Well I got the ol skates out last night, right before the mens US vs belarus
came on. And put them on, just to help get used to them. I think I watched
maybe 10 minutes of the 1st period before falling asleep, I woke up with 8
minutes left in the 2nd period. The first thing that came into my head was,
get these skates off. Earlier today I actually skated around with my brother
and this other kid down the road, first time I've skated since Halloween, I
was surprised at how well I was skating, and especially ball handeling (I
practice with a ball since we play with a ball, unfortunatly, I'd rather play
with a puck) Come to think of it I didn't fall once, I think thats a first.
But anyways after half an hour my feet were killing me so I sat down and
unlaced them and layed (in the middle of the road) for about 15 minutes, and
then I relaced them and skated for another half hour and then we headed home,
so I could catch the game on tv. I wasn't impressed by the coverage of last
nights mens game, every time they stopped they put a commercial on, the first
5 or 6 minutes they showed more commercial than game, and then the womens game
today, they didn't show some parts, including canadas 2nd goal. Well I suposse
I should get going, since I'm going to a CSU hockey game tonight.

WARNING: I will be discussing the preliminary USA-Canada game, so for those
who don't want their game spoiled, please take note!

5 unanswered goals! I have taken note of the Miller decision re: Angela
James situation and not said a word, as I don't think I know enough to say
one way or the other, and also that I am just watching and waiting to see.
However, in the last prelims, for a coach (Miller) to not pull a goalie
when the goals keep going in, I have to take objection to her strategy. I
don't know if there are other factors (Manon being hurt?) but as a goalie,
I know when I have a bad game and if a coach DOESN'T replace me, I'm
humiliated, incensed and angry, because even though we stand alone, it's
still a TEAM sport, and we feel that we let our teammates down. Not to
mention her teammates begin to lose confidence, and then the s--t rolls
downhill from there. As an American, I'm glad we won. As a goalie, I'm
incensed at Miller for abandoning Reddon and not changing her out. She
must feel like s--t now, and I feel bad for the Canadian team. So, if
Canada doesn't recover from this emotional pounding, they have no one to
blame but the coach. I now have to wonder about the Angela situation....

Can someone please post when the gold medal game will really be played.
I'm pretty sure (not positive) that the US coverage is tape delayed, so I
need to know when to stop listening to the news.

Thanks

Does anyone have any Cammi Granato quotes? Or possibly any other catchy

would like them. Thanks.

I watched both the CBC and CBS coverage of today's Canada vs USA
game.
Interesting to see CBC showed and reported on the post-game incident,
CBS ignored it completely. I do not know if TNT reported it.
I know there is lots of "trash talk" in sports, but this was too
much. There are absolutley no excuses for this behaviour.

For those who didnt hear about it, this is basically what happened.

As the two teams were leaving the ice, Looney skated to Goyette and
made a comment about Goyette's recently deceased father, and then
laughed at her. Danielle was visibly upset, and quickly stormed off
the ice.

I missed the end of the game. Was this confirmed by third parties? If this
is true, not only is it reprehensible conduct but the USA have just handed
an immense psychological weapon to Canada before the gold medal game.

One tip given for arch pain was...

4) Don't make the bottom laces so tight. These can be a bit looser. The
most
important part is the top. I even bought Velcro straps (similar to
closures
on ski boots) to go around the upper parts of my skates. This way, I have
full control over how tight the tops of my skates are. (And I don;t have to
worry about the laces loosening up.)

I just want to add, that if you put an extra twist in your laces between
the place that you want tight and the place that you want loose it helps
keep the tightness in the right place for the length of a practice or a
game.

Sadly, CBS has always had poor olympics coverage.... I am surprised they
gave women's hockey the time they did...

I was reading something about this whole situation on CNN/SI. From what I
read, after the game, Miller had some words with Cammi Granato concerning
the situation. If you're interested, there is a link at this site (I
don't actually have the link, but it's there...)

Sorry it is so long! :> Anyway, I guess we just have to face these teams
have some bad blood... It is something you hate to see, but it's there...
At least we'll get to see a real meaningful gold medal game... Will the
American's finally overcome the Canadian Women's hockey supremacy? Or
will Dannielle Goyette win the medal in honor of her father?

