I applaud you ladies for leaving that store!
I think I would have stayed and given that guy a rather belligerent piece of
my mind and then left. They probaboly have a store team and all of them suck
and that's why they're upset - there are actually women who are able to play
better than they can!

Lisa, I agree with you 100%.
I know many female FANS of hockey, not the cutest players contest. They
know how the game is played, and what their favorite players do to keep
it going, just like us male fans do. Don't be afraid to call somebody
on this.

I dealt with the physical therapists (this was actually six years ago, when I
was rehabbing a bone bruise on the back of my right kneecap) by simply
telling them that Edmonton could not possibly win the Cup that year without
Messier, and that when he was out with a sore wrist their penalty killing
and power play had dropped like a stone and they weren't good enough to
overcome bad special teams play. I will never forget one of them literally
double taking and saying, "You really *do* know something about hockey, don't
you?"
All the while I'm sitting on this exercise bike, chugging away, wearing my
1990 Springfield Indians Calder Cup t-shirt, glancing at the morning paper's
NHL playoff coverage. If I'd been in a nasty mood I would have regaled them
with junior/college stats for Joe Day, Marc Bergevin, Kay Whitmore and Terry
Yake, but it was too early in the morning to be so cruel....:)

The Nichols girls play Canadian high school teams ( there are about fifteen
high schools in southern Ontario that have teams ) and some regional travel
teams, like the Syracuse Stars.

Then the jerk would have figured that it was that time of the month, and
all girls get like that. A large pile of $300 worth of equipment left
quietly on the counter is so much more expressive.

Hey, nothing speaks like the almighty dollar...or asking to see the manager
and telling him/her exactly *why* that $300 pile of equipment is lying on the
counter. And maybe mentioning that your teammates sent you there to check
the place out, and that the clerk's behavior cost the store several thousand
dollars in potential business.
As an aside, I bought a pair of hockey skates back a few years ago before I
hurt my knee and I went to a sporting goods store out on eastern Long Island.
The teenage sales clerks were very polite, didn't make snide remarks, and
sold me a comfortable pair of boys' size Bauers (all that fit in inexpensive
skates - I didn't want to spend $200 if it turned out I was a terrible
skater, which in fact turned out to be the case). The friends I was visiting
mentioned that the clerks were the twin sons of the owners.
And damned if it didn't turn out that I was waited on by Chris and Peter
Ferraro, later of the US Olympic team and the Binghamton Rangers. My big
brush with celebrity...and though they're absolutely obnoxious to opposing
teams when they play, they know better than to alienate a potential customer.
I still smile whenever I see those skates and think that they were sold to
me by two of the players I most love to boo!

I found a wonderful store in the Seattle area that is more than happy to
help out the female customers (it seems almost half of the equip they sell
is to women). Having found this wonderful store of course I am now moving
to BC : )
But (and I'm sorry if this has been talked about but I'm new to the list
and new to hockey) is there any place that sells equip especially made for
women? I'm having a problem finding shoulder pads to fit and stay in place
without taping them down...There must be a better way then tape!

We are fortunate. Our hockey shop (a very nice one...Hockey Haven in Salt Lake City) not only treats women well, it is owned by a woman and has an extremely knowledgeable woman (plays goalie) on staff. It is nice that not everyone has to face the ridiculous comments each time we shop.
