It was common in Chicagoland for a while but it is starting to die out.
When I coached a "Midget" girls team in 1992, my high scorer was 8 years
old. Our team age ranged from 8 -- 16. Many of our opponents were senior
teams. As more girls joined, more teams were formed and the age spreads
became smaller. Our league (Women's Central District League) passed a rule
last year saying that you had to be 13 to play in the league. (However, one
girls pee wee team was "grandmothered" and allowed to have younger players.
(I think their youngest was 11.)

With regards to the Shooting Stars girls hockey team, I wrote that they had
played at the squirt, pee wee and bantam levels of NIHL (chicago's travel
league). Someone wrote back that they only had played squirt. I called
the former women's committee chairperson (and parent of an original
Shooting Star), an original Shooting Star, and an opposing organization's
coach to clarify the information. This is what I was told:
Sue Spector founded the Shooting Star program around 1985. These girls
played in the Skokie house league at the squirt level. Then they joined
the Northbrook Youth Hockey Association and began playing in NIHL. They
definitely played at the pee wee level. There is some confusion over
whether or not they played a year of bantam. But a former Chicago Hawks
boys bantam coach from the 1993-1994 seaon remembers a well fought game
ending in a 6-6 tie. Since this was the first time he had ever coached
against a girls' team he remembers it well.
While they were at Northbrook, a second girls team was added at the squirt
level. When the original group of girls left Northbrook to join Team
Illinois for the 1994-95 season, the squirts stayed with Northbrook. Since
the original group of girls left Northbrook, they have only had girls teams
compete at the squirt level. (And do very well!). But that does not negate
the years that the original group of girls played.

I know this is a womens hockey list, but Could you all do me a favor and
say some prayers for the three members of the Detroit Red Wings
orginization who were injured in that horrible accident last night?
Defensemen Vladdy Konstintinov is listed in critical condition and
remains unconsious. He is also on respirators to help him breath. Slava
Fetisov is in good condition at this time. He is alert and has been
talking to teammates. The Red Wings massage therapist who was also in
the limo is in critical condition. He underwent surgery last night. The
driver of the limo was driving without a valid drivers liscence. He is
listed in good condition. Your prayers would be greatly appreciated as
that is all we can do at this time. Thank you.