Either way, there will be a happy ending. :>

Just saying hello...
I remember someone saying that everyone on the List seemed to come from
Ontario - well, I am typing this in Canberra, Australia, on a nice balmy
34 degree celcius day! I am wearing my ice-skates with hot wet socks -
yes, another breaking-in thing - despite the strange looks I am getting
from my neighbours! I spent last year in Canada - learnt to skate - and
have decided to look for a team here in Aust (I miss Canada but it's
nice to be home).
Anyway, this morning I wandered down to our one and only ice rink to
watch the kids practice their hockey and find out some details. We will
have two (!) womens teams this year - we've only had one for about 5
years. The season starts on March 22nd and our fees are okay, I guess
(AUS$480). Also the teams are putting up a Web page - I'll put the
address on the List when I find out the details.
Last month when the temperatures reached 40 degrees celcius the ice-rink
had to close down because it was starting to melt into a giant puddle!
Strange but true.
Oh - the Winter Olympics are on here - from about 10.00pm onwards - on a
commercial channel. I've seen a bit of the womens hockey - the
Australian commentators keep calling the puck a "ball" and the t
Canadian co-host keeps laughing at them!
Bye!
Christine.

Confirmed by the Canadians. The issue was taken to Cammi Granato, who
said she'd deal with it. Which I'm sure she has.

I don't. Ultimately, the game didn't mean anything. And with the
important game looming, under the assumption that Manon is the starting
goalie for that game, you hurt yourself a lot more putting her in here
than leaving her on the bench and rested for the game that DOES matter.

What you say is true for an individual game -- but this is bigger than
one game, and sometimes the strategy for a series of games is different
than if you're just playing one.

Sometimes you just have to take one for the team.

> As a goalie, I'm
> incensed at Miller for abandoning Reddon and not changing her out.

I'll bet Reddon knew what was going on -- and the purpose of all this
isn't to win that game, but to win the gold medal. That game was only
one piece, and a pretty unimportant piece at that, of that goal.

Psychologically, that collapse had to shake their confidence, and that
can't help, but the team can build from it, and needs to. But not
pulling the goalie wa, IMHO, the right decision when you look at the
final goal and beyond the game in progress.

Tournament play is different from simply playing a game.

Well, if Shelley Looney did say that, here's what I
would tell Goyette.

Use that for strength. Go out there, kick some
American butt, and dedicate it to your father.

I did read in an article that Shelley Looney denied
saying that, is that true?

I also have a great theory, before the Olympics I
made this up. When Canada plays the US, whoever
loses, will win the medal. GO CANADA

PS. Can someone email me with info about college an
the Olympics, I mean processes of playing in them.
My dad is dependind on me to get a scholarship, I
have my doubts, but some people on my team say I have
a chance to go somewhere. If I would happen to get an
American citizenship in 2000, my parents are gonna
make me, and I was good enough to make the Olympics,
would I be able to play on Canada. Just curious for
me, and about the whole process in general.

Whatever came over Shelley Looney? That's reprehensible. However, why didn't
Shannon Miller talk to Ben Smith? He's the coach, and has the power to bench
or punish someone. Cammi Granato is the team captain, yes, but she *isn't*
the coach. She can't bench anyone, she can't fine anyone, and she has no
authority to do anything but talk to another player.

As for the Canadian goalie situation...I'm sure politics were involved in the
goalie situation, but if Danielle Dube was going to challenge being cut, she
should have filed an appeal several months ago. Complaining now doesn't do a
thing. Statistically, Reddon and Rheaume were better than Dube (though not by
much, unlike the American situation where it was obvious in November that Erin
Whitten was likely not going to make the team).

And complaining, whether individually or through a third party, isn't going to
help Dube's chances of making it onto the next national team, or to the
Olympics in 2002. Shannon Miller probably won't be the coach next time,
but the officials of the national program will likely be the same, and they'll
remember. I distinctly recall that after Manon Rheaume was cut last year, she
gave a couple of interviews saying how disappointed she was, went straight
back to Reno, and basically kept her mouth shut except for talking to the
local papers about Renegades' games. Unless and until the officials who
allegedly politicked against her leave the national program, it might be a
good idea for Danielle Dube to do the same. I know it isn't fair, but this is
the sort of thing that can mark a player for life.

I'm totally amazed at the poor coverage of the USA vs. Canada
Women's Hockey Game. First, the game was scheduled to be live
at 6:00 a.m. but never was on. Second, the afternoon coverage
began at 2:30 p.m. but they didn't start the game until 4:30.
Third, they skipped the second period and parts of the third.
Fourth, too many and too long breaks for commercials and other
segments.

I hope this isn't the type of coverage that will occur with
the goal medal game! The coverage for the Men's teams was
much better even though the games didn't matter.

Also, What happened to LifeTime Television - I thought that
they were supporting Women's Hockey and had committed to
broadcast games??

According to the article on the website,

http://www.cnnsi.com/olympics/events/1998/nagano/sports/oly_hockey.html

Sandra Whyte made the remarks, not Looney.

Regardless of who it was, it was still uncalled for. Girls, grow up!! Trash
talk during the game is one thing. But, when the buzzer sounds, go out
there, smile, and shake hands. The game is over.
