Could someone please post the OWHA provincial results. We had to leave

think that its worthy(newsworthy?)to report!!

Thanks

Hello all,

I am graduating college and moving to Minneapolis this summer. I was
wondering if there were any teams in that area who were looking for a D (or
even a forward- I'm not picky)? I've had three years experience on a club
team (B level in Illinois). Please email me back personally, if you have
ANY information.

Thank you!

Subject: jerks at my hockey game

Well today we played roller hockey, our usual 2 games on saturdays. So far we
had beaten all the other teams (theres only three of them besides us), so we
were the best team so far. And there were these guys at their end (the end we
were shooting at) but every time I was even back there I heard them say "take
'her' out", they never said it to anybody else on my team, sure they were
trash talkin to everybody, but not sayin to take them out. Which one of them
did, not on purpose, we both collided, and I just happened to go over the top
of him and slam into the concrete and boards, which is not feeling to great
about now. Sure, I'm used to the girls and hockey bit, but this makes me mad.
It's a good thing they were standing behind the fence (like the glass in ice
hockey) because if they weren't, I probably would've purposely fell over the
boards right into them. I'm the only girl in my age division now, and thats
the first problem, well whatever ya want to call it, this year. And sure I may
not have scored a goal yet, while everybody else on the team has scored a
bunch, I still help out. I should have the nick name, postmaster, I've hit the
post I would say at least 10 times in 6 games. But still after the whole
flying incident today everybody asked if I was alright, which in a way bugs
me, because to me, its like saying shes a girl and wimpy so we should ask her.
and they usually don't ask the guys if they're all right. I guess thats it.

Tim-----How about some photography advice /tips for those of us who take
cameras to the games.
	-Where's the best location
	-What film
-concentrate on one area or follow a player?
etc. etc.

I use a Minolta X-700 with a 70-210 Zoom and 1000 film. Should I use the
1600 Fuji? Occassionally I even get a decent picture.

Jennie,

This used to bug me too - I have been in this zamboni league at a local
hockey rink for three years now on Wed nights and just this past December I
started going on Monday nights too where a different coach was teaching the
class. At first he asked me if I was all right when the slightest thing
happened and it bugged me. Then I had a talk with him and said I felt like
everyone was backing off from me when I had the puck, kind of to give me
room and stuff because I was a girl and no one wanted to hit me (by the
way, I am the only girl in this league). He promised me that at least he
wouldn't "treat me like a girl" (my words, not his - I can't remember
exactly what he said). The coach still asks if I am ok when he sees me take
a good fall and it looks like I hit my head but I don't mind that anymore.
I figure I'd rather have him ask me that than ignore me completely -
especially when the time comes that I really do need help off the ice. He's
started asking the guys that too, especially when they don't come off the
ice right away.

Enjoy yourself and try not to dwell on the fact that they ask you if you're
ok. Think of it as those guys actually caring that you're not hurt at all.
I think it's kind of sweet that they do care.

Does anyone have a off-ice training program they follow? What does it
consist of? I am going to try to do a lot of off-ice training this
summer with a x-country ski team. But until the summer I need to work
on training some what.

When I was injured this past winter, I took it upon myslef to become the
offical team photographer for my team. I found that 1600 speed film works
pretty well, but 1) it is VERY EXPEN$IVE and 2) if you enlarge the photos,
they get VERY grainy. I would stick with the 100 speed film - either Fuji or
Kodak (stay away from the "bargain brands.")

Also - best spot to shoot - MOVE AROUND for different angles. If you can sit
on the bench or penalty box, that is great, beacuse you don;t have to worry
about the glass - you can shoot at a higher speed. But that is not where the
best action is. (Unless you have a very big lens, so you can shoot towards
the goal.)

I have had my best results for action shots with a 135 mm lens. I have used a
200 mm lens, but that is very hard to focus - esp 1) for the amateur and 2)
since the players move so fast. I have had some success with that lens, but
it is usually better to get shots of players faces, etc. than action.

For good action shots, usually on the sides, near the corner. Try to line up
so you can see inside the net (so when the puck goes in, you can show it.)
Lots of stuff going on in there - especially near the net!!

As with shooting video, try to follow one player - you will NEVER be able to
keep up with the puck and focus simultaneously!!) Also - you can get a lot
of great shots, even without the puck in it.

I have a few photo's on our website - 2 of which (by dumb luck) I happened to
get the puck going into the net!! (www.brooklynblades.org go to the
MULTIMEDIA section - then click on candid & game photos.) But this will
only happen if you shoot a lot of frames. If you TRY to get a pic of the puck
as it's going into the net - it is already too late.

Use a motor drive - you WILL have to burn a LOT of film to get a few good
shots. I have spent as many as 7 rolls during a single game (but that was
when I was shooting the 3 Nations Cup.) Shoot a lot - and you will be
surprised at your results.

Good luck!!

Jen29H,
I totally know how you feel. I'm a a small town roller hockey league and last
season I was the only girl on the upper league (grades 7-9) and it was my
first time in that league. I was in 9th grade but the season before was my
first season ever and the guys scared me ( : so I played on the lower league
(grades 4-6) anyway, I went up to the 7-9th league when I was in 9th grade and
all the guys treated me like all polite and stuff. I was the only girl and
they would back off if I had the puck and stuff. Even at our first practice
one of the guys said "Our team looks really good, except that girl," he hadn't
even seen me play yet! Not that I'm a great player or anything but I showed
them. By the end of the season I knew I had their respect as a good player
when I over heard this conversation:
"I hope more girls don't start playing."
"Yeah, I would feel bad checking them," then they looked over at me and both
said "But not her!"
It was soo great to finally be accepted. I mean, the other teams will always
think of you as a girl but if you just play hard their opinion won't matter as
long as you have the respect of your team mates. It does start all over every
season though.
Last Saturday I had the second game of this season. There are now 2 girls on
the upper league this season. We lost, but I love hockey!
Sometimes it is hard being a girl in a "guys sport," there are times when I
guess I don't measure up. Like last Saturday there was this big guy pushing
me out of the way and I tried to push him back but he didn't even budge. Oh
well! I've only made 2 goals my entire 3 seasons of hockey but I know they
couldn't make their goals without me. This season the coach is a friend of the
family and he made me captain, and the guys like the idea! anyway, have fun
and remember, we're not doing this so some stupid guys will respect us, we're
playing because ita fun! -Corrie

Run out and find a copy of The Village Voice, April 28, 1998, Vol. XLIII
No. 17 ...

It's their 2nd annual Women in Sport Issue, and it's great. My favorite
article was a round-up of 10 athletic women photographed doing their
sport, but other great articles include a look at women's pro sports,
female athletes in prison, and an expose of women's sports magazines,
including a nice mention of Go, girl!

Shannon may not have been the 'best' choice for Team Canada, but she was a
good choice. Yes, she made some decisions I may not have made, and maybe
Canada could have won the gold. Then again, it was a very tight game, and
they were right behind Team USA in the end. She took Team Canada to the
silver though, and that is highly commendable.

There seems to be a real pro movement for Shannon. Well, I think she
was OK as coach for team Canada... just not the best coach for Team Canada.
She made some critical errors... Who knows if that cost them the Gold!!! I
wish her all the luck in her new job. Hopefully the new Team Canada Coach
will be more experienced/qualified and gender will not be the most important
factor in the selection!

Sue is right. Shannon Miller did a fine job coaching. I wouldn't
mind
having her as a coach. Yes, I rooted for USA, but I know it was an
equally
matched game. Someone had to win, and this time it was USA.
