Subject: WARNING -- Plaidworks downtime this weekend
Message-ID:

Folks, sorry if you get multiple copies, but this is important.

The plaidworks.com systems will be down starting Saturday morning for a
period of time to allow us to reconfigure systems and make changes
necessary to our new server and new mail-list implementation projects,
and also to support some new (paying!) customers coming on-line soon.

Please expect that the systems will simply not be around all day
Saturday, July 19. The entire network will be turned off for periods of
time, and all of the machines will be up and down as we work on the
upgrade. We will be turning the mail lists off first thing in the
morning, and they will stay off until we're sure everything is put back
together properly, so expect NO MAIL from us, even is San Jose signs a
real goaltender (not likely).

There are going to be significant changes made to the systems here at
Plaidworks while this is going on. When the lists come back up, some of
the mail headers will probably be different (if you're doing mail
filtering, expect this to break your filters), but all of the mailing
addresses and instructions will stay the same.

We will send out mail to the lists letting you know when things are
back to normal, and warning you about the changes to expect (especially
if something crops up we didn't plan on...). Please be patient.

For the technically-curious, this weekend we'll be renaming our
servers, so that our new machine, currently mail2.plaidworks.com, will
become the new plaidworks.com machine. The current plaidworks.com
machine will be given a new name and continue to process the list, but
mail will be forwarded to it from the main server -- no need to change
your aliases or addresses. This will allow us to bring the new server
up on the new machine, and move lists over one at a time, so that when
we're done, we can simply turn the old machine off.

We've been doing a huge amount of infrastructure work getting ready for
this, and this is the last key upheaval before the new list system can
go into production. We're using this time to also update the web
servers to MacOS-8 and the new Webstar server, do some other
outstanding maintenance, and re-arrange some of the internal cabling,
because I'm tired of tripping on ethernet wires and stumbling on random
computers stuck everwhere...

I'm hoping to limit the outage to 4 or less hours, but plan on taking
Saturday off.

The new server stuff is *finally* about to come on-line. It's taken
forever, it seems, but it'll be worth it. We apologize for the
inconvenience the outages will cause, but it's better to get all of
this done at once than take a bunch of small outages and have them
baloon into large ones by accident....

Here's hoping this is painless (if not for you AND me, at least for you...)

Chuq
Plaidworks Consulting.

Message-ID:

The Vancouver Hockey Superseries Tournament was held in Delta, British
Columbia July 7-12, 1997.

The Superseries tournament invites "select" teams from different regions of
Canada, United States, and the rest of the world (there was a Minor Peewee
Team from Russia this year) and provides a "high performance" atmosphere
that allows "athletes to assess and evaluate their own situation in
comparison to that of their peers".

The Superseries tournament is quite reknowned in Minor Hockey circles, with
over 300 players having participated in the tournament going on to be
drafted in the NHL, including such prominent players as Paul Kariya, and
Joe Sakic. With the growing popularity of womens hockey, the tournament
recently added a womens division.

Having the opportunity to coach with the Pacific Northwest Wildcats in the
tournament, I thought that the tournament was one of the best womens
tournaments I've ever participated in. Of course, I haven't gone to any of
those big tournaments back east, but I thought the tournament was well
organized and definitely a worthwhile experience for the girls, and I would
definitely recommend attending this tournament.

The only major thing I had a problem with was the inconsistent and at times
Dombrowski-like reffing that plagued the tournament throughout, but with
the lack of female hockey referees in B.C., I guess that was not entirely
unexpected.

There were only 7 teams entered into the tournament this year.. so, if
you're interested in putting a team together next summer, it'd definitely
be great to see some more teams from the States, Ontario, and the East
Coast. You can call the Superseries Office at 1-800-567-0700 for more
information.

Anyways.. here are some stats from the tournament. Any questions, feel
free to e-mail me.

Dear Heidi,
I started playing 3 years ago when I was 41. My husband has played since
he was six but hadn't played in years. We started out doing clinics at
the Miami Ice Arena and found we really had a ball. That first year there
were three women but by the end there was only me. I have played in the
men's "C" league since then (but participate once a year in the Sun Cup
with women from around South Florida).
My husband, though a B player plays in the C league so we can play together
- a package deal I guess. I dress with the guys (I always wear a sport bra
and shorts) because I find it important to be part of the locker room
interaction. As others have said it's imperative to be a Team player, no
special requests or treatment expected. Sure there have been a few jerks
(eg. "I'd never let my wife play!", refused to be in the same locker room,
etc.) but on the whole the guys are really supportive once they see that I
play as hard as they do. I am constantly learning from everyone. I take
praise and criticism equally in stride.
There is definitely a gender difference on the bench but if you play your
position, do your best, you'll have a great time.
My biggest regret is that I did not have the opportunity to play as a child
so now I'm trying to catch up before the old bones give out. Hockey is
such a great sport!

Keep your head up,
June

Hi everyone -

I totally agree with those who said to just think of yourself as a
small hockey player, not as a "girl." You're part of the team, and if
you act that way, sooner or later people will treat you that way.
But I have to say this, and I know it sounds really girly and I'm
hitting myself in the head for actually writing this message, but the
biggest difference I notice between playing with women and playing with
men (the men I play with aren't all that good, so it's not speed) is the
smell! Men are so smelly! They sweat buckets and most women just
don't, or if they do they don't reek the way men do. It's quite
overpowering sometimes.
Just had to get that out. Good luck!

I've just got to get this off my chest: for over a year now i've hated
the Easton hockey ad that features Mike Modano and his puckbunnies. Now
that I might possibly be starting to play hockey this year, I've sworn
not to buy Easton equipment. It may be minor, but I find it offensive,
after all the effort women fans must endure to prove to men that we are
real fans, and not looking to score a hockey player, this ad does
nothing but portray women as player-chasing puckbunnies who nothing
about hockey expect for who has the best butt.

The answer is that men would rather throw their equipment in the bag and
store it until next week, whereas women go home and take care of their
gear. The men smell that bad before they even start to sweat!

If you really want to fit in on a men's team, go out and practice a few
times, get nice and sweaty, throw your gear in the bag, leave it in the
trunk of your car for a week and a half, then when you're changing in the
dressing room the men will know you're really a part of the team. Like a
pack of dogs, you know :) :) :)

Insurance smileys :) :)

Ahh, Interesting. Can't begrudge your opinion as I don't blame you.
But it will be interesting to see how equipment manufacturers react to
the expected expansion of the female player base after the Olympics.
Wonder if they'll do something similar.

Ahh come on. You mean that funk in the locker room was not the hockey
gear of girls I'd been coaching? Even after admonishing the players as
well as the parents to keep the gear clean, there was entirely too
little Stink-Eze. It was a constant chore to get them to keep even
thier socks and sweaters clean! And when we went on the road for ten
days... !!!

I have been informed that if you wash the stuff you remove the magic. Who
said only goalies were superstitious?

In defense of the girls -- My daughter went to a girl's clinic this week,
and I almost retched when I entered the locker room. See, girls can do
anything boys can.
