My daughter started playing with CCM Tacks and has now moved
on to the Bauer 5000 composites. She's had them over a year
now and loves them. She is on the ice sometimes 6 days a week
(sometimes twice per day). I am on the ice maybe once per week
at most and have found the CCM 352s to be fine. My daughter
and I both have wide feet and were able to get both of these
brands in wide sizes. Some of the larger hockey supply stores
will carry wide or narrow in stock. We stopped by the
1-800-hockey1 store in South Windsor CT on one of her game
trips and bought our skates. They even measured where our
ankles were and used a clamping type of tool to break-in the
boot a bit. I was in the Washington D.C. area (Reston, VA I
believe) and saw someone getting custom fitted boots made. They
take a mold of your feet and create the boot from that. I imagine
those could be quite expensive.

Hello, Jill
Sorry it took me so long to reply to your e-mail but I have been
extremely busy with schoolwork.
I don't know of any teams in the *actual* NYC area. The teams you
mentioned, the LI Hurricanes and Brooklyn Blades are 2 that come to
mind. There is also Hickory Hill...I'm not sure of their home rink.
We did play them at a new rink in Westchester though. From playing
against them, here is my view on the three teams:
They are older teams, mostly made up of women in I guess their
20s and 30s, but I'm not sure on exact figures. I haven't played the
Blades since last season, but my impression of them and the
Hurricanes is that they are a team that relies chiefly on their size
and shooting to win games. The Hurricanes have slightly more talent,
with a few really speedy forwards. The Hickory Hill team is slightly
more talented with a few younger players, and are very classy. By
that I mean they play the game for what it's worth and aren't into
cheap stuff. Like I said, I know little about the Blades...I guess
you have to choose the team that is the most geographically
accessible to you. Good luck, perhaps we will play you sometime!

Julee,

My name is Karen Lohr and I live in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. It is near the
middle of the state, about 3 hours north-west of millwaukee. I play on the
midget girls team here. We went to the first ever midget girls state
tournament in March. The tournament was held in Waukasha, near Brookfield,
West Alles, and Millwaukee Wisconsin. There team is really great. The
only team that beat them was the Superior team. Waukasha has had a team
since around 1992. They used to play in the Hudson,MN tournament, I don't
know if they still do. If you want I might be able to get you a phone
number of the rink there. You can e-mail me back at email@hidden
      Hope this helps you,
	Karen Lohr

No new rinks are being built in NYC because real estate and building costs
are out of control, and there's no available land in Manhattan to build on.
Chelsea Piers, the only indoor facility, is built on a pier in the Hudson
River. That's how hard it is to find land! So we really have no hope of new
indoor rinks that are easily accessible and in a safe neighborhood.

Great concept, but there is so much that NYC needs -- better schools, public
parks, better transit, police, etc. -- that ice is a priority for a very VERY
small minority. Actually, I only know of about 40 women who play hockey in
NYC and they already play at the existing facility and an outdoor rink in
Brooklyn. Maybe we should all move to Ontario...

I just started playing in January and wasn't sure I'd stick with it, so I
spent about $70 on a pair of Bauer Rapids, and I couldn't be happier with
them! It took about 3-4 skates to break them in, and now they're like second
skins. And believe me, I've been hit HARD with sticks and slapshots during a
scrimmage, and my feet were fine. So you don't have to pay that much for
good skates, just find some that fit your feet well.

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a hockey camp that senior women can attend besides the
New Hampshire one? I have the brochure for that, but the timing is a
conflict for me. I was wondering if there was something maybe in
Minnesota which is also a lot closer to me since I'm in Chicago.

I have not found this to be true. I play very competitive hockey,
Midget II level, and we have 3 practices a week in addition to our
weekend games. I would also public skate another day a week. I have 2
year old Bauer Comps and 1 year old Bauer Comps and they are still in
great shape, except for a few toe scuffs, and of course, the blade
needs to be replaced. These skates made it through 2 straight weeks
of being on the ice 3 times a day at Dartmouth. They are a size 4 1/2.
So don't believe the myth about Jr. skates...maybe those people just
aren't taking care of them! Treat your equipment with care and it
will go a long way...

Don't be so quick to blame either the shape of your foot, the skate,
or the manufacturer. You mentioned that the skate was pre-owned. The
inside of skates are made of leather so they mold to your foot after
some wear. Since someone else owned these skates, they were most
likely molded to THEIR foot. You are receiving skates that were
already shaped to fit someone else, and once this has happened, it is
difficult to change the shape of it. I know many people with this
problem. Just go out and try on a few pairs of other skates...you'll
see how different they feel. The skates will hurt your feet at first,
but after a while will fit like a glove.

Yes, Nike now owns Canstar (Bauer, Cooper, etc), but the skates
don't seem to be the same. Take a look at www.gremic.com/nikeice.html.
They certainly aren't swooshed Comps.

I compared Nike Air Pursuits to Bauers (under $250). The boot,
rails and wheels were of much better quality for the price, $224 vs. $179.
I also thought they felt heavy at first. Try putting a Nike and a Bauer
(of the same size) in each hand. You can't tell the difference.

seen the gloves and sticks. They are not exactly the same as previous
Bauer or Cooper products. Actually the gloves are really nice, very
comfortable and flexible. Really short cuffs though. The sticks are
different too, the shaft is really rounded. Are they expensive? The
gloves were $119 ($99 for Juniors), I've seen models that cost more. The
graphite stick was about $80, about the same as the ever popular Easton
Ultralite. I think the aluminum model was around $50.

The guy at our pro shop was not overwhelmed except by the prices. He said
that a lot of the products were pretty much the same, only extra bucks for
the swoosh. On a personal note, I hate to see the Cooper name disappear so
that kids can buy into the latest fad. It is expensive enough to keep a
kid on the ice without having to deal with the overwhelming pre-teen desire
for an $80 graphite stick. On the other hand, there are other meaning to
"just say no!"
