BU has its own rink, but it is still tough for us to get ice time. The
men's team and our team are the only BU teams that compete with other
schools. But, within the university, there are intramurals as well as a
Law school and a Med school team. There are also numerous groups that rent
ice time, ranging from high schools (Catholic Memorial, Brookline High), to
men's Div. 3 schools (Suffolk U.), to groups of people who rent the ice for
fun, to youth teams. Since ice time can be rented for so much $$. they try
to rent it as much as possible, and thus it is almost always in use, and
time is hard to come by, even for a team affiliated with the school.

Here's a message I just received that I thought would be of interest to

The Alberta AAA provincials went this weekend and the Edmonton Chimo's came
out ahead over the Calgary Oval team, 3-1 yesterday afternoon.
Only three teams entered the AAA Prov's this year, Chimo's, Oval and another
Calgary team.
I am told they were great games. The final was tough as Oval beat the
Chimo's Saturday night in round robin play.
The Alberta AA Provincials (winner goes on to Western Shield A division) are
scheduled Feb. 28 - Mar. 2 weekend in Calgary.
The Alberta A Provincials happen March 8 & 9 in Edmonton area. The winner
goes on to Western Shield B division)

Message-ID:
When we set up the Univ. of MI club team in 1995 we followed University Club
sport rules which allowed us to include students, staff, faculty,
spouses/significant others, alumni and a small percentage of community
residents. We had several players on that first team that were not students
in an attempt to have any team at all. Our intention was always that when the
students began to join, those of us who were older (or just outside UM) would
find other places to skate.
This year UM went with a student's only policy to comply with other schools
in the area that are part of the CCWHA. The feeling was that it was unfair
for some schools to have a mix of students/community members while other
schools were only allowed to roster from within their student body. A side
benefit to this is that the Ann Arbor Community now boasts 3 Sr. women's
teams and 4 girls teams. All of whom have players on them that once were (or
soon hope to be) members of the UM team.
As to continuing a club team, I would hope that UM would certainly continue a
Club program regardless of it's varsity status. Once a program goes varsity
you are embedded in a process of recruiting and promoting. This does not
always coincide with developing the basic skills of women interested in
beginning the sport. A Club team (or multiple teams based on
skills/interests) allows you to provide ice hockey to a variety of players -
not just those with varsity level skills and committments.

I know I'm going to sound like a complete newbie -- have patience with
me, I'm learning as I go.
Can someone take the time to send me an email privately explaining the
different hockey designations, i.e., midget, etc. and their ages or
direct to me to where I can find the info. Is it on the plaidworks web
site? I'm really confused.
Thanks in advance,
