I'm very happy to announce that we've just released a major new piece
of functionality for our plaidworks web pages.

We now have a full, interactive web-discussion forum available for your
use. This is a web-based system that allows you to post messages and
read what others have posted, all via your browser.

We are using this to create discussion areas for many of the obvious
hockey topics: there are boards for all of the NHL, IHL and AHL teams
created, as well as other minor leagues, the major-junior leagues,
amateur hockey and the like.

We've also used this new interactive system to fulfill a number of
common requests we've had here on plaidworks. There is now, for
instance, a full section dedicated to classified ads, with areas for
the buying and selling of tickets, another for hockey equipment, a
third for autographs and memorabilia, and another for other hockey
stuff.

We've also created an area where hockey players looking for teams or
playing time in their local area can place ads, or for hockey teams
looking for players to let people know of openings.

Another new discussion area is an announcement board for Hockey Tournaments.

Our web site's Hot Stove league, which used to be a static page, has
been replaced by a discussion forum just for trade rumors and the like,
and we've added discussion boards to the Hot Site and Cool Site pages
as well, so you can tell *us* (and everyone else) the sites you feel
are worth attention.

We're open to adding new discussions as well. If you think something
ought to be added, drop us a note and let us know. There's even a
(gasp) discussion forum set up just so you can send feedback and
suggestions! (grin).

The URL to visit this is . Please go
take a look, visit, drop off a few messages, and let us know what you
think. We feel this board adds a lot of new power and capability to our
systems here, because the web boards are a nice complement to the
mailing lists -- discussions can be created and deleted as major issues
appear in hockey, and it gives us a legitimate outlet for material that
just doesn't lend itself to the mailing list format (like the
Tournament Calendar or the Classifieds) or a place to house some of the
messages that we've discouraged off of the mail lists, like the
autograph hounds and the merchandise sellers. They now have a place to
put their ads where you can go if you want to read them, and if you're
not, it's easier to stay away from them than on a mail list.

None of this *replaces* any of the mailing lists we're running. We
think these systems will work quite nicely in parallel and each has
their strengths and weaknesses. We feel at *over time*, some material
will migrate to the web off the lists -- SHARKS-TICKETS, for instance,
really is better off as a web board, we think. But we're not going to
force it either way. Both systems are available, and we'll use both for
what they're good at, and it'll be the users who decide ultimately what
goes where and how it's used....

So go take a look, let us know what you think, tell us how to improve
it, and generally go HAVE FUN! Isn't that why we're here?

(for the nerds out there, the system we're using is called Web Crossing
(), and it's running on our MacOS-server
8550/135. Very flexible, easy to configure, and if I ever get the spare
bucks, I can upgrade it to include a real-time java-based chat system
and some other features, but don't hold your breath this hockey
season....)

Not only this, we got it out BEFORE OPENING NIGHT! (barely!). Amazing,
I finally met a deadline... (grin)

Have fun! Now *I* get to quit writing these systems for a few weeks and
start relaxing and using them instead.... At least until the next Tango
release comes out...

Dear Women-In-Hockey Subscribers,

I am writing on behalf of the American Women's Hockey Coaches Association.
We have a committee set up that is designed to expand the growth of American
women's college ice hockey-primarily by helping club teams reach varsity
status. The NCAA considers women's hockey to be an "emerging sport", and it
is waiting for more varsity teams to exist before it will sponsor an NCAA
championship.

The first step for our committee is to compile the most accurate and
thorough list of current programs. We feel that a complete directory will
not only assist us in giving the sport more visibility and credibility, but
will also provide factual information that will be useful to everyone.

Please look over the two lists of varsity and club college programs. If you
know about any other programs that I do not have listed please e-mail me
directly at "email@hidden".

Varsity Programs: Amherst, Augsburg, Boston College, Bowdoin, Brown,
Chatham, Colby, Colgate, Connecticut College, Cornell, Dartmouth, Gustavus
Adolphus, Hamilton, Harvard, Maine, Middlebury, Minnesota, New Hampshire,
Niagara, Northeastern, Princeton, Providence, RPI, RIT, Sacred Heart, St.
Benedict, St. Lawrence, Wesleyan, Williams, and Yale.

Club Programs: Bates, Boston University, Bowling Green, Carleton, Clarkson,
U of Colorado, Colorado College, U of Connecticut, Holy Cross, Illinois,
Iowa State, Lake Forest, Mankato, U of Mass-Amherst, MIT, Michigan State,
Mich. Tech., U of Michigan, Minnesota, U of Minn-Duluth, Mount Holyoke
College, North Country CC, Ohio State, Penn State, Skidmore, Smith, Southern
Maine, St. Catherines & St. Thomas, St. Cloud, St. Mary's, St. Olaf, Union,
Vermount, West. Mich. Univ., Wheaton, William Smith, Wisc.-Madison,
Wisc.-River Falls, and Wisc.-Eau Claire.

Thank you very much for your assistance in compiling this material.

Sincerely,

David Horn
Gopher Women's Hockey Asst. Coach
