Fans!
The old saying that great goalies are flakie holds true here. Having the
pleasure of knowing the "Great Shabooeee" l can assure you that she is one
of the best teenage goalies in our fair land. She is also working hard to
keep the old saying previously mentioned true.
Her admiration for a certain #21 is although somewhat extreme but non the
less genuine.
l must admit l have not seen magical things happen while in possesion
of that Granato model. My daughter on two separate occassions ended holding
The Cammi model in two pieces as the shaft broke half way up with very
little use. She has since moved to a different model. l think Shabooeee
will admit her slapshot should not demand that much respect!

Subject: Cheap Sticks in MA
If any of you who live in Massachusetts need a new stick (or five), the
pro-shop at the Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington has some great deals. My team
played there last night & I decided to go in & look around...turns out they
have a ton of sticks on sale at $5!!! The Bruins practice at that arena,
and just leave the sticks, so the rink manager decided to get rid of 'em. I
picked up an Easton Graphite shaft (with blade) for $5. Some of these
"used" sticks haven't even had tape put on them.
So, If you can get there, do it soon, 'cause they'll be gone by the end of
the week.

The Tampa Bay Lightning also has/had the Lightning Girls. I don't know if
they still have them, since they were received about as enthusiastically as a
case of food poisoning by the Florida hockey community, but ESPN doesn't
exactly concentrate on the stands unless they're watching that Elvis
impersonator in Pittsburgh....

Subject: Goalies
Whenever I hear of goalies being the team coocoos, all I can think of is a
story from Ken Dryden's autobiography, =The Game=. Dryden was the #1 goalie
for Montreal during its 70's dynasty, and the Habs were playing an exhibition
game against the Czech national team. The players and their wives were
guests at a buffet the night before the game, and had a fine time socializing
and eating.
Lynda Dryden, Ken's wife, ended up next to a Czech woman who turned out to be
the wife of the Czech #1 goalie. After a few minutes of chitchat, the Czech
woman leaned forward and said in a whisper, "The other players, they think my
Jiri is crazy. Do they think your husband is crazy, too?"
Lynda never told Ken her own reply.....

It is my understanding that the shoulder pads and pants are specially
designed for women. I have looked at, tried on, and done side-by-side
comparisons with Louisville womens shoulder pads and pants vs. boys/mens
versions. I have also compared the Bauer girls/womens shoulderpads with
the boys/mens models. You can tell a difference. However, I was
looking through the Louiville wholesale catalogs with a local shop owner
and discovered that the shin guards, gloves and elbow pads listed for
*women* are actually boys/mens models "recommended" for women, i.e. that
those models are more likely to be suited for a woman's needs.
So, with respect to gloves I would say that the pro-shop is correct.

My wife has long narrow hands and she and other women have found that
some of the Jofa gloves fit them best. Tackla makes a nice women's
pant and we've been selling the Bauer women's shoulder pad.
WSI/Hockey Joc and Eliminator both make nice pelvic protector shorts.
There is a women's team based in the rink near us and this is
becoming an important segment of our business. The word I am hearing
from the equipment manufacturers (at least some of them) is that they
are planning to improve their product offerings in this market
segment.
