Actually his name is Pascal Rheaume, and I saw on ESPN yesterday that
he got his first NHL goal Thursday night. ESPN then went on to tell
us that Manon and Pascal are the first brother/sister combo to ever
both play in the same major sport, and that Manon now plays with the
New Jersey Rockin' Rollers of the RHI. Well, at least they had the
league right! She's been with the Sacramento River Rats since early
last summer. Check out the website "http:\\www.riverratshockey.com"
for more information on Manny.

I read today that Manon Rheaume WAS signed to the NJ Rockin Rollers,
along with about five of the Louisiana IceGators. (ECHL)

Re: email@hidden (Jess Becker)"s comment about "varsity". My daughter
attends an elite private high school in CT that ONLY recruits even if the
recruits aren't academically sound. I don't care if she plays varsity in
college, although she may. I just want her to continue her interest in
hockey!
I'd rather they have smart kids who are good players.

This is not true! The first place that the University looks for
talent is their club team. They don't have the money or resources
available to go off and start recruiting for the first year. Since they
look at the club team first all the players have to do is prove that they
can make it in the league. The University may not have to go and get the
top players right away anyway. It all depends on the level of the other
teams in your league!
I totally support what Serene said. I have been working my ass
off trying to organize three club teams at St. Cloud State and I get
nothing back (other than being able to play). The guys get scholarships
and they don't have to worry about who's making sure the refs are there
and paid, who's scheduling practice and game ice, who's making travel and
hotel arrangements, etc.

I agree with you. But my point was that it is not the labels "club" or
"varsity" that make the difference, there are other factors involved. What
I was trying to say was, if you are already being treated the same way, it
doesn't matter what you are called (although that brings up a seperate
issue of respect). Every club team is run differently, and it is not
always true that the players "run a club, do all of the organizing" etc.
Also, there are varsity teams which have to do those things for themselves.
What I was trying to say was that the word "varsity" does not guarantee
anything.

I reply:

Jil, my daughter also attends a private school in Ct (the sane one as
yours),
and yes they do recruit: albeit only qualified student athletes. I can
point to at least three instances of girls applying and being turned away
for scholastic reasons. These girls were excellent hockey players but
did not meet the academic qualifications.

BTW, my daughter was "recruited", is taking honor courses, did not repeat
a year and just got back some decent Sat's. Your post has an overture of
"sour grapes" to it!!
