Significantly less than men do, at least in my experience. Have you been
hanging out in a lot of women's locker rooms Phil?

Me too!

My 11 year old plays with the girls 19 and under team sometimes. The
girl's locker room is next to the board room. Imagine my chagrin when, in
the middle of a board meeting, I heard the clear, joyful sounds of my sweet
little girl as she let loose a string of explitives brought on by a round
of teasing by her team mates. She must have learned it in the boy's locker
room, her usual hang out.

(She can also fart on demand, something that only 5 years of boy's hockey
can teach.)

the publishers of the international Encyclopedia of Women and Sport are
looking for people to contribute short articles (500-1500 words) about
women's sports in terms of women's participation historically.

Anyone out there interested in writing about ice hockey and/or roller
hockey. Email me privately at email@hidden for more info.

Best,
Melissa

Subject: Women;s Hockey gear

I;ve been using a pair of Bauers SP 3000 shoudler pads for about a year -
(the entire length of my hockey career, actually.) After I got some
experience playing, i started to realize that not all hockey gear was supposed
to big & bulky. These friggin things are so big, I could not get my jersey on
by myself!! I thought it was me. The salesman where I bought these convinced
me that I needed such large shoulder pads, due to my being (ahem) "topheavy."
Not knowing a thing about hockey, or anyone to ask for advice (I was jsut so
anxious to buy the gear & start those clinics!!), and armed with enough credit
cards to glue together to make a pair of shinpads, I just bought whatever the
guy said I needed.

While in Brampton this past weekend, I went with my teammates to a hockey
store (a rare find in Canada) to buy new shoulder pads. I asked the salesman
to show me the woemn;s pads. I took one look at the Louivilles, and did all
I could to keep from laughing. They looked so cheap & flimsy. (Sorry to all
the Louisville fans out there.) After trying on no less than 1/2 dozen pairs
of pads, I decided on the ITECH SP 650's. They look & feel as solid as the
Bauers, but fit much better. Much less bulk. I brought in my Bauers foir the
salesman to take a look at, and he pointed out everything that was wrong - too
much room in the neck, the plastic shoulder peices did not even rest on my
shoudlers - they were hanging way off to the side. He said that if I ever got
hit, they would have offered little or no protection.

Bottom line - doesn;t matter if it;s men''s or women;s gear - it just has to
offer the right protection & fit correctly. Also - if I feel that my
equipment will not protect me (I got that impression immediately with the
Louisville pads), it could cause a psychological disadvantage. If I have
super equipment, & go out there & feel like robocop, I know that I don;t have
to hold back.

Subject: Looking for a summer tournament

Well, we had a team selected, a coach lined up, and practice ice booked for
a local tournament in July, and the tournament cancelled. So now I'm looking
for a west coast tournament in June or July for a team made up of girls
aged 13-19. Anyone have any ideas. We're from San Jose, CA area.

The tournament we had signed up for was for adult women. So we're looking for
an adult women's tournament, or a girls tournament.
