The new address for Tim Pacan and Dianne McIntyre's web site is
   http://webhome.idirect.com/~teepee/

They have lots of great pictures from the 1997 Women's World Hockey
Championship. Check it out if you get a chance. I think they'll be
adding more to the site shortly too.

Hi Jessica,

I will take you up on your generous offer. I live in Denver and I am
looking for a good adult camp for someone who is serious about learning,
but hasn't had much experience (I've only been skating for about a
year). Also, as a newly working adult, I can't take off for a week just
to play hockey, so if you know of any around here that I can go to over
the weekend or at night, that would be great. (Though I can't help
wondering where Laura Stamm's camp is?)

Thanks for any leads you can give!

Hi,

Does anyone know what sort of playing opportunities are there in this area for high-school age girls? Are there any high school teams? Thanks.

If you want info on Laura Stamm hockey camps you can write to:

Laura Stamm Enterprises, Inc.
205 Lincoln Place
Tuckahoe, NY 10707

or you can call: CLINICS> 1-800-750-3502
                            SCHOOLS & WORKSHOPS> 1-800-750-3496

The clinics are "Power skating clinics" to train players of all levels. The
schools are one-week summer power skating schools for players ages 8 to
adult. The workshops are intensive courses for elite players. I'm not sure
what they offer for women nowadays. This brochure is a couple of years old
and when I went, I was the only girl and about 5 years older than the other
campers. Although I did get a lot of compliments and some "I give you a lot
of credit" 's. It was flattering and made me want to excell all the more.
 Hope this helps some people.

It's tough just being a fan, let alone a player. I was pretty much hounded
off the Bruins topic on AOL and told to "go play with the other puckbunnies"
in this awful topic devoted to squealing over cute players. The fact that
I'm married, wear a size 14 petite, and am pushing forty doesn't matter -
according to the men who had established their little He-Man Woman Haters
Club, just being female meant that I couldn't possibly be a serious fan.

And a lot of the old boys in the hockey writers don't help - Stan Fischler
conducted this senseless vendetta against Manon Rheaume for something like
three years in The Hockey News. He also wrote this dreadful article a few
years ago in Hockey Digest, wherein he claimed to have polled three female
hockey writers in Los Angeles about their picks for the cutest player, best
buns, best eyes, best lips, etc. When Nancy Marrapese, the Bruins beat
writer for the Globe, wrote a letter telling Fischler that he wasn't helping
the cause of women fans, Fischler wrote this cutesy little "there, there,
calm down, it's all in good fun, and besides, most women go to the games to
look at the cute players, dear" reply.

It really ticks me off, that I have to reel off half a page of statistics to
the male trainers in physical therapy to be taken seriously. I know it's not
nearly as important as the feminization of poverty or what the Taliban did to
women in Afghanistan when they took over, but God, it drives me crazy.....

Peterborough is about 100 miles south of Ottawa in Ontario. It is east of
Toronto and west of Montreal. It is in the Kawarthas, a great area of
lakes. They are a little rocky, so watch where you drive your boat when
you water ski. I spent many pleasant summers there. It is absolutley
beautiful country, but not much to do in the winter.

I am 31 year old woman just starting to learn ice hockey....Just last week I
went into Paragon Sporting Goods in NYC to buy my first pair of ice hockey
skates. I was having what started out ot be a very pleasant conversation
with the sales clerk, up unitl the moment when I mentioned that I was going
to be playing ice hockey, not just using the skates for ice skating. I will
spare you the details of the conversation, but the gist of it was that he was
adamantly opposed to women playing ice hockey. He said it "ruins the game."
He also babbled something about it ruining the "tradition" of the game.

After telling him that he was a total idiot, I let the store manager know
about his "opinionated employee." I also walked out, leaving the skates and
all the other equipment I would have bought behind.

That is the last time I will go into that store.

I did, however, find 2 other shops that were very friendly, helpful, and
knowledgebale:

Cosby's (7th Ave. & 32nd St.) and the shop at Chelsea Piers (23rd st and
12th Ave.)

(What a combo!)

Fischler is and always has been a fathead. He doesn't write intelligent
comments about any aspect of the game, let alone when it involves women.

On the Nike skate subject, I talked to an NHLer about them today and he says
the only noticeable differences are more padding and the heel being a bit
higher (which a skating coach of mine says is good if you have a hard time
staying on the balls of your feet). The player wears his regularly, but
didn't seem particularly impressed. I don't know if he has a contract or
something.
