I can definitely attest to the sexism that is still out there against
women playing hockey. I went to look for shoulder pads this year, and
at one store, the clerk asked me if I was buying them for Halloween! I
promptly left the store after that unhelpful remark.

To get on a different subject, there was a bit of discussion about the
difference between men's and women's hockey. Well, for one thing, we
don't generally fight each other just because we are losing.

At my first game at NARch this weekend, the referee stopped our game
when we still had 11 and a half minutes left in the second period (there
are two 17 minute periods in these games). When I complained, he first
said that they were on a tight schedule. (The teams who were supposed
to play after us hadn't even shown up yet!!) Then the truth came out
that they thought we might get physical if we were losing too badly
(apparently, a lot of mens teams fight when they are losing). I can
tell you that none of my team was even close to the point of starting a
fight and we just wanted to play and have fun. I was really
disappointed because we were playing better as the game progressed.
Thankfully, after that game they went ahead and let all the women's
teams finish their games (regardless of the score) and sure enough,
there weren't any problems.

I bought the book about a year ago -- I have not read it cover to cover, but
it has a lot of good information and gives pretty detailed instructions on
drills both on and off the ice. I didn't pay that much for the book, but I
would have bought it no matter how much it cost.

Now ---- if I would just practice what I have read...............

Hi,

I saw this book advertised in Women's Hockey Magazine. Has anyone read
it? What did you think? Was it worth the money?

BTW, thanks to everyone who responded regarding women's hockey camps. I
did find one that will work with my schedule.

Thanks,
Laura

I own Laura Stamm's Power Skating book, and it's one I'd heartily recommend-
the only trouble is that every move and maneuver is described in exact
painstaking detail --which is ideal if you're learning, but can appear
overwhelming (when you discover there are 10 or more steps to doing something
like backwards crossovers) at first glance. It also has all sorts of great
drills for practicing your power skating, once you've gotten those first
10+ steps under your belt. Next to having a personal coach, I think it's
one of the best things you could buy, if you're motivated to read these sorts
of books.

**hello everyone! I'm nearly decompressed from finals/lab book grading, and
will soon be doing those things I promised!

Yes, I'll definitely be there. I think our women's league here in
Toronto will be sending three teams this year. There was some talk
about having different levels for the women's divisions at NARCh this
year (silver, gold, platinum, etc), but I'm not sure what they have
decided on. It should be a fun tournament!! See you there!

The Laura Stamm book is great, although very technical. I skated in her
program as a child, learning more in a period of days than I had in all
the years prior. Get the book, but by all means get in her program if
you can. She will change your game forever.

I also found Laura Stamm's book a little bit too complicated and wordy for
my liking. I prefer Audrey Bakewell's Book "Get the Edge". It was
recently published, has simple step by step progressions for many skills,
and excellent diagrams. I'd definitely recommend her book to anyone.
She's also got some great personal anecdotes from her days as power skating
instructor for the Edmonton Oilers, so it's also very interesting.

You can check out my brief synopsis of both books (along with several other
coaching books and womens hockey books) on my web site at
http://www.rgih.bc.ca/books.htm

Hope this helps.

I have a list of hundreds of camps in the United States and Canada. It
does have many good ones, including Laura Stamm. There are many I
wished to go to, but I am going to Bowling Green. I've gone to that
camp every year I have lived in the US, and love it. Probably 90% of
the camps listed only go up to 18, but there are some great adult ones.

I also found some good goalie camps. I think that Rick Heinz looks the
best, but that is my opinion without ever experiencing it.

If anyone wants to find out any specific camp or a good camp email me.
I have the emails of some camps too.

Hi, I thought I would type in and say, I am just coming back to
inline hockey after many years away from the sport. After reading the
various letters about sexism I was a little worried about finding helpful
advice.
Where I am in a small town there isn't many places to find
equipment, so I called to a store in Auckland New Zealand, I think it was
the Manukau Branch of Stirling Sports.
The young man that I talked to acted as if were just another
customer, he even spent time with me and helped me find a suitable pair of
boots, because I have had an ankle operation.
He answered every question, he didn't patrnise me or anything, I
must give my thanks to this gentleman as he was very particular about not
ripping me off yet showing me good quality gear.
So don't worry hockey ladies as I have found there are still helpful
assistants around.

If the only difference in the NIKE skates and the Bauer skates is looks, then
why pay the extra money? I know I won't. Most serious players don't need to
make a "trendy" fashion statement. (In other words, I can't afford them...
 Ha ha.)

Can anyone tell me the web page address for Tim Paecan's (teepee) WWC pics?
I know he sent a message to the list advertising the pics but I cannot
remember what I did with the address.

Thanks a bunch!
Ken

ps. I'm still looking for another Team USA Media Guide, from the WWC, if
anyone has an extra they'd like to part with!

In a message dated 97-05-21 08:23:39 EDT, you write:

<<
If you post the email or fax number of the store, I'd gladly write them
a nice letter pointing out the 40% national growth rate in women's
hockey (not including Minn) and that women make up 18% of the full time
hockey marketing (according to the National Sporting Goods Assoc.).
  >>

We should all write!

I will add that I bought my first non-skates equipment (gloves) at Paragon,
and the only problem I had was that the guy in the hockey department that day
cheerfully admitted he didn't know much about how they were supposed to fit.
And they didn't. But at least he didn't give me any grief.

Here's an idea:
Looking for Nike skates at Bauer prices? Well, buy the Bauer
skates, take $10 and send away for the Nike sneaker straps that they
make for a lot of boy's high top sneakers, and put them on their
skates. Some of my teammates did this...they bought them in purple to
match our uniforms. They looked pretty good, if that's the effect
you're trying to get. I still like my good ole Bauers, I don't care
about the swoosh.
