Jackie,
The other place to look is among the figure skaters. They don't know much
about hockey, but they can really skate and have an ice ethic - early
mornings, the crazy hours. Our girls team is about half figure skaters who
were getting to the point where they were tired of the sport, wanting a
team vs. solo experience etc. They were all about 13 when the hockey bug
hit them. They actually requested a girl's team and we used them as the
nucleus. We now have about 18 kids.

I agree with Chuck. Younger girls really benefit from staying in a boys
league. First of all, you won't find enough young girls to offer any
variety or competition, and second, until they hit puberty with growth
spurts that separate them by size, the boys and girls are pretty much the
same.

Debbie

I played for Team Nike (Portland, OR) this summer. I spoke with the team
manager a couple of months ago and she didn't say anything about Manon.
Nike has both women's and men's teams and they are not professional. In
fact, we had to pay our share of tournament fees and all of our travel and
hotel expenses. The only thing we got from Nike was wheels (no t-shirts,
no ball caps - nothing). Wheels are good, and it was a lot of fun, but I
don't think Team Nike is the caliber of play that Manon would be involved
in unless things have drastically changed in the last two months.

Regarding the petition that Carolyn has been developing from this list.
There are a number of avenues that you could take to turn some heads and
perhaps get some major public relations out of this. Realistically, if a
media channel has not already prepared to televise an event (such as the
women's hockey championships in March) prior to, at the very least two
months in advance, the chances of any major network covering the event
because of a petition are slim. Also, not to sound negative, 516 names on
a petition is not a large amount when you take into consideration that the
names are more than likely from all over North America. This would mean
that even if the network took the petiton seriously, it would be unlikely
that they would be in a posssiton to televise the event on a national basis
in order to reach all those on the petition's list. Here in Canada we are
fortunate that we do have the support of our major networks when it comes
to hockey (even women's hockey is increasingly getting more coverage,
albeit, a long way from being acceptable). However, to get to the point.

If you really want ot make a difference, look not to the present but to the
future! Why not start preparing to have some of the major women's hockey
events televised next year. I know everyone wants action now, but if a
realistic apporach is taken I am sure the long term results will be more
successful. In stating this, I have included the address of TSN in Canada.
I have also found out the e-mail address of someone at the network who said
he would be more than happy to recieve some e-mail from some people
interested in women's hockey. I cannot remember if I explained that he
might recieve a considerable amount or not. Oh well! I am sure that he
will not mind however. The point here is that if you start lobbying the
networks now , especially the ones that are covering the event, you might
just get a tremendous amount of support and publicity. Also, I have
included the address and contacts at ESPN and ESPN 2 and some of the other
major sports networks. If someone could call and get an e-mail adrress
than we could forward the lists to them directly.

Another good idea would be to forward a package to Don Cherry. He is very
involved with the tournament in Canada and a supporter of women's hockey
(hard to believe eh!), but I guarantee that if there is a controversial
matter that needs addressing to an american sports network, Don is the
person to bring it to light. You can reach Don Cherry by forwarding
letters or anything else to the TSN Sports Network addres listed below. Be
short and to the point. Do not demand anything, just state the facts and I
am sure that if anything, Don Cherry will make a comment about it sometime
durng his coverage of the women's world championships. This may all sound
completly ridiculous, but it works. And, once the papers in Toronto get
wind of this (Hint Hint), also included at the bottom of the list, they
would be very proactive in making point of the poor network support of the
champinships in the USA and elsewhere for that matter.

Sorry that this e-mail was so long winded. I hope that I have been some
help and if the list wants to take a slight detour for the next week or so
(in addition to regular conversation) lets start discussing some of the
alternative routes that are available to get some publicity on this matter
and some publicity (positive ) regarding women's hockey. Petitions are an
effective method of change, but more effective is lobbying the right people
(with a petition).

Hope this helps,

The Reno Renegades are a men's team that plays in the West
Coast Hockey League (WCHL), which is a relatively new
league (2nd year of play). It includes the (Fairbanks)
Alaska Gold Kings, the Anchorage Aces, Bakersfield Fog,
San Diego Gulls, Kharborosk (Russia), and Fresno Falcons.
Manon has been playing with them since Nov 20, 1996.

Well, I'm not sure which roller hockey tournament you were talking
about, but Team Nike (it may or may not be the same team) will be
competing in the 1997 Winter Nationals roller hockey tournament
in California this weekend. I'm not sure if Manon will be competing.
This tournament was supposed to take place in the new Wayne Gretzky
centre, but since its construction was delayed, the tournament will
take place at the Coast to Coast arena in Huntington Beach, CA.

I'll be playing for the Toronto Tornado in this tournament (my groin
injury is finally starting to feel a lot better so I'm playing ice and
roller hockey again! It sure is nice to be back! :-)). It was -17
degrees celcius last night in Toronto, so we're really looking forward
to the trip to California tomorrow!!! :-)

Here's the info that I have for the tournament:

  1997 Winter Nationals
    Coast to Coach Arena
    Huntington Beach, CA

The following four teams will compete in the women's division
  at the 1997 Winter Nationals:
     Femme Fatale, California?
     San Diego Riptide
     Team Nike
     Toronto Tornado

  Sat Feb 29:
7:00 am Toronto Tornado -vs- Team Nike
10:00 am Toronto Tornado -vs- Femme Fatale
9:55 pm Toronto Tornado -vs- San Diego Riptide

  Sun Feb 30:
12:30 pm Gold Medal Game (1st -vs- 2nd in round robin)

I'll post the results when I return.
