Whoever wrote this - where and what kind of trail riding? Any race I've ever
been in or heard of has been classified by sex and age, not size. Even the
kids short races are by age - and there are some real size differences there.
I'd personally prefer that they not classify by sex, but then it seems that I
would be coming in about 200th out of 280 riders instead of in the top five
(women overall, not age class) and that really wouldn't be much fun. But,
mountain biking is an individual sport based solely on the strength and
stamina of an individual, so it's only a reality that men are stronger and
faster than the women.

I guess this is a sad way to spread some good news and some bad. I've
been quite busy as it seems Alaska's long days of summer are so few.
Anyway, the good news is this... The Alaska Firebirds won our lawsuit
against The Municipality of Anchorage. The bad news is that Rachel's
situation sounds so much like the one that caused us to seek legal help.
Rachel: We were able to get help from The National Women's Law Center.
( You may have noticed a posting on this list a while back regarding
some Title IX actions.) Although the legal firm that represented us did
their work pro bono, the NWLC paid all of the fees.
Since our lawsuit specifically addressed allocation and accessibility of
"Prime" ice hours, I would have to say that there is a precedent.
Contact the NWLC ASAP.
We wish you good luck. An unbelievable amount of stupidity went into
fighting our cause. The cost for which is, of course born, by the
taxpayer. At the outset, your loudest opponents will the women who
don't want their darling son's to lose one second of prime time.
Keep focused, and remember that the law doesn't often require you to
negotiate over discrimination. This allows you to move into to the
litigation process much quicker. I would guess that the best time to do
this is NOW!

It's also very similar to the whole flap over country clubs refusing to give
female members good tee times or access to the grill.
Most of all, though, this is a breach of contract. If you have something in
writing, or kept the correspondence from last year (or have enough witnesses
to the rink's behavior, in lieu of anything in writing), you can sue on those
grounds as well as sex discrimination, and may be somewhat easier to prove.
*Definitely* contact an attorney, preferably one used to dealing with sex
discrimination and/or contract law, and preferably one who's willing to do
the work pro bono. A suit will be expensive and time consuming...but if the
rink a) has a history of doing this, b) is publicly owned and c) the only
convenient one, you have to stop it now before it goes any further.
Also, check out their figure skating times. They may try to use that as a
defense ("We don't discriminate, we have plenty of time scheduled for the
little ladies who figure skate"). Figure skating and hockey are different,
of course, but the rink may try to argue that they *are* accommodating women
if they're the home rink for the local skating club.
Good luck!

I just pulled out my pads so that I could figure out what you were talking
about. It's true the pad does "wrap around" a bit. But, the velcro
extends completely to the edge of the pad which means that if you're
careful to make sure that velcro strap completely covers the velcro area
the slippage that you're talking about won't occur. You might want to
give it another try. I wore my pads in a game for the first time this
past weekend and really liked. If I find fault with them over time, I'll
let the list know. But, so far, I think they are a definite improvment
over boys/mens pads.

Rachel,
I understand your dilemma and I know it is very frustrating. I have been
involved in hockey for 25 years and I have and still do run into this
problem quite often. I don't know the entire situation at that rink but I
do know that at the rink I play at certain groups have precedence on ice
time. For example minor hockey because they are renting so much ice they
get first choice and then everyone else bids on the rest. I think you
will find this to be the case in most arena's. Between figure skating and
the recreational leagues there is not a lot of ice left to choose from. We
take what we can get and make the best of it, even though we do get some
bad hours.
I hope you can get your problem resolved without too much aggravation.
Best Regards
Mike

Nancy Theberge has written some papers on women's hockey. She's a
Kinesiology/Sociology professor at the University of Waterloo in
Ontario. You could try searching the periodicals in your library.
I know of a couple that she has:
1. Sociology of Sport Journal, 1995, 12, 389-402
"Gender, Sport, and the Construction of Community: A Case
Study From Women's Ice Hockey"
2. Canadian Woman Studies/Les Cahiers de la Femme, Volume 15, Number 4
"Playing with the Boys: Manon Rheaume, Women's Hockey and
the Struggle for Legitimacy"
I also have some references listed at:
