I seem to have the opposite problem from everyone else on this list. I live in
the Canadian Arctic (year round cold climate we do have!). My community has
only 1200 people and we had a regulation sized rink. Our ice time is dirt
cheap. I'm almost embarrassed to mention that it costs us ten dollars per
hour. We have great ice times, too. My problem as player/coach is that no
women want to play. Often I am the only one arriving to our "games"! Right
now, though we have a bigger problem. Our entire recreation complex burned to
the ground last year and we won't be getting a new one till 1998. Before any
of you come rushing up to rent our inexpensive ice, though, take a look at a
map. I live on the Arctic Ocean and we don't have a road to anywhere. I fly to
south to play with my team (Team Northwest Territories). It takes 2 hours and
about $500 to fly to Yellowknife. In the last seven years I have only played
tournaments, no regular season, because of this!

There are three clinics being offered in Laurel, MD, the week of 30
June. There is an elite camp for under 18, and regular camp for girls
and women of all ages (over 7 years old, that is), and an evening camp
for senior women.

Kari,
Ummm, why do you live there anyway?
just kidding. I guess we all have our own hassles. Maybe some more women
and girls will want to play after the olympics. Good luck

Does anyone know what "EB" and "DA" actually stand for? That's not an
easy combination of letters to remember.
Just curious...

Hi all,
I just wanted to let you know that as far as CCM skates go, they come in
two different widths, wide (EB) and narrow(DA) - in my experience, not
all skate shop employees know about this.

My name is Karen Lohr and I live in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. This past year
I played hockey for the first time on the first all girls midget team. Our
high school does not have a girls ice hockey team and I am interested in
hearing about other peoples high school teams. Also, if anyone has any
contacts to the Hudson High School girls ice hickey team, located in
Hudson, WI, I would greatly appriciate it. I am interested in learning how
you got a girls high school team going, how well the school/community
supports the team, how many other girls teams are in your area/state, and
how many games/distance to games you play. Right now, as far as I know,
the Hudson team is the only High School girls team in Wisconsin.
Thanks for your help.

This isn't true anymore. The old facilities are run by the
municipalities, but the new complexes springing up in Southern Ontario
are mostly privately run. That is the new trend. There is no more public
money.
You might be interested in knowing that tonight I attended our ice
allocation committee meeting and a lot of discussion was had regarding
the shortage of rinks here. The committee chair stated that the US is
now in the process of building 500 new rinks per year for the next
couple of years. I don't know which markets these facilities will be
built in, but it is putting a bit of a scare in the hearts of Canadian
hockey associations. Because we are at a standstill in new rink
development, there is a fear that Canadian children won't be developing
skills needed to compete at the elite levels. If the US is indeed
building so many new facilities, we will have a lot of competition to
develop players.
