, regardless of what happened, this tends to be true. When you
look at the overall picture, the Candian team lost, and with that, has
negative feelings. I know when I have played in games if we lose
(especially when we have a pretty big lead), I'd be pissed enough to
start a confrontation.

(Now if I only remember...) I read an article about the US vs. CAN game
istelf, and recalled reading that after the Canadians pulled a 4-1 lead,
a few of their players were doing some trash talking. Obviously, nobody
is an innocent person.

Also, Just like the US Men's team (who lost 4-2 to Sweden), the Canadian
team is getting their "We're number 1" tossed aside, and someone's ego
is stepping in trying to get back the truth in that statement. I think
that when you are atop for so long, your head tends to, um, swell, and
when you're dethroned, boy do you ever have a headache! :D

Regardless of what happens, I'm sticking by the Red, White, and Blue! Go
USA! (especially #21 :> )

Does anyone know what teams will be playing in the Club Championship
tournament at Clarkson? Are there A and B divisions?
Is this along the same lines as the AWCHA Club Championships that were
hosted by RPI in '94 and '95 (back in my undergrad days there..)?

Our team from Penn State is headed up there, and we've heard that
Skidmore and UMass (don't know which one) are supposed to play.

Subject: US-Canada game- reffing?

One thing I wondered about in the US-Canada game was the reffing. The
ref obviously intended to call a tight game, and the teams, we all know,
are chippy, so a lot of penalties ensued, but the lame CBS coverage I
watched made it impossible to know how evenhandedly the game was called.
(Not that this is easy to determine with any TV coverage, but CBS didn't even
show all the game.) At least I was able to see that all the penalties I saw
called were real-- in other words, a player who was called for crosschecking
actually did crosscheck-- which is a step up from some NHL games I've seen,
but I couldn't tell how many penalties were missed.

What did other announcers have to say about this? Are there any listers
out there who saw the game live?

I think "know" is rather strong here. There aren't many american
goalies who are better. that doesn't mean Richter today is the Richter
of the world cup. He's clearly not.

> goaltender. Who's she going to start? Sami Jo?

I expect it'll be Manon.

I sure wouldn't use the word "everyone" here, but you're welcome to
your opinion.

I don't believe, frankly, that swapping goalies AND Angela James onto
this Canadian team would markedly improve the team. If there are faults
on this Canada team, they go much deeper than a simple player swap
might fix. And I'm not convinced the Canadian team is seriously flawed.
It may not be as good as hoped, or it may not be peaking in the
Olympics, or it just may find that the competition is better than
expected. I don't think it's the choice of goalies, the lack of James,
or the coaching.

But I guess we'll see how it goes when it's time to fish or cut bait.
Which Canadian team will show up after the gold?

Subject: Danielle Dube - Great response

I have been really pleased by all the response my original note has
created......most of it in private emails of support for Danielle. Many Thanks
to you all!!
There have been a lot of good comments..and questions.....and I agree that
sports is not a perfect world.

I do want to say that Danielle has been "EXTREMELY" quiet on this item since
being cut. I've had to bite my lip numerous times and avoid jumping into the
discussions on her behalf. But the last item with Sami Jo Small was the straw
that broke my back and Danielle's.

If you want to sit back and passively support a sports program that treats its
players, coaches and supporters in this way..then that's your perogative...but
I think it's important to raise issues when they are real! It's the only way
things get better.

As I said, there is more to the story....and some day soon all of you may get
to see it.

As for Danielle's performance...yes she would be the 1st to say that she did
not have her best camp.....but playing a grand total of 3 games in 3
months...having no goalie coach...and having a coach that (despite the press)
does not create a environment where it's fun to play. In the end, Danielle was
glad to come home and start her pro hockey career all over again.

Thanks again for all the support I've had for Danielle.......it's great!

ok, before the olympics started CBS was supossed to cover the medal game live,
so it'd be on at like 3 or 4 in the morning. Then the paper said it'd be on at
6-8 which made me mad since I'd only get to see the first half hour before
school, now the paper says its on from 7-9, so now I don't get to see any of
it, and I'll be sitting at school all day wondering about the outcome. If you
ask me, CBS is screwing us majorly. Between NBC and CBS, the next 4 or 5
olympics are going to suck, with the coverage we've gotten from them.

I think that it has been pretty obvious that Canada is no long THE
superpower since last year's Worlds. And yes, those celebrations sting.
And yes, there probably was trash talk from both sides. But, the fact
remains that even in trash talking there are places you don't go. Whomever
made comments about Goyette's father is an ignorant, classless individual.

As much as I hate to admit it, I've been very worried about Canada's
chances of winning the gold for a very long time. The Canadians have quite
a few weaknesses (which have been oft analyzed here) and the Americans have
made impressive strides. My nationalism says "Go Canada Go" but my heart
of hearts says that its going to be too close to call. Whichever team
executes will win. Perhaps this ammunition that the classless US player
gave to the Canadians will be the edge they need.

Waiting with baited breath,

Milton

Subject: The Women have been discovered

I was talking to my daughter tonight. She was telling me with all the coverage of the women's
hockey games on the Olympics, it seems that the media has 'discovered' her team. This coming week
both the local Albany TV station and newspaper are coming out to do stories on the RPI's team as
well as the school newspaper.

The term bandwagonner comes to mind, but I guess I shouldn't complain. It is about time women's
sports gets noticed and the same phenomenon that happened with women's basketball seems to be
happening with hockey already. I am hoping that this will then translate to more people attending
the games this coming weekend.

I am curious if other teams are starting to receive like interest from the media?

Subject: Olympic Games

I was noticing something interesting while visiting the Nagano website. Do you realize that of
all the competition at the Olympics, Ice Hockey is the only sport where one team plays in direct
competition to the others? All the other sports are each person or team taking turns and trying
to perform their personal best. Other than curling, where even there the teams take turns, the
teams do not compete as a unit.

In the summer Olympics there is baseball, basketball, soccer, etc that are team sports and even
the track meets are races against the opponent. I find it curious that the winter Olympics don't
have such head to head competition. Any thoughts why we don't have more team sports in the winter
games?

Let's just hope the Canada can somehow pull this off tomorrow. It does
seem pretty obvious that an option of a stand up goalie as Danielle is
would be the best option against the US. Both Reddon and Rheaume give up
way too many rebounds. The strong US forwards just go to the net with
abandon.

Somehow lost in the Goyette incident was the fact that Canada just
competely fell apart. There is just no way that should have happened.
It's rare to see even a house level team lose from a 4-1 lead in the third
period.

I do recall in the 3Nations cup that Canada came back from a defecit once
and then the US won the final, so perhaps we will see the reverse in the
gold medal game.
